Fastest Turbo Car challenge on the Test Course

I think you all know that race on the Test Course inside "Tuned Turbo Car #1 Cup", where you have to complete 3 laps against some really powerful cars and even HKS 180SX, but as long as AI is retarded ;), I decided to take a car which cannot be represented as a drag car, and win the race.
I've taken Alfa 156 V6 and tuned it to the max.

It was pretty difficult to win the race - after lots of tuning and some bad tries, I finally did it. Thanks to aerodynamics brought by 180SX in the front :)

So I decided to create this topic not only to share this, but to ask you all if you can think of any less powerful / heavier car which can beat 180SX and others in this race. :)

Nice Question. To me this seems like something you would be asked on Mastermind!

I used a fully-tuned (but with no Racing Modification) '90 RX-7 Convertible and did it, although I didn't lead until the last turn. It worked out perfect.

The trick is catching the tow of the others cars at just the right time, and tuning your gearbox to handle the sudden surge in speed, since PD dials in an extra 40-50 mph when you catch a draft of 5 other cars.

Just done it - despite being less powerful and even heavier, this RX-7 appeared to be a better competitor than that Alfa :) Probably because of Alfa's FF layout.

Hehe, I've taken the cheapest available turbo car - a '88 S13 Silvia, it costed 3875 cr... I've easily beaten all of them, though.

Offtopic: guys, it seems like noone else but me and Pupik cares about this?.. Is this so boring?..

No, it's just slow here. Matter of fact, there 4 active threads in the GT2 forum..this is as busy as it'll get!! :(

But yeah...what happens is: the "Drag" cars in this race speed down the straights, yet BRAKE MASSIVELY as they enter the banks, which I think is because they can't handle the bumpiness (not to mention they can't turn very well), so PD programmed them to slow down here.

As long as you're able to maintain a constant speed and draft another car occasionally, you've got a shot against the drag cars. I remember one race here in which the dragger would get ahead of me, then I'd get ahead of him, then he'd get ahead of me!!! We kept drafting one another till I approached 250 mph...forget what I was driving..I think it was one of the Jag sedans. 👍

hey, can someone PM me a guide on how to setup for the Test Course? Because tbh...I was being blown away in my 430hp-ish Galant Super VR4 here, top end around 220mph...but i have a shortlist of cars to attempt this challenge with:
RM modded Sil80 (384hp, max upgrades)
Mazdaspeed RX7 (293hp)
Shelby GT350 (somewhere around 400hp when maxed out)

BTW AAZ, what was the HP on your Focus/RX7?

I just tried this challenge with my maxed-out Sileighty...made the mistake of setting the spring rate really stiff, so it bounced around...drew alongside the 180SX on the final corner, had him beat until the car (which felt like a bucking bronco in the corners) finally snapped and went 360 degrees...helped along by a smack by the TommyKaira R :( video is on Youtube...apologies for the quality its the best i could do.

Falcon787B:
Here are the pictures of all three cars I've mentioned here:
RX-7 Cabrio , Silvia K's , Focus 2.0 .

Settings - oh I don't remember which settings I used when I tried RX-7 or Silvia, but Focus' ones were the most important - I tried something like 50 times to beat the drag car, and everytime I failed. It was necessary not only to modify the suspension, but gearbox too - the only way to gain up to 314 km/h at the straight without drafting and up to 352 km/h with, was making 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear much longer than 5th - 5th gear was like an addition to 4th. So here are the settings:

Spring Rate: 3.0 / 2.4 kg/mm
Height: 104 / 106 mm
Damper Bound: 5 / 5
Damper Rebound: 5 / 5
Camber: 0.0 / 0.0
Toe: 0.0 / 0.0 mm
Stabilizer: 2 / 2
Brake Controller: unnecessary, I used 24 / 24
Gears: 1st: 1.482, 2nd: 0.958, 3rd: 0.678, 4th: 0.509, 5th: 0.455, Final: 5.100
Downforce: -------
LSD Initial: 1
LSD Acceleration: 1
LSD Deceleration: 1
And Manual transmission of course. <show-off>I use it everywhere, but anyway.</show-off>

Parnelli Bone:
Thanks :) But the reason why the drag car lost 0.7 seconds and was even third, is that 180SX got stuck after the turn - Supra was blocking him for some time. I think if there was no Supra ahead, this could have been a much closer race :)
Take a look at the screenshot -

Damn, I like posting screenshots... Don't know why =/

Oh thanks Skid Mark, I think that's it :)

Falcon, try to review your settings - Sileighty's springs were far too stiff... The car doesn't need to bounce so hard when you're cornering :)

Amaizing how much attention is still on GT2, PD should make a revised version for the PS3 with all the improved graphics etc... What a still cool game!

Damn Right hybridvlr...theres so much to love about GT2, namely all the little things that didnt make it onto the PS2 versions - Racing modifications, the original (and best) test course, rome night circuit, pikes peak hillclimb, the Excuse-os little brother the Cultus, all the muscle cars, Vector, Venturi, the various special Tommykaira cars (M30, R, etc)...the list goes on.
I finally did this race last night, one of the last races on my PS1 before i configured ePSXe for my pc. Using a setup based loosely around AAZs setup from above with the Focus, and with a much smoother (and faster) ride with no liftoffs, here is the result:

easy - in the corners. The HKS has blinding straightline speed (on lap 2 of the above race it streaked past me on the back straight as if i was standing still and i was at about 330km/h at the time, so all you can do on the straights is stay behind him and draft him for a speed boost, then get him on the outside in the corners because a) the AI drivers are wimps in the corners and b) the drag car cannot turn to save its life, so it has to brake more than the other cars - thats the only thing that stops it running away with the race. It's easy when you know how, it can look daunting at first but when you know how its easy...oh and a good setup helps too :P

nah, i think i used sports or super hard tyres actually...look earlier in this thread, follow AAz's Focus setup that he posted but just modify the gears in the same way for your car, as obviously the gearbox for your car is probably not the same as the one in his ford focus

Uhhh....i dunno, any ideas? I have a maxxed out Honda Prelude (302hp)...thats about it really...apart from a Nismo 270R :D

aint it the truth? I don't think I'll ever "go back" to GT3...but I will go back and play some GT2 for sure. 👍

Just tried an old '71 Skyline... I think it's impossible. Maybe somebody thinks different way? :)

It might be possible if no drag cars show up...and if you've got a racing kit installed (with minimal downforce). Doesn't this car have over 300 hp? So it might be possible...but I might be wrong, too.
