I still think the biggest bits of news is mostly going to be about the resurgance of the Camaro, the new Challenger, and the GT500 Mustang... But we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I wish I could go this year, but I won't be. My father and I flew out of Milwaukee to Detroit and went for the weekend last year, but this year my father is in San Frascisco so we won't be going.

Since I live only 30 minutes from Cobo I'll be attending January 16th, I'll be sure to get pictures. If there is anything you want to see let me know and I'll do my best to take some pictures, and better yet some video.

I'm going to the Chicago Auto Show in Febuary. The McCormic center is bigger (therefore more room to look at more cars), cleaner, and is about the same distance from my home in Grand Rapids when compared to Cobo in Detroit. There are usually a few extra models in Chicago as well, and it is nice knowing a bit about the cars beforehand (from knowlege learned from Detroit).

??? Umm...What?

Anyways, I cannot wait to see the Mazda Kabura!
Darn. I tried to find out what this car looks like, but I guess there are no photo until the autoshow? I did find a concept drawing that looks pretty cool. While I was looking for Kabura photo, I saw the concept version of CX-7. I guess CX-7 is the cross-over vehicle that seems like a mix of a compact sports sedan and a light-duty SUV. Looks very interesting. 👍 I hope Mazda will have the production version available for the Detroit Show. :)

The Kabura a new MX-3? Somebody please keep Famine out of here.

I was going to ask Blazin' for some particular photos, but there are just too many! Take them all, man!

Ah, I forgot all about the MX-3s. I guess it could be like a RWD MX-3. Since famine's Lotus Esprit plan fell through while back, it just might stir his interest. :D

Well, many people from the RX8 and RX7 forums have been to a mazda focus group meeting where they were showed the car well before it even had a name. Apparently that drawing is what you should expect it to look like. About the CX-7, its completely production ready. It will have the Mazdaspeed 6's turbo 4 cylinder, just slightly detuned to around 244hp not sure about the torque though. The CX-7 will have a 6 speed automatic. It will look just like the earlier photo's mazda has released, basically looks exactly like the MX Crossport that's in GT4. Infact its supposed to hit mazda dealer's this spring.

Supposedly some of the RX-8/RX-7 Forum people said the Kabura will not be a Rotary, and instead will be an entry level sports coupe.

Which would be awesome, as there hasn't been a REAL entry level sports coupe (I.E. RWD) in what...a decade?

Miata? Soltice? Sky?

Nope, no Sports COUPES there.

I.E. Hardtop, stiffer frame, better platform for handling modifications, more power, etc, etc, etc.

So, again, the Nissan Urge, and Mazda Kabura look like the first entry level RWD sport coupes in almost a decade. To be fair, a V-6 Mustang isn't a bad platform to build off of, but the Fox bodies are heavy, and the '05 and up models are still pricey for pretty low performance.

Gotcha, it's rumoured that a hard top Soltice is due out in 2008

Ah, like the BEAUTIFUL Original Solstice Concept?

That would be nice, of course, here's hoping they don't Porsche it..."yeah, we know the Hardtop is usually cheaper than the Convertible, but we feel like charging more for it...now bend over and say 'ahhh'..."

It will be part of a racing package for the Soltice I suppose, I don't really know I've only heard a few talks.

Ah.

Well, here's hoping they offer a stripper version, basic equipment list, basic I-4, 5 speed standard, hardtop, starting at like...oh...I could dream for a $17,000 price point to start.

Hopefully if the Japanese bring over some entry coupes, they truly make them entry cars for a good deal under $20,000.

Assuming GM does do a Solstice hardtop, this is a good starting point:
The Pontiac Solstice GXP Turbo

- 2.0L direct injection ECOTEC I4
- 260bhp, 260 ft/lbs of torque
- Around $24,000 when it goes on sale this summer

The problem with entry-level RWD coupes over the past two decades has been numbers compared to FWDs. The last "entry-level" rear wheel drive coupe, the Silvia, was a better handler than, say, a Celica or an Integra, but sales would say otherwise. The cost of production versus sales and profit didn't make it easy for anyone else to eye that market while Mazda and Nissan... and then Nissan alone, were slogging it out.

Heck, numbers in that market are killing off the Celica, too. Good riddance... you killed off our Silvia!

The Miata and Solstice are perfect entry-level sports cars... at least, the Miata has only ever been a roll-cage away from being a respectable trackster. There was even an experimental fixed-top before the last generation Miata was phased out. Don't know if it was official or aftermarket, though.

It will be interesting to see, though, what Mazda and Nissan are cooking up, and whether a Solstice hardtop is seriously possible.

I'm looking to pick up an older Miata myself pretty soon.

Eventually I'd like to remove the convertible top and windshield, toss the trunk, and change the rear fenders and make it a fastback coupe.

Still would be nice to have new rwd cars available for a decent price, and without gobs of leather and sound insulation like the luxo brands.

You could build a M-Coupe-like hatchback........... :sly: I've been wishing Mazda build something like that for sometime.
