SNAIL [Nissan 370Z] Challenge

GT Academy is a bridge from the racing world to the simulation racing world. Talented gamers have proven themselves for years now in the FIA GT3 Series, in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and countless other categories. The SNAIL [Nissan 370Z] Challenge attempts to bring the real and simulation worlds even closer together by using the settings provided within Gran Turismo 6 to recreate the real life feel of the Nissan 370Z.

This is a one-time SNAIL championship which aims to provide a more realistic experience offered within the physics of Gran Turismo. With the help of GT Academy Silverstone finalists as well as real-life owners of the Nissan 370Z, we have found settings in Gran Turismo which are more representative of the grip and handling characteristics of the real car. A much higher level of precision and concentration is required by the driver. Making mistakes and missing apexes will not be as easily forgiven. Aggressive sliding and throwing the car around will not help improve lap times. Gran Turismo helps gamers improve their real life driving skills, and our aim is to cultivate even better driving habits that will translate more fluidly to real life. We invite anyone wishing to improve as a driver to join this championship. The difficulty is greater, but so is the satisfaction.

Rules

All of the normal SNAIL rules apply for racecraft and conduct.

Settings

Most of the normal SNAIL room settings apply. A few changes have been made in order to increase the level of realism and difficulty. Because this is a one make spec championship and certain tuning standards need to be achieved in order to reach the desired level of realism, brake balance tuning will be prohibited. This will be enforced by a “tech inspection” after each race. The details of the tech inspection will be explained later. Every effort will be made to keep the level of adjustment offered within the game to a minimum.

Qualifier Settings:

Race Format: Race Alone

Start Type: Final Corner Start

Time Limit: Enough for 2 timed laps

Race Settings:

Start Type: Grid Start with False Start Check

Grid Order: Fastest First

Boost: Off
Penalty: Off
Race Finish Delay: 180sec
Visible Damage: On
Mechanical Damage: Heavy
Slipstream Strength: Real
Tire Wear/Fuel Consumption: Normal
Grip Reduction: Real
Vehicle Tuning: Prohibited
Driving Aids: Only ABS allowed

Car Settings:

Spec Car: Fairlady Z (Z34) '08

Tire Restrictions: Comfort Medium

PP Limit: 461

Horsepower Limit: 331

Weight Limit: 1,530 KG

Spec Settings for All Cars:

Spec Brake Balance: 4 (Front), 4 (Rear)

Wheels: Stock

As a way to keep the handling as close to the realistic feel of the Nissan 370Z as possible, and to help eliminate any tuning that is possible within Gran Turismo and put the focus of this championship on the skill of the driver as much as possible, all competitors are required to tune their cars with the above settings.

Tech Inspection Procedure:

At the end of every race, the winner will undergo a “tech inspection.” This is to ensure that every competitor does not adjust the brake balance settings. Also the race director will inspect the replays to ensure that all competitors have the stock wheels outfitted from the dealership to their cars. Any car without stock wheels will be disqualified.

1) The winner of every race will be asked to re-enter the track after the race is over.

2) If that driver goes into the settings screen at any point (indicated by the wrench icon next to their name) before re-entering the track, he will be disqualified.

3) The winning driver will be asked to go on track and take a screenshot of their brake balance settings from the RA function menu. The screenshots should look like this:

TechExF.jpg

TechExR.jpg

4) The winner must then send the screenshots verifying they comply with brake balance settings to the race director by either a personal message on GTPlanet, email, or even text message.

Race Dates:

All races will be held at 3:00 PM ET on Saturdays. A second race will be held at 4:00 PM ET if there are enough participants. If necessary, these separate race times may be used to create separate divisions of drivers based on skill level. The number of laps for each race will be set so each race lasts about 40 minutes in length. Also to make this series as realistic as possible, some races may feature unannounced variable weather conditions. Be prepared to race in the rain on race day. Again, there will be no advanced warning of the track conditions before the race. The schedule and tracks are as follows:

2/14/15 – Fuji Speedway F (19 laps)

2/21/15 – Silverstone National (36 laps)

2/28/15 – Nurburgring GP/F

3/7/15 – Special Stage Route 5 (23 laps)

3/14/15 – Circuit de Spa Francochamps

Points Structure:

Points will be awarded for the first 10 finishing positions as follows:

1st – 25 points

2nd – 18 points

3rd – 15 points

4th – 12 points

5th – 10 points

6th – 8 points

7th – 6 points

8th – 4 points

9th – 2 points

10th – 1 point

Each driver’s lowest scoring race will be dropped from their total championship points.

How to Sign Up:

1) Post on this thread saying you would like to join. Do not PM me.

2) Wait for a reply to your post. Follow any instructions provided.

There will be a limit of 30 drivers that can participate each week. If more than 30 people express interest in joining this championship, they will be placed on a waiting list. Participation is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Oooohhhh....comfort mediums, spec settings, and variable weather conditions....Sounds awesome! Not sure I can commit to run at that time every week though.

Will a qualifier be run for the second race? Or will it be reverse grid? Or is that second race just intended to be run if there is overflow (more than 16 drivers) in the first race/room?

I want to join

Glad to hear it man! Check your PMs.

Yeah the second race is intended for overflow right now. It all depends on how many people sign up, but it's there just in case the entries get maxed out. And it would be awesome to see you out there even if you can't make every race. There will be practices before race 1 so I'll let you know when those happen.

I'd be interested in joining although not sure how many times I will be available during the day on a Saturday. I can try for now, but would hate to take up a spot if I can't make it at some point down the road.

I think you are going to have problems with damage set to "heavy" due to lag. The problem with lag is that it can appear suddenly at any time and cause punting, huge frame rate drops, cause people to not see each other on track, and all sorts of issues, as you may know. With damage on "heavy" your race is over if you get lag punted. If you are running a big room, then the lag effects just get more pronounced and more frequent.

Also if you are trying to help people prepare for GT Academy, as far as I know they have never had tire wear on at any of the national finals. Tire wear also means you can't compare lap times from lap to lap which makes it hard to see improvement real clearly.

Really like the stock car on CM tires, that will be a great challenge.👍

Well I'll send a PM your way with the instructions for signing up anyway :D. It's your call if you want to take it further. I'll be in contact with anyone who misses a race or two anyway. No point in having a waiting list if I don't manage it, right?

And I wanted to do this as a means of enhancing real life driving skill and to eliminate some of the not-so-realistic driving you can get away with, or even use to your advantage, in Gran Turismo. So yeah this isn't really intented to prepare anyone for the video game portion of national finals. Hopefully it can help develop a better sensitivity for driving the real car and that would then translate to better skills to apply in the game.

As for the heavy damage, if it becomes an issue I'll change it to weak. I honestly don't anticipate it being a likely problem though because voice chat will be off (to decrease data sent to the players), and the races will occur at a lower-traffic time for PD and everyone's local servers. But I'll switch it if lag becomes an issue. The point of the series is to be as realistic as possible and I think circumstances will be favorable to run it at heavy damage.

@redsoxboy80 Is this the Nissan Fairlady 370Z 08'? I looked for the car mentioned in the first post and possibly could have overlooked it in the dealership. Just wanting some clarification please. Thanks.

Yeah it's the '08 Fairlady. I'll update the OP with the exact car name to avoid any confusion.

And @postman09, the first race is next Saturday so you'll be alright.

Gentlemen, the idea of belting around in this motor on C/M fills my heart with joy. However, I have a couple of queries.

Is the time you run the race compatible with taking part in the UK without having to get out of bed specifically?

I use a G25 and am under the impression that I don't have access to the AR menu, is this wrong? (I'm a tech doofuss by the way, you might have gathered.)

If a chap does have access to the AR menu, might he not just complete 99% of the race with whatever BB set-up he wants, and then change to 4-4 at the last moment, so that it looks like he has complied?

Cheers, thanks for your time, Zo.

Well 3pm on this side of the pond should be 8 pm on your side. As for the RA menu, you should be able to go into the options menu and set the buttons on the wheel however you like, or you can just use the PS3 controller to bring up the RA menu too.

And a nice feature in GT6 now is that with tuning set to prohibited, you can't adjust brake balance on track. So no worries there mate ;).

Redsox, I accept what you're saying, but, having said that, my level of competence on the technical front means that, although I have tried, I have not been able to configure my G25 to allow access to the AR menu. If anyone can give me guidance on this matter on a 'click by click' basis I'd appreciate it.

Finally, if tuning is prohibited (a notion I fully support) then why does it say:

all competitors are required to tune their cars with the above settings

This suggests to me that tuning is allowed.

I recognise that I'm a newcomer to these regs, and I do not wish to incur the wrath of any of the organisers, but if the race is to be held under 'tuning prohibited' regs then surely the use of the word 'tune' in respect of any of the settings is something which should be avoided in order to prevent confusion (such as that my addled old brain is experiencing right now).

Cheers, Zo.
