I've just seen a commercial on television (North America) and it was for the 2007 Camry Sport Edition with 268 HP.

Does anyone know anything about this?
I found it very interesting to see this commercial since I never expected to see a Camry with so much power (I'm a former Camry owner too).

Any information is appreciated and any opinions are welcome.

Car and Driver's coverage of this vehicle indicated that it was a competent chassis, willing engine, and intuitive transmission held back by overzealous traction/stability control that cannot be turned off.

It is good to see that Toyota is not resting on it's laurels and trying to actively bring in more buyers, but the fact of the matter is that the camry has never been (and probably never will be) a genuine sport sedan. The Accord is on top on that area. To many buyers, it probably won't matter, though.

"Camry" and "Sport" should never be used together in the same sentance, and the SE (Sport Eddition) model has always been a joke on the Toyota Camry in my opinion. The Accord wins the Japanese sport sedan title, hands down, but if I'm buying one... I'm going with a Passat (let the VW-hater flame war begin).

The Camry isn't a sports sedan...it's just supposed to be a Car for the "Famry." :sly: (bad Engrish joke)

That's to be expected from Toyota these days.

Camry... Sport... It's like oil and water. They just don't mix. For that matter, it applies to all of Toyota. I think the last thing we need is a Camry (The most mundane, boring, average-joe-sixtooth sedan in the world) that tries to suck more gas. Leave that to the cars that are actually sporty.

Ahem, FWD V-6 powered cars with "decent" hp outputs are NOT Sport Sedans.

Sporty Sedans, Sportish Sedans, but not Sport.

The M5, in my mind, is a Sport Sedan, or an E55 AMG, or CTS-V, though they are technically called "Super Sedans" these days, but the base top of the line models of those lines, or a new 335i Sedan would fill the bill INFINITELY better than some FWD pretender.

I always thought SE stands for Special Edition.

Theyre making it look like the IS these days.

"Camry Sport Edition" is surely an oxymoron (yes I just wanted to use that word twice in the same week). A product of Toyota's no doubt wry sense of humour?

In Australia at least we have a more boring Toyota, known as the "Avalon", which I vote as the most boring car ever made, if not the ugliest (going by the world's ugliest car thread).

Witness the glory! Isn't she a head turner!

At least Toyota know now they've been rejected for being too dull (whitegoods on wheels as the Camry is known as in Australia) and they've tried pretty hard with the new "Aurion", perhaps the first recent Toyota sedan in Aus that may be able to legitimately get away with a sporting model. ;)

A sporty Camry? Well Toyota just boosted it's sales again in America, people will eat this car up.

We get the proper Avalon--this is Toyota's best saloon. And it's a better sport saloon than the Camry. The North American spec Avalon is actually quite good, I drove one and liked it. But there is two problems with either the Camry "sport" or the Avalon--no manual transmission option and no 6spd tiptronic auto. And the traction control can never be turned completely off. I'd still rather own an Infiniti. :sly:

I believe that Avalon James posted is our old Avalon with different face. Looks like the U.S. one is boring, Australian one is a "hit by a bus in the face" edition. New one is a lot nicer.

When I saw the new Camry for the first time, I declared that it was the ugliest new car of 2006......... but I'm afraid I've changed my mind. While it's not the best looking sedan, it's doesn't look too bad. Certainly better than the (minor)redesigned Accord. That was messed up. They kept the ugly front, while totally messing up the beautiful rear. :guilty:

As for the Sport Edition Camry, it doesn't bother me. Obviously, I get the impression that "Sport" is just straight line. Maybe they should call it the NSE Camry. You know, the NASCAR Sport Edition Camry? :sly: Yeah, while it will never be considered a proper sport sedan, I think "Sport Edition" name does indicate the "Sporty" or "Sportish" as Onikaze indicated.

Edit:

Our old Toyota Avalon.

Yep the boring Avalon, well soon it will be replaced by the Aurion which I think is the same car as the current US Avalon that JCE3000GT posted.

Toyota's Last Attempt at a "Sporty Camry":

Check out the competition grey wheels with the smoked headlights. Looks like she is ready to do some stoplight drags at the Hot Import Nights! Hell, maybe she wants to head to the local SCCA Event and run Showroom Stock!

I still laugh at the fact that it was actually compared with a Honda Accord EX, Altima 3.5 SE, and Jetta GLX VR6...

We still get similar "sporty" model,

2006 Camry Sportivo

Mmm those side skirts just make you want to run it around Nurburgring. :D

...So is the Camry anywhere close to the best-selling vehicle status in Australia (or I suppose anywhere in the world), or is that only in the United States?

Toyota is the best selling manufacture in Australia but Commodore out sells Camry, but Camry is one of the best sellers in Australia though.

Technically: The Celica is dead.

Until they bring back a RWD Celica, it will forever be that way, too.

The Celica split into two entities in 1986 -- the FWD Celica, and the RWD Celica. The first three generations of Celica carried the chassis code designation of "A," until the first FWD Celica appeared in 1986, and the "A" switched to "T." The 3rd-gen and 4th-gen Supras used the chassis code designation of "A." Coincidence? I think not. So really, you should be hoping for the return of the Supra. ;)

If Toyota isn't sport...what's the Celica?

A compact, lightweight sports coupe with very good handling that is outaccelerated by pretty much everything on the road, including minivans and SUVs.

Don't forget it's one of the only cars that I can think of that can be designated "factory rice"--I'm talking about the last generation. The mid-90's generation was by far the best looking of the Celics...but obviously the Celica Supra was the most fun...duh I wonder why. :sly:

toyota execs are too conservative. they havent green light anything kickass except for the previous gen mr2.

I like the 90's Celica GT4's, a AWD Turbocharged Celica along side Turbocharged MR2 and Turbocharged Supra..... Nice lineup
