Those, who are attentive enough, will see 'Saving Data' mark at the bottom right of the screen right before the car shows up..
If you want to re-do this process, you'll have to do it the same way, how are you doing car duping glitch. (Backup-Delete save-Paste backup into savegame folder).

I got mine with 8.500 km done, so it's not based on total distance, probably distance on 1 single track or something like that.
