2.500 final gear is faster, 1000m challenge

I would keep rpms at 5500 - 6500 for the Supra, and 7000 - 8000 for the Aristo. On the first gears where i loose more than 1000rpms when shifting, i would just be sure they don't drop below max torque rpms (4000 for Supra, 3500 for Aristo).

But for some cars with traction problems, like some TVRs... i keep rpms lower (around max torque) to improve traction/acceleration, and only go to high rpms (max power) on straights.

I know this isn't the perfect formula, Jmac should get better results with the Excel calcs, but i think it's close and it's fairly easy to implement without going into deep calcs...

Well, the Supra has a 6 speed transmission so you can get the gearing as close as ~81% average, so ideally, you'd want to shift at 6625 RPM and you'd end up at ~5375 RPM ... This is, of course, assuming you use that 81% ratio for all the gears

Example:

1st = 3.013
2nd = 2.443 (81%)
3rd = 1.982 (81%)
4th = 1.607 (81%)
5th = 1.303 (81%)
6th = 1.057 (81%)
Final = 3.100

With more powerful cars, you can typically use taller low gears (which generally helps acceleration as well since you don't have as many problems with traction) while using narrower high gears to keep the RPMs close to peak power. This technique is equally useful with weak and/or narrow powerband engines, although you typically have to give up a considerable amount of low speed acceleration (if you don't crash/spin-out a lot, this shouldn't matter much to you.)

Example:

1st = 3.013
2nd = 2.240 (74%)
3rd = 1.817 (81%)
4th = 1.508 (83%)
5th = 1.281 (85%)
6th = 1.114 (87%)
Final = 2.942

The torque curve only really matters in 1st gear. As soon as you shift, the only thing that is important is the power curve (keep power as high as possible).

Great tips 👍 !
BTW I post my excel file that can calculate start rpm when changing gear on new thread.

i always tune the tranny as close as possible to keep the engine in it's powerband & make the final drive ratio as low as possible without losing traction. my fully tuned spoon civic does 12.2 somethins in the 0-400 test exactly how i race it, & i have one setting i use for race & one for dirt. but it tops out at 140 or so, but acceleration out of the corners is what i concentrate on, for example, i've beaten every race that the car can enter except the GT300 & 500 off course. i've ran trial mountain in the 1:22 range (i'd have to look at my replay to remeber exactly what it was) besides, how many stock geared cars top out on most straits?

You are saying that top speed is equal to final drive? no, at least not in GT2. Auto 11 on 2.500 have the same top speed as auto 11 on 5.500 final drive, but 400m and 1000m time using 2.500 final drive is faster.

it seems that you are using:
auto 1 on 5.500 and move final drive to the top speed you want.
you can get close gear by using auto 1 on any final drive and set the gear config to:
|xxxxxx
xx|xxxxx
xxx|xxx
xxxx|xx
xxxxx|x
xxxxxx|

Even though right now I use
|xxxxxx
|xxxxxx
xxx|xxx
xxxx|xx
xxxxx|x
xxxxxx|
to optimize the maximum power on the higher gear

right now, I tune my car so it have faster 1000m. Using different gear config can give different 400m time but almost the same 1000m. I chose slower 400m, and faster 1000m time (faster 400m to 1000m)

BTW, I think spoon Civic can win GT300, because we have faster acceleration than Momo MR2 :)

Sucahyo, i think that's true only for you... because changing final drive without changing auto or individual gear settings does change top speed! Both in real life and in GT2.

Yes, I just show him, that in GT2 you can get the same top speed using different final drive (unlike GT1).
I still don't get "make the final drive ratio as low as possible without losing traction" though.

Yes, but to have same speed with different final drive you need to change auto and/or individual gear ratios.

"make the final drive ratio as low as possible without losing traction" - i also don't get that one...
With lower final drive ratio, you have less torque at the wheel, making it harder to wheelspin, meaning better traction... :rolleyes:

After looking the power chart, I think finding good gear setting for spoon civic is hard, peaky engine with maximum power on 9700, with 13500 rev limit, using auto trans will make the engine change gear at 12500 which is too high because the power is less at this rpm........
I either has to use
1: 4.836, gear change at 13728
2: 3.417, gear change at 12190
3: 2.719, gear change at 11818
4: 2.232, gear change at 11469
5: 1.887
which is very hard to remember ...........

or
1: 4.836
2: 3.753
3: 2.912
4: 2.260
5: 1.754
easier, less optimal, using auto trans (calculated to start at 9700 rpm)

I always use manual transmission. Automatic transmission is bad in many ways...

Take a look at maximum power and redline of Pennzoil's Skyline, i think it's the worst car to use auto...
There's more cars where maximum power comes much sooner than redline, while in other cars maximum power is at the end of redline, like the MR2 GT-S, so you never get there with auto transmission.

Yes, I think so, but I keep forgetting to shift when using manual, and make my time slower .............
BTW, what final drive did you use for penzoil skyline? I use more than 4.500 to make smooth acceleration (reduce rpm ripple).

I have it with 3.5, but i don't think it's tweaked... or has just a light tweak, because most settings aren't the way i usually have them.
That car, like all special models, already comes with a nice setup so i think i didn't bothered to fine tune it yet.

I always drive with manual transmission in every game i play, and also in real life. I think in North America auto transmission are very popular (correct me if i'm wrong) but here in Europe nearly every car has manual transmission, so driving with auto its something that never crosses my mind... :rolleyes:

This is very true. At my job, 95% of the cars I work on have automatic transmissions. It seems most of our customers are yuppies or older folks. It gets to the point that when I actually get into a car with a manual transmission I'll have to remember to leave it in gear when I shut it off!

I too drive a manual in real life...it's been years since I had an automatic (a 1974 Ford van. I called it the kidnapper because it had no windows in the back, therefore nobody knew I was sleeping back there). In the game, I drive manual most of the time, but occasionally i'll switch to auto just for variety.

Well I finally did an oil change on a Prius about a month ago. I knew I eventually would; many people where I live have them. Those things are weird (the Prius). It took me about 10 minutes just to figure out how to get it to move (push the start button while pressing the BRAKE pedal. Then, keep pressing the brakes while putting it in Neutral then Drive) then once it's moving, it just rolls along silently just like the Prius in the game. The engine only cuts in when you need acceleration, but never got above 3,000 rpm or so. It never has to shift gears. I also worked on a hybrid Lexus SUV (I forget the model name) which has a stronger engine than the Prius, but still great on gas mileage. driving those 2, I got the same feeling like I was 16 all over again and just learning how to drive.

you asked for it.

I live in the great white north and manual cars are pretty popular. I mean, it's not like people are hopping around in manual Taurus's or anything, but if it has over 150hp it usually has a manual option. Nissan cars, hondas, fords, chevys...lots of manual.

I drive in manual too, automatic has set shift points and for certain courses like laguna (specifically turn 1) i like to keep a high gear like 3 or even 4 with the low power to pull out of it. If I'm in automatic it usually just wants to keep me at high gear 2, and spin me right out.

hmmm... where's that? Greenland? Siberia? Norway? Alaska? :odd:

Here it's more like... 1 or 2 models in each manufaturer has the option for an auto transmission. :rolleyes:

Ahh... on that corner i do something completely different. I like to use a short 2nd gear in high revs to make the rear slide through the corner.
Hmm... what a delicious drifting... :dopey:

hmm, I never drive auto car, is it fun ? All the car that I drive is manual, mostly SUV and van, the car that I drive that featured in GT2 is prelude with 4 wheel steering (4 wheel steering feels good, 120kmph and mommy at the back seat doesn't notice ;) ) and escudo (little scary when goes over 100kmph).
And I rarely use manual in GT2...........

I usually do throttle tapping in that corner.

Oh yeah. Laguna turn #1 (known in real life as the Andretti hairpin). When I was a newb, I often cut across the area on the left where that little road is, but now I try and keep it real. That's a great turn. I've won a few races via a well-timed power slide or delicate brake timing. ¬
