GM has to be thinking about doing a V8 model... In the name of the Sunbeam Tiger, I demand it!

I just read in Autoweek that you can get the Soltice with a 427 swap in it and they will blow it for you...now why in god's name would you want a 700hp Soltice? That just seems like over kill....but if you can fit a 427 BB that means you can fit a 572 in it as well.

Jesus tap-dancing Christ! They could market that as "suicide with wheels". 👍

It's sort of like asking why you'd need a 427 in a Cobra...

Could the Solstice be the next Cobra? With its ability to swallow huge swaps and wide tires, it seems pretty likely... :D

Holy mother of GOD! You use Jesus tap-dancing Christ too!?!?!?! Damn I thought I was the only one.

But that would be cool if the Soltice became the next Cobra.

If youre talking about a 427-swap from Lingenfelter (or any other GM-High Performance team) its actually a small-block V8... Pretty much the C5R 427 that they have been using for years in modified Camaros, Corvettes, and other hot rods and customs.

Either way, I wouldnt want to go big-block anyway... Too heavy and too slow to rev, not fun at the track.

If Ford decides to replace the GT with a Cobra Redux, it really wouldnt be a true Cobra other than the Shelby badges on the side... Being that they are both based on the huge platform, and would use many of the same parts between them...

A V8-powered Solstice, therefore, would be a more logical successor to the old Chevy-powered Cheetah racecars of the '60s, espically if Pontiac green-lights the proposed Solstice Coupe after 2007.

Oh, yeah... but I meant the spirit of the Cobra. You don't have to be Ford to cash in on the cachet. Take a convertible version, do the Mallett conversion (at the factory), fit it with silly wide wrinkle-walls, heck, lose the grilles and foglight on the front to make way for more engine-cooling, and paint some stripes on it...

That's bound to get a nostalgic racenut or two off his duff and down to the Pontiac dealerships... no matter how much they'd have to pay.

As a Miata rival, the Solstice doesn't strike me as much, but with potential like this, it's bound to attract an entirely different market segment from Mazda's little roadster.

Hold the Turbo and the Larger swapa for a mo . . . and let's go back to the Mallett w/ the LS2 .
You know they're pushing the Solstice roadster in Europe as we speak ? , well it's brain-damaged with the stock engine but 400bhp nicely complimented by 400 lbft , now you are talking something of sweetness and prestige . Give it a german manual transmission , slightly stiffer shocks and ime sorry but it looks tastefull and not ugly . It is so because the Solstice shape is not beefy but down-played , lightweight and v.practical in the competitive stakes . LOTS of Europeans would purchase this as it fits a niche between the 3s and 6s in the bimmer yardstcik . The Solstice at present is aimed at the TT and will lose miserably , this would kill and it's overall styling proportions are aesthetic , esp in Black . . .

The Mallett in Black, Lo-Prof, in Europe would redeem u SOBs (edit)

They will be selling a sister car to the Solstice in Europe at your local Vauxhaull and Opel dealers, baisicly replacements to the VX220 and Speedster that you folks love so much. Much of the design will be related to the Vauxhaull VX Lightning concept from a few years ago, which was then turned into the 2006 Saturn Sky, which is what the European market will recieve as their new models...

It will first sell with the 2.4L ECOTEC I4 with 171HP and the 5-speed Aisin manual transmission. The car's performance will be on par with the new MX-5 to begin with, but it has been rumored in the 'States for some time now that the Sky (aka VX220 and Speedster replacement) will also debut with an option 240HP Turbocharged version of the 2.4L I4.

But GM is tricky, and they occasionally surprise us all. If these different tuners are going to be stuffing V8s in the Solstice and Sky so easily, what exactly will stop them from using their own LS2 or another V8 probably sourced from the truck lineup?

We can only hope. It's entirely possible for GM to market an LS2 powered Solstice for "merely" $30,000 - $35,000. The upcoming LS2 powered GTO will cost around that much. It would definitely be a runaway ( ) hit with sports car enthusiasts.

Alright , mebbe i was slightly hasty in saying that you should tune the Mallett at all , ime sure the LS2 is sufficient transmission , it just seems to me that GM should be taking a more tuners line in Europe . Mallett would be easily able to cover all low-volume shipments for a European market but , instead GM will aim the sky & solstice at the roadster/speedster/tt market , whereas the solstice especially would benefit from going upmarket into the muscle domain TVR occupies ( where you would encounter the BMW Z e.g ) into smaller volume higher market more thoroughbred class of vehicle that would compete not in mass volume and japanese volume appeal but , head on on true Cobra ballsout tradfitions of the more superspeedster , higher markup , prestige for US automanufacturing , instead you'll do a GM vs Japan number that will come off tinny & crass .

Well, when C/D tested the Mallett Solstice in their latest issues, the test numbers were almost exactly the same as a Chevrolet Corvette Z51. 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, covers the qtr in 12.8 @ 120 MPH, and pulls 1.02g on the skidpad. Not bad for a havily modified Solstice

They say that the biggest problem with the car was an unimpressive break setup, a huge wheelspin problem (easily obtainable in the first three gears), and the short gearing mostly because it uses the same 5-speed unit and axles from the stcok car.

Mallett says they plan on changing some stuff, and you can option up your car with many extras under the hood. A Supercharged model is on the way, and if you can get your hands on an LS7, they would be happy to stick that under the hood as well.

Well all those problems are pretty understandable, I mean ya you are going to get insane wheel spin. But those numbers are mighty impressive for something that cost about 12 grand less then the Vette.
