08 WRX came in today

^ Well, it was just some tongue-in-cheek humor. Was directed at no one in particular...

Duke is a real car guy too. You can't be willing to drive 2 hours, then eat a crappy lunch and stand in the sun for 6 hours with me just to get 3 minutes of seat time and not be real car guy. ;)

M

All right all right, Duke to :dopey: He owns a Bimmer and he Auto-X, so I guess so.

On my YSSMAN bit, I know it was tongue in cheek, as is mine ;) Brad is use to me going off about his bizarre love for VW, just like I am use to him kicking Toyota at every chance :sly:

You do realise that the only people that pose more than Impreza/Evo owners are owners of £60k plus cars, right?

Image is a huggge thing with a car like this.

Awesome, it will get the posers out of Subarus, which will be nice. Seen way way too many at events, and they drive me nuts with how cocky they are about their driving skills because they are posting decent runs... which its mostly the car getting them those.

well what would you expect when you're dismissal of Subaru apparently comes from windows that probably function better, a switch that isn't necessary, and an exhaust that was probably necessitated by design and has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with any performance (or even cosmetic really) aspect of the car... It would be like me completely swearing off of new Mercedes because the grille doesn't open with the hood, the window switches are on the door, and the sunroofs are transparent...

there are better reasons to not like a new car

To some fans, small details can be huge. I personally wouldn't care too much about the headlight shut off, or which side the exhaust is on, but whatever. I do appreciate the pics posted. Very nice. 👍

WRX does indeed look ugly and boring. I'm feeling that somehow, the look is going to grow on me. Stranger things have happend. :D

Edit:
This is true. Most petrolheads agree that the Z3-M Coupe is a fantastic vehicle.
Huh? M-Coupe is the best looking M car. ;)

I think you just summed up YSSMAN's entire mentality there, just missing the "and despite VW's having long term quality issues, they are the absolute best car for everyone."

Zing!

...I'm not always like that, only most of the time...

Follow-ups to outstandingly great cars can still be great cars, but the problem is that while Subaru has followed up a good car with what amounts to a good car, they had to take away so much of what made its predecessor cool that it just isn't the same. Its exactly what happened with the Civic (6th to 7th Gen), its exactly what happened to the Protegé (Ninth to M3).

Automakers need to realize that messing with the "formula" is what kills their cars. Marginalizing it even to the slightest is what takes away what made their cars "cool" to begin with, and although they may not get as many sales as the bread-and-butter Corolla that everyone (bleh!) can enjoy, they keep their die-hards and win-overs happy.

And I hate to use VW as an example (since I always do), but its part of what has kept their cars so appealing... They haven't had to change their cars to bring in sales because they have that crazy fanbase to keep them running. This is why everyone benchmarks the Golf in Europe, and does much the same in America. They build good cars by not having to conform, which is what really makes me sad about Subaru. I love how "odd" the Legacy and Forester are by comparison to say a Camry and a Jetta Wagon, and thats what makes them special.

Of course, much of this comes down to a company having the money to keep their cars excellent, furthermore to keep their cars as class-leading models. Subaru either had to marginalize to bring in the Corolla and Civic sales, or they had to get radical to try and keep what they had and grab sales from Mitsubishi and VW.

WHAT!?!
OK, that's it. I'm now officially boycotting Mercedes.

...Or not. Even though their Bank Vault - Quality cars are still my favorite.

Please, please tell me that's a... a... a... not a Subaru. Please.

I took the time to type in the italic formatting. You know I'm desperate because usually I just capitalize it.

-No new versions of a previously great car can be great. They always suck. That's because new is different and different is bad.

Mustang GT. Pontiac G8. Nissan GT-R. Rolls-Royce Phantom. Mercedes S-Class. Cadillac CTS. Just to name a few.

*Back door opens as Pako quietly voices a simple observation*

In light of my recent 2008 Legacy GT Purchase I have a couple remarks:

It has frameless windows (which I now see is a design flaw, actually from the first day of ownership, I had to retrain myself to close the door from something other than the window)

It has a parking light button on the steering wheel. It's the only button on the entire car that can run the battery down.

Exhaust is on the left........., well.....it's also on the right.

*door closes as Pako leaves*

P.S. I hate the new WRX body style.

👍

I love the Legacy(s). Congrats, Pako. I am super jealous, and if you don't believe me, you can ask my friend who had the loaner Legacy for just couple of days. :D

I'll be cruzin' close to your neck of the woods next week with the family on vacation in Lincoln City....not sure how far that is from your stompin' grounds but you can bet I'm making the trip in the Legacy. :)

I think it's just couple of hours away. I've lived here forever, and I don't know the coast at all. I live near Portland.

Actually, you should be happy that they're going to framed windows. Frameless windows have been a pain in the ass for over 30 years. They're noisier, harder to keep in adjustment, easier to break and break into, and require a lot more maintenance over the life of a car, especially if you keep it for more than 3 years. No car that is not a convertible or targa should have frameless windows.

+1,000... in test drives, modern Subarus feel solid... or almost solid... that flexy, vibrating piece of glass coming out of the top of the door looks great, but feels like crap when you're closing the door.

Really, who cares? I want my exhaust routed whichever way makes the most engineering sense for lightest weight, free-est flow, and best note. Not to be arbitrarily set to one side or the other of the car.

It should actually go out both sides... for balance...

I wonder how many customers Saab will lose if they put their ignition key where it's supposed to be? :D

Remember how much they (Saab fans) complained when they weren't sure if the 9-7X was going to have the console key or not? Apparently its a pretty big deal... (Funny thing, I never made a thread, but they're selling the 9-7X Aero with the 390 BHP LS2 these days)

Every car company has its quirks, some better than others. I hate the damn chime that VW has for when you leave your lights on, but I miss it when I'm in the Grand Prix. Same goes with the VW "light dial," where you have to select what you want, which makes more sense to me than whats on a stick in a Camry (although, GM and Ford are using dials now). I loved the green lights in the older VWs on the dash, and when they went to Purple, they made a few people upset... But it looks cool, so we forgot about it...

oh dear me, what have they done? They've definitely lost the youth market...i think this model's aimed at mums and dads...
You're forgetting something there, it is primarily "mums and dads" that sit with the money.

On those rare occasions where kids actually have money to spend on a car; they spend it on the more exciting, and most likely older cars.

And on a related note; here's the rally-spec WRC-car; due to be presented by Petter Solberg in Frankfurt later this year.

Now, imagine that on the road. Not so bad anymore, is it?

Now that looks 100x's better! Oh it's bad alright, bad to the bone.

It depends on where you're at I suppose. Most kids I went to school with who could afford cars like these bought either WRXs or Mustang GTs simply because they were fast and most importantly, cheap. The kids are going to go for the cars that are in effect made for them, but it appears as though Subaru doesn't care quite as much about that 18-24 year old market as they do maybe the 25-35 year old market. But by the end, the looks scream 40+.

Thanks for buying Subaru from GM, Toyota...

Brad, I'm gonna come through the internets and slap you for that! :P

It still has a turbo four last I checked, and I really don't see what the problem is with the styling... let me list cars with similar styling that I don't see bitching about all the time.

Mazda3
Focus
Euro Civic Hatch (Okay, a bit of bitching here)
Versa
Caliber
Astra (which I know Brad will claim is "teh greatest car evar" or such ;) )

I mean, yes, its a hatch. Omfg, so is everything else. But its still a Subaru, they've never been known for making pretty cars... XT, GL, Legacy wagon, Impreza WRXs in the US, etc. In fact, everything they use to have was ugly as sin, they are just going back to being true Subaru ;)

I make joke, people laugh.

Certainly the new Impreza is styled in the same vein as the others listed there, but the problem is that it is neither quirky nor interesting at all by comparison to its predecessors, or the others listed. While I wouldn't have considered the 2007 Impreza the best-looking car ever, it at the very least was different, and thats always a good thing.

Its just so boring to look at now, so it comes off as a disappointment. When it looks more like a Toyota than a Subaru, thats a problem. The Legacy sets the bar pretty high at Subaru for what the cars could and should look like, but unfortunately Subaru didn't get the message when re-doing the Impreza.

But even they could have taken a page from VW: They manage to make the GTI and R32 look quite good over the "boring" Golf/Rabbit (well, I think they look nice stock).

I make joke, people laugh.

Heck, I laughed even, and thus my own crazy sense of humor kicked in ;)

I will not disagree it is a bit more bland than some of the competitors, but that is why I am looking forward to the STi and WRX trims. The previous base Impreza's were not exactly thrilling to look at either, for that matter. And I really liked the look of the 06 WRXes.

Just one of those matters of opinion/taste. Just like how you like VW and I think they are gonna have the doors fall off, and how I think Toyota is actually exci... er, well, I have to agree on the boring part, mostly :sly: But they still have a quality product.

I think these things are gonna sell well, if not better. And I think people are gonna realize they still go like stink as well. Subaru will be as okay as they have ever been.

Hideous and retarded are the two words I have reserved for the new Imprezas. And here I thought the previous gen with its center grille hole thingy was bad. I'd rather see a Tribeca face than this rubbish. Great reliable car yes, but looks like ASS. I can't drive something that looks rubbish but is super reliable and fun. That just doesn't float my boat. When I get out to go shopping or whatnot I want to be able to turn back and see how beautiful it is before I lock it and walk away. ****, I spend 5 minutes staring at my 3000GT VR4 when I got out of it everytime. Am I shallow? Probably, but when you pay for something it shouldn't look repulsive.

As I figured. Nevermind. Forget I posted.

I'm done bitching anyway. What's done is done. Subaru made their decision and I made mine.
You were serious, weren't you? I'd half convinced myself you couldn't possibly have been that torqued.
I wish I had so little to be so angry about!

an exhaust system that is mounted on the left side of the car (which we all know is the faster side).
Through a complex formula, I have determined that it adds +10 BHP.

Though I think the new Rex is a nasty looking Corolla clone (and by choosing to go mainstream at the same time Mitsu decided to kick it up a notch I think its pretty dumb on Subarus part), I doubt the fact that Subaru dulling the car down to be more mainstream will effect sales that much. Or at least not as much as it would for, say, Saab.

I have a question, though: Why is it that people who find the new Rex atrocious for various middling reasons are some kind of terrorists, but any time anyone considers bringing up some kind of character diluting piece for brands like Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini the shoe is on the other foot?

Yeah, I was serious. And when I read your post, I figured I must have been completely wrong about automotive enthusiasm this whole time. I thought it was okay to be enthusiastic about little quirks that made a car different from other cars, but I guess not. Automotive enthusiasm is about SPEED and nothing else but SPEED.

I'm terribly sorry.

I wish I had so little to be so angry about!

You don't know me very well do you?

You don't really think that the $6 or whatever it is a month (could be completely wrong on that) actually goes towards the process of editing a name? Jordan just purchased a new server with our Primo money.

in my crazy mixed up head its not just about speed, but it isn't just about the smallest details either. Auto-enthusiasm (sounds like some sort of sex thing :yuck: ) is about everything related to whatever you are interested in, in my head if you like Subarus it shouldn't just be about tiny little details or speed. Its about Subaru as a whole. I agree with you that I have trouble accepting the new WRX but its more about the boorish styling and seemingly reduced performance (for now at least). Jumping the Subaru ship because of this is like changing your favorite sports team because they lost too many games or changed coaches or something like that.
