GTPlanet, welcome to the month of October and Week 6. Teams that are 5-0 up to this point have the opportunity to punch in consideration for Bowl season. Anything from the New Orleans Bowl to the Toyota Gator Bowl can be had for teams who are 5-0 and win this weekend. Three weeks later, we'll see who the BCS Bowl Game players will be including the hunt for the National Championship. And if you haven't noticed already, this is where conference play becomes more crucial. I'm talking about conference games the rest of the way. Some teams started some conference play all the way in Week 1! Now, football's going to get much more serious as we start a new month. Had a bad September? Do better in October. Temperatures will cool off this month as more football-appropriate weather ensues. For college basketball fans, we move closer to all the Midnight Madness events as basketball season will get underway some time next month.

JOHN'S EXTRAS

--- WHAT IS FORMULA SAE? ---
Last week, I mentioned some teams having Formula SAE teams. I talked about this during my Saturday 1-A scores while paying tribute to the wonderful Petit Le Mans. Basically, Formula SAE is a program instituted by engineering colleges of major universities and colleges. The SAE is the Student Association of Engineers. It is also a program that's international as well. You have teams from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, England, France, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Australia... all over the world. It even applies to all kinds of schools. Some of the best in America with motorsports projects include North Carolina-Charlotte, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Minnesota State-Mankato, Rennsalaer Tech, Missouri-Rolla, and places like that. International groups consist of Adelaide, British Columbia, Calgary, Toronto, Kanazawa, Manchester (England), Birmingham (England), Monash, Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Tokyo, RMIT (Australia), University College of London, Wollongong, and Yeungnam. A number of 1-A teams have FSAE programs including dougiemeats' Illinois squad, FoolKiller's Kentucky program, UK's rivals at Louisville, and all sorts of other programs. There are even programs for some universities which don't really have athletics programs like Michigan-Dearborn.

FSAE events are mostly held on some race tracks and in SCCA-style Solo racing. Teams are graded on cost, reliability, performance, and criteria related to all of this. All vehicles are created by students. Groups even come up with sponsorship for the projects because let's face it. It's not easy funding one of these teams. An example of funding can be seen with the promotional video for Massachusetts Tech. Visit: { http://web.mit.edu/fsae/ } to see their taem site.

Here are some samples of Formula SAE teams according to popular units (let me know if they don't work):

Auburn - http://www.eng.auburn.edu/organizations/SAE/AUFSAE/
Illinois - http://mie.uiuc.edu/clubs/sae/General/index.html
Kentucky - http://www.engr.uky.edu/student.orgs/sae/
Louisville - http://www.louisville.edu/speed/rso/sae/fsae/
Virginia Tech - http://www.vtmotorsports.com/
Oakland (non-football) - http://personalwebs.oakland.edu/~ousae/

The SAE also sponsors Formula Baja, which is where you build a suitable off-road Baja buggy. My brother used to work on an FSAE car for the University of Houston. I was going to relaunch my "College Motorsports" thread with this year's results, but it's been SO over. Just for fun, I sort of think that every school should have some Radical SR3's and just establish some racing leagues! ^_^

--- CONGRATULATIONS TO MARIO WILLIAMS AND THE HOUSTON TEXANS ---
Here's an NFL focus. The #1 2006 NFL Draft pick Mario Williams (Defense, North Carolina State) of the Houston Texans picked up his first sack of his career against the Miami Dolphins. Reliant Stadium was rocking as Williams picked up two sacks on two different possessions. His official count is 1 1/2 sacks after making Miami's Daunte Culpepper take a seat. Houston would win the game 17-15 and go 1-3 on the year.

--- ASTROS DONE ---
The Houston Astros lost to Atlanta 3-1 as there will be no postseason for Houston. They made a comeback VERY late, just not winning. So I now don't care who wins the title as long as a Houston team doesn't advance. I'll likely be forced to hear about baseball playoffs. You Astros did good. Now we just have to hope the Texans of the NFL and Rockets of the NBA get some magic going here in Houston. St. Louis is going to the postseason with this Houston loss. Houston had to win and hope St. Louis lost two straight to force a playoff. All the 'Stros had to do was win since St. Louis was down 5-0 to somebody else after the game... but the Astros didn't win. They need some sluggers and big-name players to compliment the crew. Maybe even keep Preston Wilson instead of sending him to the Cardinals. Like all of a sudden, he catches fire in St. Louis while the Astros are stuck in neutral.

Well, can't win them all, I guess.

--- ---
Jeff Fisher (Titans Head Coach)
A Titans player literally stomped on a Cowboys player. The Halftime show of the Sunday Night Football on NBC had one guy say that a severe fine should be made. On the other hand, another commenter said that this is a punishable crime.

The Titans' Haynesworth literally stomped on the head of the Cowboy Center, Andre J. (#65) while he was down on the field with his helmet off. Haynesworth apologized and said he'll never do it again. He's not surprised that he could be suspended or heavily-fined. There was still no place for that stuff. It was worse than when Marcus Vick stomped on the leg of that Louisville guy (Elvis Dumervil, perhaps?)

Let's look at this week of action, people!

Do you think the FSAE guys at UK will let me drive? Or do I have to be in SAE to actually drive the car too? I'll even complete the Panoz Racing School and get my license if I have to.

I guarantee I can drive better than any of these guys.

*Off-topic*

Thanks for pointing out Formula SAE, John. Funny how I attend the school of engineering here yet I haven't heard of this. I was actually looking for a racing-type group on Quad Day, and I don't know how I overlooked these guys. BTW, here's an updated link:

http://www.mechse.uiuc.edu/clubs/sae/General/index.html

The other one just leads to the School of Mechanical Engineering. Anyways, I'll definitely consider joining this. I'm in Civil Engineering, but according to the website, it is open to all majors.

Thanks again

So the race for the ALDS and NLDS are underway. I don't care who wins since the Astros couldn't make the postseason. So I'll be force-fed the race for the World Series crown. To beat this wave, I must keep on keeping on with college football. I got to go to work for all of you. I'm here to serve for all my college football fans. That's an advantage to my daily coverage of college football rather than waiting until Saturday night into early Sunday morning. It means that I'll have to be more vigilant, but I'll work to get you scores, comments, and more. I HAVE to do a daily deal with college basketball because you can see a game almost every day when college basketball season runs full wick. But the hardwood people aren't ready yet. Let's head to the gridiron and talk some football!

WEEK 6 - TUESDAY SYNOPSIS
Last Tuesday, a certain Conference USA team played on the road in Orlando. Now they will have to go into Tulsa, OK for some gridiron action. This would be a Conference USA match between a C-USA veteran and a C-USA sophomore.

DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"Some Like it Gold" Southern Mississippi at Tulsa
Let's head into Oklahoma and meet Tulsa University. They have a game against the University of Southern Mississippi. The University of Southern Mississippi must have been saddened to see one of their proud alums lose playing Monday Night Football. That famous alum? That guy is the future NFL Hall of Famer, Brett Favre. It's okay. This just means that the Golden Eagles will look to see some of their young fowl fly into the NFL next April. They can be capable of great things then and now. Southern Mississippi was hit by the hurricanes of Katrina and Rita last year. They went in to take on Tulsa University. The sky blue and gold were ready to take on Southern Mississippi under beautifully clear skies. However, it was pretty hot to go with it. Is it hot because it can be hot in Tulsa? Or is it hot because the Golden Hurricane know how to bring the heat to all of their opposition? Yeah. Tulsa's packing heat in the form of their running backs and wide receivers. And so begins the chess match. The game ended in a big win as the Golden Hurricane won big and shined in 24 karats. One last thing- I never realized that Conference USA has three teams whose nickname has "golden" to them. (20-6; TULSA)

DIVISION 1-AA GAMES
(No Division 1-AA games were reported)

DIVISION 2 GAMES
(No Division 2 games were reported)

DIVISION 3 GAMES

JOHN'S EXTRAS

--- TEMPLE AND SAVANNAH STATE ---
I usually profile a variety of universities and colleges when I get a chance to read about them on Wikipedia and on the respective websites of the colleges and universities. You all may hate me for profiles this time, because I'm profiling two of the most horrible Division 1 football teams- Temple and Savannah State. Almost every other team reluctantly beats their asses any given Saturday. I remember Louisville smashing Temple 62-0 earlier this season. One time, Temple actually upset Virginia Tech on the road. That's right. TEMPLE beating VIRGINIA TECH at VIRGINIA TECH. Almost every game Temple plays is like Virginia vs. Chaminade. I'll give Temple something to cheer about, though- at least Temple isn't Savannah State. Savannah State University has not only a horrible football team, but also an abysmal men's basketball team. Savannah State lost this past weekend to Miles College- a Division 2 school. Here's how bad Savannah State is. They lose to teams in Division 1. They lose to teams in Division 2. They lose to teams not even part of the NCAA. That's normally true for football and basketball. So you tell me. You don't know what horrible means until you hear of Temple and Savannah State. Hell, even the 2006 Colorado Buffaloes can beat Savannah State or Temple... or both in one weekend. Allow me to profile these two schools so you can learn as much as you can about these schools.

-Temple Profile

Official Name: Temple University
Motto: "Perseverantia Vincil" (Perseverance Conquers)
Established: 1884
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Website: http://www.temple.edu ; Athletics: http://www.owlsports.com

Collegiate Conference: MAC in football; Atlantic-10 in basketball
Nickname/Mascot: Owls
Colors: Cherry and White
Football Field: Lincoln Financial Field
Seating Capacity: 68,532

DID YOU KNOW...
(1.) ...that Temple used to be a night school? I'm sure if you heard of the term "night owl," then you'll know where Temple would get the inspiration to call their team the Owls.

(2.) ...that Temple was one of the first institutions in America to sponsor extracurricular athletic activities for its students?

(3.) ...that football and basketball at Temple were established in the same year (1894)?

(4.) ...that Temple's football program has never been to a Bowl Game since 1979?

More games this week including the Red River Shootout (Texas vs. Oklahoma). More on that in future posts. Stay tuned!

Wednesday night football is on tap. I actually wanted to highlight on upcoming games this weekend since it's Wednesday. However, I have to go to work. When a game is on, I MUST report that regardless of whether you like the schools in question or not. The synopsis gives you a general overview of the day's games. The scores follow thereafter.

WEEK 6 - WEDNESDAY SYNOPSIS
Two Conference USA schools are ready to go at it. A former lame duck in C-USA and a former MAC school went at it in yet another Conference USA match. Last night's C-USA match proved interesting. This is the second-straight night of C-USA action.

DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"Herd-Hunters" Central Florida at Marshall
Conference USA seen one match take place last night between Southern Mississippi at Tulsa. Now we have another match in the C-USA. So if you're a fan of Conference USA (not too many I know of on GTPlanet), this match should be fun for you. UCF is looking to keep rising up while taking down teams like Marshall. Let's see if UCF did that. The University of Central Florida is a considerably good team, though there have been some down times with UCF football (who DOESN'T have their down times?). Karat by karat, the Golden Knights are looking to impale their swords into any and all competition. The Golden Knights operate from their king's castle in Orlando, FL. It's time to see how the UCF crew can do in West Virginia. Remember a city named Huntington, WV. Why should you remember that city? It's because that is where you can find Marshall University. In its time playing in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), it was about the only West Virginia school in the MAC. Marshall seen Matthew McC...y walking the sidelines and even cashing in a money field goal for fun. The Thundering Herd has their own Hollywood stars. Instead of stunt doubles and re-takes, there are downs and shoulder pads. Marshall will try to disrupt UCF as best as possible. Central Florida has about three certain logos I've seen. One features the regular UCF logo, another features a knight's helmet colored in gold, and maybe my favorite one features a prancing horse that has wings on its left like Pegasus. Marshall led early as it got a touchdown. That touchdown did not see an extra point connected. It's like I say- extra points and field goal kicks are NEVER automatic. They may seem automatic, but there are imperfections in the kicking game at times. UCF led 13-9 at the half. All of a sudden, offense ruled the air in Huntington. With 5:30 left in regulation, UCF led 20-19. After going for a 45-yard field goal late in the game, they had a Delay of Game. The kick would have counted if in time. Now it's a 50-yard field goal and UCF tried to ice the Marshall kicker. I'm saying to myself "damn. Can this guy have any more pressure to perform than in a situation like this?" He tried to kick the field goal, and it... was... GOOOOD!!! The Marshall kicker hit a money field goal that I thought he wouldn't hit. Now imagine if the game had rainy weather, an inconfident kicker, playing against the #1 team in the nation with one second left in the game. That was one hell of a kick Marshall made! Made it from 50 yards on the right hash marks. He was money with that kick. Nine seconds left now as UCF is faced with a 22-yard kick from the left hash mark. Marshall has two timeouts left. You bet that they used both timeouts. UCF hit the field goal, but they then got an Unsportsmanlike Conduct call as the UCF field goal kicker celebrated with his helmet off. Marshall had just about the play of the game, but UCF picked up a sneaky win in the end. Central Florida improves to 2-3 while Marshall declines to 1-4. (23-22; Central Florida)

JOHN'S EXTRAS
The extras segment is either based on football or completely unrelated to football. That's why I call them Extras.

--- MORE ON COMMERCIALS OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ---
I always say that it's a pretty good opportunity when watching college sports and get to see commercials from the universities and colleges represented. There are normally two types of commercials aired on TV for certain universities- either the university/college itsself has a commercial, or the conference the university(-ies)/college(s) are in are focused. The Marshall and UCF commercial shown off a brief view of what they are like. College sports is more of a multi-million (even multi-billion) dollar deal. I see college sports as a business even though we're looking at a world of sports in which high-dollar salaries and salary caps are nonexistant. Let me give you some perspective on college football and the NFL. You don't see any commercials of certain cities represented in commercials. So if you seen the Baltimore Ravens take on the Miami Dolphins, you're not going to see too many commercials saying something like "please visit beautiful Baltimore/Miami. You can enjoy ______ in many of our ______. You can also enjoy NFL action in this amazing city." But in the collegiate ranks, you'll see a number of colleges and universities show off their university or college to the nation with commercials. Again, I hark back to the Kentucky at Louisville game. It's obvious that most people know about Kentucky and Louisville since they are both very popular universities. So college sports is a bit of a business. The inclusion of these commercials helps in two departments- sports recruiting and enrollment of students. So every commercial with footage of the universities/colleges represented will give future students something to look into or learn more about. I don't go to any bigtime colleges or universities. I'm just simply a student in the Houston Community College system. I may transfer to the University of Houston-Downtown campus when I clear my Associate in Arts. I still like these commercials because I get to see what the colleges are like when sports are not in session. I sometimes learn more about a certain college or university by way of commercials. So be sure to take a look at the commercials to see what the university has to offer in terms of education.

--- SOMETIMES IMAGINE WHERE SANTA CLARA WOULD BE IF THEY STILL PLAYED FOOTBALL ---
Santa Clara University cancelled its football program back in 1993. I wonder how much of a program Santa Clara would be if they still played football. It seems like I sometimes imagine if Santa Clara would be the USoCal of 1-AA had they still been in the football ranks. The Santa Clara Broncos has a GREAT deal of football history. They had a very proud football program. Maybe the best Division 1-AA California team is the University of San Diego. The San Diego Toreros are a pretty good team. I'd love to see today's San Diego take on Santa Clara in football if Santa Clara returned to football. They would be rivals as both play in the West Coast Conference in basketball. San Diego is the ONLY Division 1 school in the WCC with a current football team. But I still imagine if Santa Clara could keep the pain going if their football program stayed intact. Maybe the one of the best California teams in non Division 1 action would be Occidental(?) College(?) in Los Angeles. I think Occidental is ranked in the Top 25 in Division 3 football. The Broncos would still be quite a force to be reckoned with. SCU has a beautiful basketball arena which features tall glass walls. Still, I often wonder if Santa Clara reinstated football much like Campbell and Old Dominion (and maybe North Carolina-Charlotte) will do in a few years.

--- TOMORROW... ---
#17 Florida State plays at North Carolina State
Florida State hopes to remain in a high position when meeting North Carolina State. The game AT Florida State was a surprise when Clemson shocked Florida State. Will there be more NCSU magic? Can their football team did what their men's basketball team did against Houston in 1983?

Also for you tomorrow, I have a special for you. There will be a game that's taking place that is actually fueling an idea for me to start a college football thread. You'll know the full details when it comes time.

You aren't the only person to notice that college sports is a business.

Congress wants the NCAA to explain how it can be so commercialized, make nearly half a billion dollars a year, and still justify remainig tax-exempt.
USA Today Article

I have to agree with this myself. The NCAA has rules against players making money in any, way, shape, or form from their athletic talents, yet the NCAA uses their images and talent to bring in big bucks. If anyone tries to challenge the system the NCAA just tells them they don't get to play anymore. The NCAA treats the players as employees of the association without pay. The NCAA also does nothing to help students or protect them against unethical coaching and administrative staff. When a rule gets broken by the staff the students get punished.

In the end, it works out as if the students are endentured servants of the NCAA and the NCAA rolls in the money.

Why is it that Pitt QB Tyler Palko has not even gotten a mention when it comes to Heisman lists? Palko leads the NCAA in QB rating, and has better numbers across the board than both Troy Smith and Brady Quinn, I don't expect him to win the Heisman, but with the numbers he's putting up and the way he's been playing, he at least deserves a mention.

Because the Heisman is a joke and is always surrounded by controversy.

That's just my guess.

Welcome to Thursday scores. Allow me to to give out a little news update:

- Illinois and Michigan State Fined
The University of Illinois and Michigan State University have both been fined 10 large for the scuffle after Illinois' upset win over Michigan State. Cooler heads didn't prevail in this one as Michigan State couldn't hold the lead for two straight games. More info here: { http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2613380 }.

Now let's get on with Thursday action.

WEEK 6 - THURSDAY SYNOPSIS
One team picked up a massive upset after Thursday night was over and done. A shaken-but-not-stirred Mountain West team hopes to keep positive momentum going after having lost in an upset last week. Division 1-AA saw some black college football action both in the SWAC and in an Ohio Valley Conference rivalry. A big shutout win have occured in Division 2

NOTE: As a result of my computer unexpectedly starting and restarting, I had to do a System Restore for the first time on my new computer. I'll make game reports shorter in an effort to try to get to the point after trying hard to get every score in without fail.

JOHN'S SPECIAL!
Maple Leafers, come get your footballin' fix!

* Windsor at Western Ontario (Canadian College Football)
College football is the great American game. Nothing unites America like an exciting game of catch-as-catch-can football. We love it in America. There's one small problem, though. There are other places that think they can provide exciting football besides in America. What place would that be? Canada. This was a special presentation by College Sports TV (CSTV). What this game is all about is Windsor playing against Western Ontario. I don't know about Canada and their sports (including hockey). So let me key you in on what the two schools call their teams. The Windsor boys are known as the Windsor Lancers. They are the away team. This game took place in London, Ontario, Canada. London, Ontario, Canada is home to the University of Western Ontario. Western Ontario are known as the Mustangs. So let's get this Maple Leaf matchup started! After one half, Western Ontario led 11-10 even though Windsor cashed in a quick field goal before the half. After the half, Western Ontario kept on keeping on. The University of Western Ontario had homecoming under wet and rainy conditions. Homecoming was VERY wonderful for the Mustangs. (28-18; WESTERN ONTARIO)

JOHN'S EXTRAS
UNH Wide Receiver, David Ball, is on pace to break some records that Jerry Rice set when he was in college. He's on pace to break the record for most 1-AA touchdowns, most 1-AA career receiving yards, and most games with at least 100 receiving yards. I'll keep a close eye on New Hampshire in 1-AA and be ready to report any broken records by the New Hampshire Wildcats. This look-in on New Hampshire has inspired me to learn more about the University of New Hampshire. So here is another profile for you to take a look at:

- New Hampshire Profile

Official Name: The University of New Hampshire
Motto: "Science, Arts, Industry"
Established: 1866
Location: Durham, New Hampshire
Website: http://www.unh.edu/ ; Athletics: http://www.unhwildcats.com/
School Colors: UNH Blue and White

Collegiate Conference: Atlantic 10 (football); America East (Basketball)
Nickname/Mascot: Wildcats; Wild E. Cat
Football Field: Cowell Stadium
Seating Capacity: 6,500

DID YOU KNOW...

(1.) ...that [the University of] New Hampshire is one of the top entrepreneurial campuses by Forbes.com? What about that UNH was the only New England institution to be in the Top 10 for honors of the Fulbright fellowships with five students getting grants? It was also one of the Top 20 universities in America courtesy of the U.S. News and World Report.

(2.) ...that while the main campus is in Durham, there is another UNH in Manchester, NH?

(3.) ...that New Hampshire cut baseball, softball, golf, and men's lacrosse in 1997?

(4.) ...that New Hampshire has had over four live wildcat mascots between 1927 and 1970? Their third wildcat was stolen (or cat-napped?) by Harvard in 1939. Their third wildcat was named "Butch III." It was found in a cage in someone's garage with this score written on top: "HARVARD 60, N.H. 0." More here:

(5.) ...that New Hampshire's other electable mascot names included Huskies, Eagles, and even Unicorns? Their men's hockey team was known as the "Durham Bulls" at times.

Speaking of Wisconsin, their first match is against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

--- FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ---
On ESPN2, here's the matchup that's forthcoming:

* Louisville has their toughest match of the year when they go on the road to meet... Middle Tennessee State. MTSU is thinking upset after a dismal season. Louisville wants to stay undefeated and rub their collective faces into that university in Lexington.

--- SATURDAY MATCHES ---
* My GAME OF THE WEEK will be the rivalry game between Texas and Oklahoma. If there's ANY advantage between the two schools, it's Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma

* Michigan State has lost two straight. Throw away the records when the Spartans go to Ann Arbor to try to slap around undefeated Michigan. Will Michigan State lose three straight? It's the Battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy!

* In Division 3 last year, Mount Union College was upset by Ohio Northern. Now, the Purple Raiders will host the Ohio Northern Polar Bears for revenge. Mount Union is the defending Division 3 champion.

* Washington's looking MUCH better than in the past two seasons. But any chance they knock off Southern California in Los Angeles?

* CSTV show "Crystal Ball" had Tennessee going on the road and upsetting Georgia. Will Georgia stand tall against Tennessee and prevent the upset?

* On to the Big XII. The #23-ranked Missouri Tigers will look to stay unbeaten when they go to Lubbock and meet Texas Tech. Find out if they will remain unbeaten.

* South Carolina is a good football team. They have Steve Spurrier leading the Gamecocks. They are SO going to be a big factor in the SEC. Find out if Kentucky shuts them up and down in Lexington at Commonwealth Stadium.

* South Carolina is a good football team. They have Steve Spurrier leading the Gamecocks. They are SO going to be a big factor in the SEC. Find out if Kentucky shuts them up and down in Lexington at Commonwealth Stadium.
Overheard at the Coach Rich Brooks press conference:

Reporter: Coach, are you telling your players that Coach Spurrier hasn't lost in Commonwealth Stadium as a way to pump them up?

Coach Brooks: I don't see the point. Steve was coaching Florida before and last I checked Florida hasn't lost in Commonwealth Stadium since he left.

For everything I've said about Coach Brooks I can say he speaks honestly to the press and let's them know what he really thinks. I think I get a new funny quote from him on eth radio every week.

Although he does present a good point; Spurrier isn't invincible and the Gamecocks are not the Gators. The Gamecocks are a possible upset. It has been a few days but the last I heard it was predicted to be only a seven point game. That means that if we trick them once or they make one mistake more than expected we can win. The Wildcat fans have long waited to see the day Spurrier has to walk off this field with his head hung low. He's cocky and comes off as a jerk sometimes. Perhaps we will have a player run out of bounds at just the right point and BOOM! I think that would get a standing ovation.

It's Friday. The day before Saturday. A day where everything leads up to the big game. Your favorite college is playing. Your least favorite college is looking to be beaten. And its only one day until all the excitement Saturday football brings comes your way. Is it Saturday yet? Before you tackle (no pun intended) Saturday, you must go through Friday. Whether you're watching a family movie, the MLB playoffs, WWE Friday Night Smackdown!, or whatever.. it's time to go to work.

WEEK 6 - FRIDAY SYNOPSIS
In a game described as a tune-up for a Big East sophomore, they will play against a team that hasn't had a wonderful season as of right now. This match isn't one to overlook even though the underdog is playing at home and playing the underdog. Who knows if this game will end up as Chaminade vs. Virginia? There was also a Division 2 match to get people ready for Division 2 action.

DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"Middle of the Road" #8 Louisville vs. Middle Tennessee State (-where the Ten. Titans play-; Nashville, TN)
Kentucky will be ready to play at home against South Carolina tonight. But let's focus the boys in red from Louisvile. I got into football about four years ago. I had no idea that Louisville was a pure basketball school when I was seeing Louisville win a lot of games and go to Bowls. Now four years later, I respect Louisville for their hard-nosed football. You give them 60 minutes, they'll give you all you can handle and then some. Think of Louisville football like a buffet at a restaurant- teams will get all they can eat since Louisville brings it every game, every week. The Cardinals are a bunch of red birds looking to take on all opposition both on their level and below. Or as I call them, the Louisville Sluggers. If this was baseball, Louisville would be a Triple-A unit going up against a Single-A unit (like the Lexington Legends (cheap plug for the Houston Astros and FoolKiller)). Now it's Middle Tennessee State's turn. I always say that the Sun Belt to 1-A is like the Mid-Continent to Division 1 basketball- full of capable teams, but severely lacks depth vs. more powerful opposition. If I could make an analogy between MTSU and the non-football Mid-Continent, I'd say that MTSU would be either Valparaiso or (non-football) Chicago State. I forget the city where Middle Tennessee State University is, but I CERTAINLY know they are known as the Blue Raiders. The Blue Raiders were OWNED by Oklahoma weeks ago. They hope not to be owned by Louisville.

I can think of this game like it was basketball. Louisville should know basketball pretty well since their team won over two national titles (compared to Kentucky's seven). The Blue Raiders cashed in a coast-to-coast Touchdown to lead 6-3. The extra point made them improve to 7-3. Then, the Blue Raiders made the red birds feel blue as a clutch field goal. MTSU is 3-2 in beating Florida International, 1-AA Tennessee Tech, and North Texas (they're crap right now). So their only 1-A wins are against Sun Belt teams. Imagine a Big East win for Middle Tennessee State. That lead became a tie as Louisville tied up Middle Tennessee State at 10. A full moon was shining for sure. The tally at Halftime was 23-10 in favor of Louisville. They hit a 25-yard TD when it looked like MTSU would pick off Louisville. I think Mr. Petrino (I try not to confuse Bobby Petrino with Rick Pitino (men's hoops coach)) said something about Louisville not playing that well despite being up by 14. You can have two schools of thought on this one. The first one would be (1) not playing good even though you led by 14. The other would be (2) the ability to basically blow out any and every opposition. I'm sure you could say that its either inconfidence or arrogance. But they lead while MTSU wants it back (or at least a tie). As an example of a team not doing well to still win, I look back at the 2002 Houston Texans when they played in the snow against Pittsburgh. They had about 40-something yards of offense, yet still won 24-6 in Pittsburgh. So it's possible to stink and still smell like roses after the game. * A late pick by Middle Tennessee State meant that they get the ball back with 15 minutes left to devise a comeback. Louisville led 30-10 after three. MTSU never technically led the game as of yet. They NEVER caught up as Louisville was money in Nashville. (44-17; #8 Louisville)

^ an injury update... Louisville QB Brian Brohm has been throwing a few Nerf footballs. Funny as it may sound, keep in mind that this guy can't clutch a football and be ready to rifle it down the field since being banged up. If Michael Bush (Louisville, RB) went to the NFL Draft, he'd probably be somewhere between the 20th and 40th rounds. The games would have been complete blowouts if this tandem were still healthy. Louisville will get Brohm back soon, but M. Bush is still done for the season. The question here is if Louisville can keep pounding away in the Big East. Their biggest matchup will be at home against West Virginia (for some reason, I almost typed "Notre Dame"). But until then, enjoy this win, Cardinals.

DIVISION 2 GAMES

JOHN'S EXTRAS

--- BLADES OF STEEL ---
The Ice Breaker Tournament took place at the wonderful new arena at Miami University. It fielded two football schools and two not in football. The first game was between #14 Colgate and (non-football) Vermont. The night game was between (non-football and featured in "Former Glory") #9 Denver at #8 Miami University. The Vermont Catamounts were blowing out and embarassing the Colgate Raiders. A beat down happened when the home team of this tournament (Miami University) met Denver. The Denver Pioneers were trailing 5-2 around 8:30 left in the Third Period. This Miami University/Denver game got pretty physical in the Third Period. Almost like a little NHL action. Some of the players were even drafted to the NHL, yet still playing in college.

And for those of you keeping score, yes, the title of this story is based on the classic NES hockey game by Konami. Best feature of the game was that you could keep bumping into a player, duke it out on the ice, and if you get a little too agressive, the game goes to a cut scene where the two players throw their sticks down and fight it out. It was also one of the first games to have somewhat digitized voices (even for an NES) game

Other NCAA Hockey winners on opening day include Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and St. Lawrence.

ICE BREAKER TOURNAMENT RESULTS:
* #14 Colgate vs. Vermont (?-?; Vermont) *upset!*
* #9 Denver vs. #8 Miami University! (5-2; #8 MIAMI UNIVERSITY)

THIRD PLACE GAME: #14 Colgate vs. #9 Denver

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Vermont vs. #8 Miami University

--- ARE "PAY CHECK GAMES" GOOD FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL? ---
This was the Friday Night Debate for the Louisville/MTSU game. The stand was that they are bad for college football according to announcer Rod Gilmore. The ESPN fan vote stated that over 54% of fans voted that these such games are NOT good for college football. The other 46% voted that they are good for college football. But what do YOU think?

--- AND THE DEMAND FOR A PLAYOFF CONTINUES... ---
Tommy Tuberville (Auburn, Head Coach) wanted a playoff since Tuberville thinks the Tigers are deserving of a National Championship bid and wants a playoff. Lloyd Carr also wants a playoff. The call was for a 16-team playoff. But the format of getting it all to work is tough to call. I usually think of a 32-team playoff. Do things like follow Divisions 1-AA through 3. Give automatic berths to Conference Champions. Perhaps get winning teams to compete in the tournament. Have some bracketbusters. A playoff is possible, but I don't see how you'd implement it all. Since you have to fight off playoff races in the NFL. For some people, why be concerened with two different playoff runs in one sport? I made a very old thread as to how a playoff should be implemented. My concern is on how you can actually get teams together to play and make it work. Those are my problems. It's why I say that maybe 32 teams should compete for a National Championship instead of 16. Or let's do like NCAA basketball and have a play-in game so that teams with losing records or on the bubble can get into the playoffs for a chance at a National Championship. But it all starts with the BCS people as well as the NCAA.

--- TOMORROW... ---
I'm not going to be watching many games because my mom wants me to go to the barber in the morning (I'm not ready). I'm also going to go to the Houston Greek Festival. So I'm going to miss a lot of noon and afternoon games. And if I'm lucky, I may catch an evening or night game. So whatever game(s) you want to see, I hope you enjoy this weekend's action.

Opa! I came back from the Houston Greek Festival and ready to give some scores out. We have both coasts as well as dozens of other games out there. Come along. Get ride on the fantastic voyage of college football. I've seen a number of scores when I came home and began to type up this report. The same *.rtf file I use for my regular posts is what I use to take in all of my scores. I've already seen candidates for "most disappointing loss" and "upset of the week." Be sure to take a look at my synopsis of this week's games so you can get a general idea of what happened.

WEEK 6 - SATURDAY SYNOPSIS
The first full weekend of October seen a lot of teams play conference games or at least start conference play. An SEC game saw one shocking upset occur while a variety of big wins and saddening losses. One game ended with poor clock management and denial of an upset in California. Big games also came to form when Division 1-AA was about to see history being made. Division 2 saw a number of road teams win on the road. One big upset occured in the Division 2 ranks. A critical Division 3 match pitted a #1 team playing at home against a Top 10 opponent in Ohio. Teams that will play their sixth game in 1-A will have a chance at going to a Bowl Game by season's end, granted that they have been undefeated at this point.

DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"All's Fair in Love and Hate" Texas vs. Oklahoma (Cotton Bowl; Dallas, TX - RG: Red River Shootout)
How would you define hate? Think about what constitutes two people or parties to simply dislike each other. Imagine if one thing divides both of these two people or parties. Think about Texas and Oklahoma. They are two of the toughest teams in the Big XII, much less in the nation. Let's meet Oklahoma. Perhaps the most popular Oklahoma alum is WWE Raw announcer, Jim Ross. He'll proudly show his love of Oklahoma. The Sooners are ready to make that trip into Dallas to meet their Burnt Orange rivals. That Burnt Orange crew is the University of Texas. The U. of Texas can be found in the state capital of Austin. They are the defending champions in showing that the Big XII is NOT a sorry conference. They beat that team in Los Angeles that was entering dynasty status. The Longhorns know that no win is more important than kicking Oklahoma's asses. We head over to Dallas, Texas. Now you would think that Texas would have the upper hand since the game is played in the state of Texas rather than in Oklahoma. But that's not the case. You see, the Red River Shootout is like most soccer games and international friendlies. You have a lot of Burnt Orange to support Texas fans, and then you have Crimson to represent Oklahoma. So the game still remains critical to both teams. In the end, the win light went in Texas' favor. Texas pulls off another great performance even when I thought Adrian Peterson would be the X-Factor for the Sooners. Still only one loss for Texas. They're looking great right now. See if they can keep it up when they play their next game. (28-10; #7 Texas)

The next series of games will check in to the SEC. Come along for the ride.

"" #9 LSU at #5 Florida
The Florida Gators were going to just tidy up a bit and uh... beat down the LSU Tigers. Mission accomplished. ESPN College Gameday was in Florida as Kirk Herbstreit picked LSU to win. But Lee Corso put on the head of Albert (the Florida mascot), signaling Florida will win. He's a crazy, lovable sun of a gun. But L. Corso was right. (23-10; #5 FLORIDA)

"From Lexington with Love" South Carolina at Kentucky
Let's check in with the city of Lexington, home to the University of Kentucky. I asked last night if Kentucky could shut up and shut down South Carolina at home. Now let's see if they actually did. Let's meet South Carolina. South Carolina has to leave the Palmetto State for this one. Too good to be at home? No. Just to give Kentucky a message- "we're coming to get you!" Rather than state their claim via the wonderful folks from the United States Postal Service, they do it on the football field. The Gamecocks were probably sick of seeing Kentuckians(?) telling them that they are going down. While their men's basketball team are pushing to make the NCAA tournament after winning two straight NIT's, the football crew wants a Bowl Game. The team that will attempt to stop them is Kentucky. So let's meet Kentucky. The state of Kentucky is one of only four states that are Commonwealths. The flagship university of this state is ready to see its football team look for a big win and go a few more games over .500. You can find a beautiful fountain in Lexington next to a glass wall building saying "Lexington." One other camera view on ESPN2 shown a little girl playing in another fountain there. I never realized Lexington is a big city. I know Louisville is, but not Lexington. Anyhow, Kentucky has their own fountains. The blue crew are hoping to spring up like a fountain and drowning South Carolina in Wildcat blue. Late in the game, Kentucky picked up some huge momentum. Kentucky only trailed 17-10 with 4:53 left in the game. South Carolina had the ball on 3rd and 2 on Kentucky's 23-yard line. At least the 'Cats shown they can match up against South Carolina. Unfortunately, Kentucky got a taste of its own medicine when South Carolina pulled off some trick plays of their own as they took the air right out of Kentucky. The 6+1 made it 24-10. Kentucky may be done at this point. But put the fork down. We still have 4L42 left in the game. A miracle can save UK. After this Kentucky has LSU, Georgia, and Tennessee. So Kentucky still is pretty sure they are on the ropes getting pummeled by the other boxer. They had a chance to bring the game into Overtime, but Kentucky's Hail Mary prayer wasn't answered. And South Carolina won. I have a reason why Kentucky shouldn't be disappointed. The reason why is that they kept themselves in the game instead of being blown out or shut out by powehouse programs. If games were won on heart alone, Kentucky would be money against South Carolina. But unfortunately, games aren't won that way. I'd say it's a heartbreaker considering that Kentucky had plenty of chances to cash in on South Carolina's mistakes. (24-17; South Carolina)

"Winning Malfunction" Arkansas at #2 Auburn
My goodness gracious! I was listening to this game on the radio. My pocket radio has TV tuner features, so I was able to listen to the Arkansas/Auburn game. From what I was hearing, it was pretty damn ugly. But before I tell you what happened, let's meet the two teams. This game is brought to you by two schools that start with "A." Fayetteville, AR is where you can find The University of Arkansas. Arkansas has a pretty good basketball squad (with an ugly logo from what I've seen). The football team is marginal at best. But they want to pick up a hellacious win. The Razorbacks want to shut up Auburn. The Auburn head coach is Tommy Tuberville. He was the first coach to petition for a playoff in college football because he has faith in his team winning games and not getting as much love. An Auburn win here will give the Tigers plenty of recognition. Or like in college basketball, you have to have some significant wins and simply do a smashing job all year. You can't lose to inferior (depends on the level of the certain team) teams in basketball. Same would go for football. Jordan-Hare Stadium is where Auburn plays. There are about 60K-80K fans that pack the house for football. What is it like when all of them are silenced and leave the game early? Just ask Auburn. Auburn's going to fall very far from the tree now that Arkansas screwed up Auburn's win-loss record. (27-10; Arkansas) *upset!*

"Time to Get Rowdy" #13 Tennessee at #10 Georgia
Two schools with rowdy fans will engage in Athens, GA. We got Tennssee up against Georgia. Both schools have great women's basketball teams with Tennessee's girls getting the recognition compared to Georgia. Tennessee is ranked #13. At least their progress here has been better than last year when they failed to make a Bowl Game for the first time since the late 1980s. The Volunteers won't have 100K fans supporting them at Neyland Stadium. Instead, they'll get a tongue lashing from rowdy Georgia fans. The Petit Le Mans took place last week in Georgia. That was the big one for the state of Georgia. Football still remains strong in Georgia no matter what events take place. The Georgia Bulldogs are trying to keep up the same fire like their National Championship team of 1980(?) did. Most of the current Georgia players probably weren't even born when Georgia won the National Championship that year. It is said that the University of Georgia's arch is that freshmemn who walk underneath this specific arch will not graduate. So word to all current and future freshmen at the University of Georgia- DON'T WALK UNDER THAT ARCH!!! With 12:34 left in the game, Georgia answered a Tennessee fumble for a touchdown with a BEAUTIFUL 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The KR went from Asheville, NC all the way to Portland, OR. It was a lovely coast-to-coast TD. Unfortunately, the two-point conversion kept the score at 38-33 in favor of Tennessee. (51-33; #13 Tennessee) *upset!*

* Vanderbilt at Mississippi
This game in Oxford, MS seen the Ole Miss Rebels take down the Vanderbilt Commodores from Nashville. Vandy is now 0-2 in the SEC. (-; MISSISSIPPI)

Now on to other games.

"The Chopping Block" Michigan State at #6 Michigan (RIVALRY: Battle for Paul Bunyan)
Football in the state of Michigan is exceptional. The Big Ten rules in just about every sport the Big Ten sanctions. Big Ten football- nothing like it. (-; #6 MICHIGAN)

"Sixth Time a Charm?" Baylor at Colorado
Folsom Field is such a beautiful place to play football. Sad thing their football team has been ugly as sin. Winless overall. Even Baylor would whip Montana State's asses if Colorado didn't schedule them. Colorado went from a Big XII North champion to a damned disappointment. Whomever picked Colorado to win the Big XII North for another straight season must really feel like crap. If the Buffaloes can't beat lowly Baylor, they will be the biggest disappointment since Duke. Colorado would normally win games. But enough about Colorado. Let's talk about the lowly Baylor University. Baylor can be found in Waco, TX. They've been whacko against teams. They still stink, but the Bears have done a much better job at this point than Colorado all year. And in the end, Colorado lost again. I bet Colorado would lose to Savannah State or Temple if they keep this up. If Colorado was an NFL team, they'd get first pick in the NFL Draft because they are HORRIBLE right now. (-, 3OT; Baylor)

"Speak of the Blue Devil..." Duke at Alabama
Duke stinks. The Blue Devils stink more as they lost at the Alabama Crimson Tide. Somebody needs to be fired for Duke's football efforts. They need help. That's even if Urban Meyer has to get called up for the Duke job. (-; ALABAMA)

* Purdue at #1? Iowa
Unaffected by the big loss against Ohio State, the Iowa Hawkeyes kept on keeping on to smash the Purdue Boilermakers. (47-17; IOWA)

* #23 Missouri at Texas Tech
The Missouri Tigers won in enemy territory by beating the Texas Tech Red Raiders. (38-21; #23 Missouri)

* Penn State at Mnnesota (RIVALRY: Battle for the Land-Gant Trophy(?))
These two unranked schools went at it in one of the nation's youngest rivalries. They've been playing since 1993. The Nittany Lions of Penn State took down the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Overtime. (28-27, OT; Pennsylvania State)

* Northwestern at Wisconsin
Wisconsin's hockey team had a successful first game, and the Badger love continues as the football boys beat up and feasted on the Northwestern Wildcats. (41-9; WISCONSIN)

"Hell Freezing Over" Louisiana-Lafayette at Houston
This is not good. The Houston Cougars have now lost two straight as the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns shocked Houston. What would have been an easy win and a chance for Kevin Kolb to elevate his Heisman campaign has been denied of any hope of continuing. Something's wrong in Cougar land, and they need to fix it before it gets much worse. (31-28; Louisiana-Lafayette) *big win nominee*

--- RAPID FIRE ---
* Ball State at Buffalo (55-25; Ball State)
* Rice at Tulane (38-24; TULANE)
* Akron at Cincinnatti (20-14; CINCINNATTI)
* New Mexico State at Idaho (28-20; IDAHO)
* Central Michigan at Toledo (42-20; Central Michigan)
* Connecticut at South Florida (38-16; SOUTH FLORIDA)
* Virginia at East Carolina (31-21; EAST CAROLINA)
* Washington State at Oregon State (13-6; Washington State)
* Stanford at #12 Notre Dame (31-10; #12 NOTRE DAME)
* #?? West Virginia at Mississippi State (42-14; West Virginia)
* #22 Nebraska at Iowa State (28-14; #22 Nebraska)
* VMI at Army (62-7; ARMY) *ownage nominee*
* #11 Oregon at #16 California (45-21; #16 CALIFORNIA) *upset!*
* Louisiana Tech at Boise State (55-14; BOISE STATE)
* Indiana at Illinois (34-32; Indiana)

DIVISION 1-AA GAMES
GTPlanet, I am proud to report that history has been made in 1-AA football. We begin with the team looking to chase history playing at home against Richmond.

"A New Power" Richmond at New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Wildcats made history in this game as David Ball of UNH set the all-time record for most 1-AA touchdown receptions in surpassing Jerry Rice. In doing this, they crushed the Richmond Spiders by 10. (27-17; NEW HAMPSHIRE

From me to you, David Ball- Congratulations. You're one hell of a talent. You would make a GREAT pick in the NFL Draft if you keep up the good work. Sweet justice.

Let's go to other games now.

* Saint Francis at Central Connecticut State
Turn your head. This was ugly. The Central Connecticut State Blue Devils beat the holy hell out of the St. Francis Red Flash. Finally some Blue Devils that can play football unlike their 1-A Blue Devil counterparts. (61-2?; CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE)

* North Dakota State at Georgia Southern
I didn't know this until I Seen the ESPNEWS score. Georgia Southern is a great football team in 1-AA. The Eagles now have fallen to 2-3. Now for another surprise- the North Dakota State Bison are 5-0! Can you believe it? (34-14; North Dakota State)

* Morehead State at Dayton
Kentucky school, Morehead State went on the road to play against Dayton. The Dayton Flyers were shot out of the skies as the Morehead State Eagles preservered. (22-15; Morehead State)

--- ILLINOIS PACK ---
* Southeast Missouri State at Eastern Illinois
(21-0; EASTERN ILLINOIS)

* Western Illinois at Southern Illinois
(31-24; SOUTHERN ILLINOIS)

* California-Davis at Cal Poly (23-17; CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNICAL)
* Brown at Holy Cross (35-30; HOLY CROSS)

DIVISION 3 GAMES
* #10 Ohio Northern at #1 Mount Union

* Wisconsin-Stevens Point at #2 Wisconsin-Whitewater (31-13; #2 WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER)

JOHN'S SPECIAL!
* Mission Viejo (Calif.) at De La Salle (Calif.) --- High School Football ---
This is a High School football game with perhaps the most legendary high school football program in America. De La Salle once won over 150-something straight games. It means that they were very invincible for a long time. The De La Salle Spartans at #1 ranked in the nation. This California school took on another California high school- Mission Viejo. The Mission Viejo crew are looking to shock the Spartans. The De La Salle coach, Bob Ladouceur, has only 19 losses in 28 seasons at De La Salle. De La Salle IS high school football. De La Salle wins even though Mission Viejo picked up a consolation touchdown. (35-28; DE LA SALLE)

JOHN'S WINNERS AND LOSERS
BIGGEST WIN(S) OF THE WEEK:
David Ball (RB(?), New Hampshire) Makes 1-AA History for Most Touchdown Receptions as New Hampshire Wins
- I'm giving this one special consideration because David Ball surpassed future NFL Hall-of-Famer, Jerry Rice. J. Rice played for Mississippi Valley State in his college days

MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS(ES) OF THE WEEK
Washington Has Poor Clock Management to Fall to Southern California
- This isn't so much about Washington losing, but Washington losing with poor clock management. I hate the new clock rules. It didn't work. Other candidates I've considered:
* Georgia Falls Apart in Second Half to lose to Tennessee
* Oregon played nothing like a #11 team against #16 California

UPSET(S) OF THE WEEK (if any)
Arkansas Goes on the Road to Out-Class Auburn
- Arkansas came, saw, and conquered Auburn in an upset loss. The same head coach that wanted a playoff had to bear to watch his team go down in flames at home.

OWNAGE(S) OF THE WEEK
Army Turns VMI into Fertilizer 62-7
- Army beat Virginia Military Institute by a whopping margin. It was big enough for me to put on them as the winners of the "Ownage of the Week."

Virginia Military Institute = OWNED (by Army - 62-7)!

JOHN'S EXTRAS

--- THE HOUSTON GREEK FESTIVAL ---
The 40th Annual Houston Greek Festival is the city's biggest ethnic event lasting for over 40 years. How big is it? The British TV network, Sky TV(?) had someone talk about what were the biggest events held in October. One of the answers was the Houston Greek Festival. Showing that you don't need to go to Los Angeles or New York to enjoy a great city in great America. I had some pretty good food there. Just too bad that I can't remember or pronounce most of the names of the food. What was fun is that there were some very wonderful Greek dances including one performance by a wonderful young man that picked up small glasses of wine (I guess) with his teeth and drinking from them with his teeth. There was also a VERY funny skit all along featuring a Greek person named Niko (nee-koh, not nigh-koh). We had fun there with me and my family. Only person I came across that I know of was one of my community college's counselors. Too bad I didn't catch up to her. If you're in the Houston area, there's another day of the Greek Festival this Sunday. So check it out if you can. And come to Houston for next year's show if you missed this one. Houston really is a wonderful city if only

--- SINCE WHEN...? ---
GTPlanet, I've made a strange discovery. I was going to report the Division 2 scores when I came across Clark Atlanta University. I found this web site on George Mason football that's been around since 1993: { http://recsports.gmu.edu/football/ }. This website { http://www.gmufootball.org/ } features info that George Mason is basically a club-level team trying to break into the NCAA football ranks. George Mason has been champions of the Seaboard Conference (non-NCAA) about five times.

--- MONTERREY HISTORICS COVERAGE ON SPEED CHANNEL ---
Speed Channel aired their coverage of the Monterrey Historic Automobile Races. This 33rd Annual event saw something I've been wanting to see since the concept of the U.S. Grand Prix return- F1 cars at Laguna Seca. Ricardo Zonta of the Toyota F1 team tried to go for the all-time record at Laguna Seca. By getting better each lap, Zonta was able to smash the time and clock in a 1:06.309 as his fastest lap. He had a top speed or average speed of about 121.504 mph. Why don't these cars run at this track or even Road America? Someone HAD to bring it to Indy- a "roval" that no one except F1 and the Infiniti Pro Series race on. Bring it to a real race track. Maybe even do Miller Motorsports Park. MMP established itself as a challenging American race course in only its first year. Why not, player? Maybe even return to Sebring. When are we going to see today's F1 cars tackle Laguna Seca? When will we see other race cars compete at Indy's road course? I know Indianapolis is sacred ground, but why not some extra races at that course's road course?

--- FINAL JAPANESE GRAND PRIX AT SUZUKA ---
I like studying and learning about Japan. I still think that Suzuka is one hell of a race track. Suzuka has been a driver's favorite for a lot of Formula One race car drivers, not to mention my pick for Japan's toughest race track. The series is going to head to the uglied-up and f:censored:ed-up Fuji track. Suzuka is an awesome race track The best feature of this track is that there is so much track in such confined space. How can you not like this course? My only dislike about Suzuka is the Casio Triangle, which guarantees you going into 2nd or 1st gear going very slow. It's even worse with motorcycles. If it means that this is the very last Japanese GP at Suzuka, then you've brought some sensational memories in Formula One racing.

October's just as wacky as September! See you next week!

So you're an Oklahoma Sooner fan? How do you think the Sooners did against their hated Longhorn counterparts?

First, Kentuckians is correct. Second, big? Only by Kentucky standards. It is the second largest city in the state. It is the largest city in the US that is not on a body of water. However, I do not consider a population of 260,000 a big city. This might be from growing up in Louisville where I had fancy restaurants, broadway plays, and all the other things that you associate with big cities. I just know that when living in Lexington during college it felt small. It caters to horse farmers and college kids, thus has no true reason to become extremely large. When I picture a big city I imagine a skyline full of towering buildings.

Perhaps it is that I grew being told that this was a small city:

Louisville.

So in comparison this really seems small:

Lexington, Rupp Arena on right.

I would give it small-medium city at best.

And if you are curious the two fountains are the fountain at Triangle Park (in front of the Lexington sign), which is across the street from the back side of Rupp Arena and the fountain in front of the court house (where kids always play).

I'm glad you can see Kentucky is doing good by staying in teh games right now. Everyone wants the football to look like basketball. The fact of the matter is it just doesn't happen that way. It never has and most likely never will. A winning season is a good season at Kentucky, we should be happy with that.

(27-10; Arkansas) *upset!*
What the?! I guess no one saw that coming, not even Auburn.

Thanks for clearing this up for me, FoolKiller. And you know what I'll admit? I'll admit that I've eased up on Kentucky because I've sort of grown to have respect for the Kentucky Wildcats in football. I've normally slammed Kentucky a lot. But as you can tell, I've been less biased on them since knowing you. There will still be bad teams. I'm just trying to be a little less biased if I can. It's something you have to realize when you're either broadcasting or announcing- you have to try to remain as unbiased as possible so that you don't really show favoritism. I'll try to be less biased on Illinois football if I can. I just want to be able to share a love of college football with all of you. I hope I've done that since I've covered college football on GTPlanet.

But back to Kentucky. They were basically blown out at home to South Carolina. This game could have gone either way because there wasn't too much scoring like the Tennessee @ Georgia game this past weekend. I honestly thought Kentucky was going to make a game out of it. Unfortunately, they just didn't connect down the stretch as South Carolina was just too strong. I also make reference that Kentucky basketball is better than Kentucky football by miles, but I still have respect for Kentucky because they aren't Temple or Savannah State, which winning against them is almost automatic. I even said that "if you think Kentucky football is bad, maybe you never met Mississippi State." In fact, both Mississippi SEC teams have stumbled as of late. I think Mississippi State's Egg Bowl rivals, Mississippi (Ole Miss), is a better team even if Eli Manning was still in college.

With the Auburn game, I was VERY surprised that Arkansas beat Auburn at Auburn. I don't care WHO you are, it isn't easy beating Auburn at home. Only SEC stadium with greater home field advantage is... well, there are two- Tennessee and Florida. It's not easy to play at those two places either. Arkansas' men's basketball team can beat Auburn's pathetic basketball team easily. But on the football field, this was... okay. I didn't know what to think about Auburn getting embarassed at home against Arkansas. I didn't see the latest polls (I don't really follow the polls much anyways), so I don't know where Auburn was ranked. Auburn is a great team. I don't see them losing anything more than one game. They may even run the table. The irony to all of this is that Tommy Tuberville wanted a playoff system since he thinks his team isn't getting any National Championship love. Would Auburn's loss to Arkansas count as reason to not make the postseason if there was a playoff done up like in basketball? Just some shocking stuff.

Nothing's automatic in football. Don't forget to check out my new week's thread. I'll do a little special for this Columbus Day there.

I wouldn't call seven points a blow out, but one or two mistakes less and Kentuckly could have kept the game closer, possibly even tied for OT.

My fear for Kentucky down the road is that our running back, Little, is injured and out for a month. That will hurt our offense and may cause us to lose our chance at the Liberty Bowl. Did I mention that Liberty Bowl officials were in Lexington last week and essentially said we have the bid if we win the games? Someone has faith in us.

All I wish for Kentucky is to be able to be competitive in the SEC, but it is hard to get the coaches or players when they know they have to compete against teams like Florida and Tennessee. Who wants to play where there is no championship hopes because you have to play some of the best teams out there?

I also think that being in the SEC causes us to be underrated. Yes, Kentucky loses a lot of games, but look who we have to play every year. I am sure the big football teams say the same about basketball when their records suffer after playing Kentucky twice every season (although Florida and Tennessee are looking intimidating now).
