My trusty old Mazda 👍 once again stars in a race. This time its at Infineon.
My old time favourite track, NOT!
Upon completion of two 24 hour races after each other it was time I tried my hand again at this short endurance. Previous tries resulted in tears . I was not yet prepared for the speed of the LMPs. Sarthe took care of that.
The wise lessons learnt at Nürburg and my healthy fear of Infineon made me brake early, very early, especially at bends 1 & 2.
Race.
PAL Line up 10 seemed ideal. It had the Nissan R390 in the front and my main competition, Mazda 787B in 5th.
The Mazda was outbraked in the first bend and we swapped some paint, but fortunately not a lot. Then by the end of lap 1 I caught up with #4 and outsmarting the #3 and #2 in the 2 difficult bends. I only had the 390 to contend with. My superior speed soon took care of that.
Fortunately for me the 390 maintained his second place well in to lap 4. 👍 👍 By that time I had gained 11 seconds on the competition. But soon after the 390 was relegated to 4th by the Jag and the Mazda 787B. It was not until lap 11 that the 787 managed to overtake the Jag in 2nd. By that time the Jags tires were shot and he was performing pirouettes on the track and decided to pit. My lead had increased to 18 seconds.
On lap 14 the 787 went for tires increasing my lead even further. Only the BMW stayed out for 1 more lap. And me, I came in on lap 17. I take on different set of tyres R2/R1 and fill up from 27 to 59 units.
Id already lapped the 390 but he unlapped himself whilst I pitted. It takes 4 laps to overtake the 390 and I put him a lap behind. On lap 28 the Bentley pits and hes swiftly lapped. 45 minutes in to the race and I need some fresh rubber. I trade my well worn tires for a new set of RSH all around on lap 32. The R2/R1 combo was not the best choice. The Bentley nearly manages to unlap himself but I manage to stay ahead by a small margin.
Lap 35 and its time for the Jag to be lapped too, hes pitting. 6 laps later and the 390 is lapped for the 2nd time.
Lap 46 and the BMW falls prey to me too. Only 1 more to lap; the Orange/Green 787B. New tires and fuel are needed at the end of lap 51. Im down to 1 unit, so the pit is a bit longer. 59 units are added when I signal the fuel crew to stop. Seven laps further on and again the 390 is lapped and the Jag and Bentley follow on lap 60.
99 minutes have passed and I get a fresh set + fuel. The Bentley and the Jag unlap themselves but I undo that on laps 71 and 72. Just as lap 77 starts I manage to lap the final car, the #2 Mazda, its a good lap as the 390 is overtaken too just as we are about to start lap 78.
Lap 79 and the BMW falls victim again but I mess up and he manages to pass me by again. Not for long though, a lap later hes mine. Two hours and 3 minutes have passed and both Mazdas come in for refreshments. About 14 minutes later on lap 96 the Jag and the 390 are lapped yet again whilst theyre pitting. The Bentley is dispatched with on lap 101.
The final stint, Im 2 hours 27 minutes in to the race and get my final set of RSHs and some fuel. The 390 is lapped again on 108 and I decide to let him catch up on my final lap.
