All,

Bought a new car today.

It's a 2001, which is the final year for the first-generation A4. It's a 190-horse 2.8-liter V6 coupled with the 5-speed automatic with Tiptronic, good for a 7.5sec 0-60, or thereabouts. Not as quick as my first car, but it makes up for it in other ways. All options. I got a good deal, and hopefully it'll serve me well until I graduate from college in three years, and perhaps one or two years beyond that. Only 44,000 miles, though it's had two prior owners.

I begged the woman at the DMV for a good number and received a choice between a regular plate number 079-OLN and this one, which is a 50th Anniversary of the Air Force plate. I chose this one. Admit it - it's way cool.

I've attempted to re-create the famous Carrera GT picture, only this time with a slightly less powerful German car:

Unfortunately, it's impossible to replicate the lack of focus and the overall darkness present in the Carrera GT shot.

What does everyone think of my car?!

That is a nice Audi. I bet it's comfortable as hell. I wouldn't mind have a comfortable car to offset the obnoxiously loud Honda I have, but I can't afford another.

But I'm more interested in your house. That's a nice joint. I just hope you don't have a pool in the backyard because the forest is dense.

What happened to the Tribute? I mean this is about a million times better but just wondering.

Nice car though and I do like the plate on it...I'll admit it. Do you plan to drive that back and forth to Atlanta every semester? That'll rack up the miles pretty quick.

Congrats though! At least you got something really nice.

Nice. I've always had a soft spot for the older A4s. Is it a quattro (is the V6 even available in FWD?)

Low mileage is nice - that thing only has 10k more on it than my car, and it's 2 years older. Looks like a good value. Enjoy it!

Nice car indeed! Have fun with the insurance and repair costs, but thats what owning a VW... I mean Audi, is all about!

Thanks all for the kind words!! :D 👍 I just went for a drive in it to spot some cars - it's really a great car. It's the first car my family's ever had with Xenon headlights - they're incredible! It handles fantastically, it is comfortable despite a firm ride, and the Tiptronic is so much fun - and I can shift it into 'D' when I'm on the phone or photographing cars (daan and Duke are going to love that one).

The original plan was that I'd be stuck with the 'bute and my father would get something new, such as a Lexus RX or a Toyota Highlander. In the end he couldn't make up his mind, though, and the A4 just fell into our lap. Not only was it a good price, but it's hugely safe ('01 was the first year for side curtain airbags) and having low miles was an extra bonus. So my father is keeping the Tribute a few more years for himself.

I've got no idea how it's going to be transported to Atlanta - I'd like to drive, but as you mention it'd really rack up the miles - however Denver to Atlanta is a $900 auto transport cost, so that's not ideal. Eventually it will have to be driven as I can't be spending $900 twice a year to get it to and from, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I'd love it without Quattro, since I spend winters in Georgia now but not only does it have Quattro, it's got the cold weather package, which involves heated seats and a ski pass-through in the middle of the back seat. That'll get used a lot in Georgia, where it snowed precisely zero times this winter!

The V6 did come without Quattro. 98% of Colorado A4s have Quattro, but only about 55% of Georgia ones do - I see them frequently down there. Originally it was a trip, but I've gotten used to it. Not having Quattro would've subtracted a lot from the purchase price, but I'll take it - who knows when it might be valuable.

Insurance is tough, but actually fifteen percent cheaper than the SUV I would've inherited. Insurance companies have some weird and probably completely reasonable hangup about insuring teenagers in SUVs.

I would have figured the Mazda to be cheaper, but that certainly is a surprise. I still pay an arm and a leg for the Jetta, and its part of the reason why I'm searching for an alternative again. I'm good at finding a nice car with which I can afford the payment, but its the insurance that kills me every time...

Oh well. Good luck with the Auto-Union!

Brilliant choice in vehicle. Take care of it, keep it stock, and it will be worth something someday. Audi does have the most comfortable saloon cars in my opinion. Great choice, she's really a beauty. 👍

Just kidding -- nice car. I've always liked that generation of A4. 👍

Thanks - I was going to make a Poverty joke but I completely forgot. Dammit!

Perfect Balance
Great car, are you planning anything for it, or just keep it like it is?

It'll stay stock - it'd be a miracle if I kept it more than four years, and during that time it'll have to reliably provide me transportation in college. I feel like modifications are just going to make it less reliable and decrease my resale value, and it's already quick enough - no sense dropping money into it when really I'm saving for the future.

Thanks again for all the kind words - everyone always seems to love the '96-'01 A4 - although before I bought it, one of my friends (before he knew I was considering it) referred to it as 'a Jetta for rich girls' which I think is something of a decent characterization. It's a good car, stereotypes and all - I'm loving it.

I do not consider the A4 a rich girl's car, infact I see the A4 as more of an entry level true luxury car--more so than the 3-series and C-class. I wouldn't just get rid of the car once you're out of school, I'd keep it as a second reliable car.

That is a beauty........... ful house. j/k

Congrats, Doug. Seriously, that is a beautiful Audi. That generation A4 is my favorite also, such a clean looking exterior. Love the rims, I wish the color was along lines of silver, metallic blue.. ish, but still looks great. Low miles, too. 👍

But automatics are for women.

Daan - I bought the car from a woman, the owner before her was a woman, and fully every single A4 owner I know (aside from the prior owner of this car) is a teenage girl.

But this is a step up! My prior car was owned by only elderly women. At least I'm finally in the right age bracket.

My favorite A4 is the present one, followed by the '02-'04. The '96-'01 is good, but the A4 is one of those cars that got better as the years progressed, though in my book it was never bad-looking. Obviously any A4 is better than the same generation's 3-series. :D I actually like this color best on the '96-'01 A4 - silver is too common - and in fact every single one of my family's four vehicles are in this shade of dark red.

Thanks again all for the kind words! :)

Really nice car you got there M5, looks like it is in really good condition too. Like the colour. 👍

Whoa, I haven't seen that Carrera GT shot before. Is that outside your house?

Id say more Bi-Curious - You quite like the idea of it, (changing gear manually) but your not quite ready to go one way or the other. :sly:

You wanna run that POS?
:irked:
Don't forget, with quattro, you're carrying around an invisible George Foreman in the trunk. Then again, in my current physical shape, I'm carrying around an invisible Gary Coleman...
