Nigel Mansell led the race until lap 70, but then suffered a loose wheel nut and was forced into the pits, emerging behind Ayrton Senna. The pair duelled around Monaco for the final three laps but Mansell could find no way past, finishing behind the Brazilian.

It was the last win for Brawn GP and for team driver Rubens Barrichello.

The first and only win of Alesi's Formula One career, on his 31st birthday. After the end of the race, Alesi ran out of fuel, and Michael Schumacher gave him a lift back to the pits on top of his car. This race also marked the last time to date that a Grand Prix was won by a car with a V12 engine.

Kimi Räikkönen won the race after starting from 17th position and overtaking race leader Giancarlo Fisichella on the final lap. It was his final victory for McLaren.

Johnny Herbert took the first win of his Formula One career, at his 74th attempt.

Massa's win was the first time that a Brazilian driver had won their home grand prix since Ayrton Senna in 1993.

Gerhard Berger won at Monza for Ferrari, in the only race of the year not won by McLaren-Honda. Michele Alboreto finished second, right behind him.

First F1 victory for Ayrton Senna. He demonstrated his proficiency in wet conditions by finishing the race at least one lap ahead of every car, except second-place finisher Michele Alboreto.

Gerhard Berger took a spectacular pole position on Saturday, and consolidated it with an emphatic victory. It was his and Benetton's last ever victory, with Berger retiring at the end of 1997.

This was Schumacher's last win for Benetton.
