Sorry, Sniffs, but it's simpler than that. Americans think hatchback = cheap because they're small and don't have big, torquey engines. They also dislike many of them simply because they didn't come from Detroit.

The reason why we're seeing a resurgence of hatchback popularity in this country today is because people are flocking to smaller, more-fuel-efficient, and "greener" cars due to the whole global warming scare and our "exorbitant" gas prices.
 
Americans suck if they assume hatchback = cheap. Obviously they've never been in a VW or the new C30.
 
Actually, Golfs are probably the most-commonly-accepted hatchbacks in this country. It's surprising how many VWs you'll find in rural, "american-made or nothing" areas.

Of course, buyers here will opt for the VR6 versions whenever possible, and would rather drive a Passat or Jetta than a Golf.
