The Supra was just a Celica that took on a life of it's own.

I also didn't care much for the last gen supra, I dug the older ones though, back when it still said "Celica Supra" in big letters with the louvered rear window ftw!

Toyota had some cool sports cars in their past. But since right around when they quit making sports cars, they have been unstoppable.

Aye. Concentrating on boring, sensible cars has helped Toyota become one of the industry's two most consistent performers, as far as profits/business go. Then again, the other carmaker in that pair concentrates on almost nothing but sportiness and the driving experience...BMW. :D

Here is my problem. Honda ups the ante with the Civic, people hate worldwide. I'm not a big Camry or Corolla fan (especially newer ones). But when Toyota hypes up the Camry, not as many people complain. What's up with that?

The Camry is about as dull as any other car out there. I will give respect in how the car is designed, because at least it doesn't look plain. It's actually styled better than the previous Camry. I got used to its looks a bit, and it's a nice car. The sort of "U" shaped grill reminds me of the Renault Laguna from the late 1990s. It is a nice car for what it is. I'd probably would want a Mazdaspeed 6 instead. You know, something a little more edgy and capable.

This Camry Sport however... out of 100%, this is good to go for a 78% approval rating.

I'm not sure what you mean...what is it that people are complaining about with the Civic that you think they should be complaining about here....?

JohnBM's post about...

ROFLMAO.

I see it quite the other way around.
For example, in this thread, Toyota is getting nothing but bad grades and in general all I see are people knocking Toyota while boasting Honda and Nissan.

What a strange world where we can all see it so differently. :boggled:

I see the new Camry as a positive thing.
Not going to buy one or anything but...
A Camry is a good, sensable, reliable, family sedan. Adding HP to that is nothing but good for those family-drivers that want just a bit more power for entering that highway or jumping off the light. :mischievous:

In any case, those are just my thoughts. :P
Don't take it for too much though, I'm a Toyota fan who likes most of their cars (although I'm not too hot on the styling of the newer cars).

Just one thing though...
The Celica getting beat by "most" suv's and minivans?
Consistant 1/4 mile times under 16 seconds, 180hp and 2,500lbs... I would love to see more minivans like that (especially for the low 20,000-some dollar price of the 2000-2005 Celica GT-S). 👍

That's only the GT-S, and not the 140hp 16.5-second GT... :sly:

Even the GT-S's acceleration is about on-par with an average family/compact-lux sedan.

That may be (not my goal to argue about it)...
(although I would be interested to hear which 20k compact luxs run mid-15s) :sly:

16.5 off a 140hp engine isn't bad. 👍
(unless you're serious about it :mischievous:  )

That's the thing, though -- the Celica used to be a sports car, and it looks like one...but it's just a slick-looking sports compact, which is why it's so cheap.

Toyota doesn't need the Celica to be a sports compact, especially with the Supra gone. The Celica should be more of a sports car, leaving the Corolla to be a sports compact.

Why can't Celica and Supra be like Z and skyline?

Omnis
Why can't Celica and Supra be like Z and skyline?

...Because Toyota doesnt have the stones to build two RWD coupes and agressively price and equip them against cars like the 350Z, Mustang, and upcomming Camaro...

I know I didn't say this, but I would NEVER say that the Celica could beat any minivans or SUVs. You must be mad, mate!

Regarding the Camry...
I really haven't taken a liking to the new style. :indiff:
Maybe in time but I don't know.

As for Toyota putting stronger engines in cars. 👍
But for the sake of letting you all in on a special secret...
:whisper: "S" is for Style any time Toyota uses it. ;)

(Proud owner of Corolla S) :P
