I'm originally a city boy from Dublin but I now live in a small village called Gowran (pronounced Goran) which is probably best known in Ireland for its lovely race track, Gowran Park. Normally, the contestants are of the 1 horsepower variety but in July the Gowran Festival of Speed is going to be held there so the horsepower gathered together at the track will reach unprecedented levels. There's going to be a Formula 1 car doing demo runs and a large gathering of modern and historic rally cars including a number of Group B cars so it's something I'm really looking forward to.

On Friday evening last I was sent out to get some shopping and when I arrived home and got out of the car I could hear the scream of a number of cars and I could tell they were competition cars by the sound of the close ratio gear changing. So the groceries weren't even taken out of the car as I got straight back in to go investigate.

The race course is only a 1 minute drive down the road and as I approached with the windows down I could tell the that's where the racket was coming from so in I went and much to my delight this was the first thing I saw!

It was the official media launch of the upcoming festival and there were 4 cars giving demo runs. The Stratos, a Metro 6R4 an Opel Ascona and a lovely Mk1 Escort which is owned and regularly driven in historic rallies by Joe Connolly who also happens to be the Chairman of Gowran Park and and who is the driving force behind this event.

This is his Escort:

It doesn't look as dramatic as the Stratos but it is an animal to go and I made sure I blagged a couple of laps with Joe. So there I was thinking I was just going out for a bit of shopping and then to sit in and have a quiet night with a nice bottle of wine and all of a sudden there I am in the passenger seat of a rally car topping out at 105 mph along a very narrow piece of tarmac circulating a horse racing track with its BDG engine screaming up to 9,000 rpm! It just couldn't get any better than that.

The lads were taking footage all the time so they said they'd send me the video of my run but in the meantime here's a video taken by a guy who went out with Joe earlier in the evening.

I was the last out so we packed the car away and headed into the bar for a drink and a chat with all the gathered petrolheads so it was a nice unexpected surprise which was only interrupted when my wife rang me to ask where the hell I was! :lol:

You sir, are one lucky man... My dream car in rally spec... The sound of the ferrari v6 screaming away... Mesmerizing

@Evolvo

Two different groups

Porsche, BMW
or
Chevy, Ford

Except...

it's more like

Spec Racing Series A
Series B

Different rules, cars, races, not a WRS vs. SNAIL issue, just different.

Just wondering if anyone could explain the difference between Snail and WRS.

Thanks,

Might want to go have a look at the WRS forum/threads for that one. I believe WRS might still be just about your fastest lap at a given combo? SNAIL is about competing on track with others, like club racing.

Unfortunately, that one doesn't have the Dino engine as it is a very good replica rather than the real thing. I asked the driver was it a real one and he answered "Do you think I'd be driving it around there if it was!" It did sound good though as it is powered by an Alfa 3.0 V6 with straight through exhausts.

I can still count myself lucky though I saw the real thing in action 1977 when it was driven in the Circuit of Ireland Rally by Irish Rally legend, Billy Coleman (Google Billy Coleman Chequered Flag Stratos) and the nice thing is that Billy himself will be one of the guests of honour at the Festival so I'll get a chance to meet a hero of mine.

I would like to post the replay videos of my race on here. I don't have any video capture technology. What do I do? Can I save the files to my computer and then upload them to Youtube?

@Evolvo
@Gravitron

Would you care to have a bash at answering the above question please?
I was waiting for our resident double-dipper to answer that, @Nail-27. ;)

In short WRS hosts week-long offline time trials here, and we race those combos online on Wed's and Sat's here, usually 5-7min quali period followed by a 50min race, usually with pit stops being necessary. Lately we have been getting an average of ~10 people per race. We also have other special events like this past weekend: GTP WRS-Online : Special XI - 2.4 Hour Suzuka SuperGT Mixed Class Enduro - June 6/7.

I think the quality of on-track racing between our leagues is probably very similar, as are the on-track rules/penalties. But I'd say the fun factor is probably higher here in SNAIL because with a group of online racers that equates to about 10X the size of active drivers in the WRS, a single room with a single division is going to have most participants being of similar speed, whereas WRS has 3 divisions all crammed in 1 room and it's usually a forgone conclusion that a D1 driver is going to win. :indiff: But the racing keeps me coming back, despite the fact that I never win.

Also the prize system here in SNAIL is excellent, people getting to choose combos and such, combined with the fact SNAIL has 3 different combos to have mastered every Sunday and has reverse grid races as well. 👍

Both leagues are well-supported by hard-working groups of volunteers. :cheers:

A PVR, connected to a Receiver, is generally considered the best way to record GT replays for social media consumption. There are alternatives but they usually result in poor quality video reproduction. Either will cost you money and time.

What's that....it's Monday.....? That must mean it's time for Monday Night Pack Racing.
The most fun racing around. I hope to see a few new faces there tonight.... Wrathqueen, this means you. FR to Nail27 to join. I will have my defibulator set on high in anticipation.
I think I'm down for this tonight! I had such a blast last night that I want to keep the party going!

WRS and SNAIL....very different but the same...sorta.
The basic difference is that the guys in WRS have been racing TOGETHER on the same track regardless of ability forever. Thus, unlike SNAIL the same guys race week after week with the occasional new guy so they KNOW what the other guy is going to do with all abilities racing in the same race. The emphasis in WRS is very well thought out close hard racing with little policing necessary usually except for new guys ( like me when they ganged up on me and took me off to the side and had an impromptu this is how to do it come to Jesus meeting). In fact it was a couple of WRS old heads that pointed me at SNAIL to get SEAT Time with guys of my own ability and to "GET BETTER". They race three times a week plus special events....none of which conflict with SNAIL Sunday Nights.

The SNAIL half in a few hours...got to go have fun in one of SNAILs satellite series...Monday Night Pack racing....which I created to have a place for new guys to learn about situational Awareness and no sierra Door to Door...while having an illeagle ammount of fun.

Now...ahem....ITS MONDAY ....Miatas and BR ZEDS...actually drove one last week....SWEET.
Be there at 7:30 central......checking my FRs for late new guys right now.

If you have FRs out to me me I will send an invite. Respond and go to room 1013119. Bring a Miata Eunos Roadster (NA Special Package) 89 and any of the BRZ Clones. Change oil...show up.

That don't look like no GT6 room number to me. Looks an awful lot like a Club number there Captain.

Hay @Jaguara you should try this to get you over some of your nerves!
Good idea, I got this message a bit too late for tonight. Maybe next week.

I was online too, banging my head against that last GTAcademy race even though Canadians don't qualify - I just want that 1.8 million for gold. I swear the track boundaries without lines, the put one tire over the line and you are out, the even look at a cone and you are disqualified is driving me nuts. Had so many good runs scratched it is driving me nuts.
