That Port Vale vs Mk Dons result depresses me. I remember sitting in the stands thinking we would at least get a replay... But no. We were clos, but no. :(

VTiD VTiD!

Some unbelievable shocks yesterday, watched it enfold on Twitter on my phone in work during my break, no shocks today though, West Ham beat Bristol City, Villa beat Bournemouth and Arsenal are 2-0 up away to Brighton at half time....

Brighton 2-3 Arsenal, cracking cup tie!!

Well that was scary, score line flattered Brighton a bit. Hopefully that's the last we've seen of Flamini.

If it's to do with this thread then it has to be to do with the FA Cup. Guildford and Nuneaton are throwing me somewhat. Out of those teams I can honestly only remember Sheffield Wednesday's cup performances; 1-0 up against Man City before losing 2-1.

Is it something to do with the team who eliminated the teams listed being eliminated by a lower ranked team? i.e. - Sheff Wed were knocked out by a Premiership team, Man City, but that Premiership team were knocked out by a Championship team.

Arsenal and West Ham keep the Prem's reputation nearly intact.
Also Villa scored goals. The magic of the FA Cup...

Blackpool, Everton and Hull being taken off the list due to today's games is really throwing me.

One more game to come with Rochdale v Stoke tonight with the fifth round draw before...

Here is the full fifth round draw:

Crystal Palace v Liverpool or Bolton Wanderers
Arsenal v Middlesbrough
Aston Villa v Leicester City
West Brom v West Ham
Bradford City v Sunderland or Fulham
Blackburn Rovers v Rochdale or Stoke City
Derby County v Reading
Preston NE or Sheffield Utd v Cambridge Utd or Manchester Utd

Palace v Liverpool and Arsenal v Middlesbrough are the 2 to watch there in my opinion. Supposing United get past Cambridge we will have another lower league opposition (both Preston and Sheff Utd are in League 1).

Never knocked out by a lower league team?

Just plucked out a random team to follow their progression.

Exeter were knocked out by Warrington. Warrington were knocked out by Gateshead. Gateshead were knocked out by West Brom. West Brom beat Birmingham and are still in the cup.

I don't see why Exeter are listed. They were knocked out by lower league, and in fact non-league, opposition but that isn't true for other teams. They were knocked out failing to score a goal but that also isn't true for other teams.

And this list will taper out to one team. And it is also to do with the team who knocked them out... that team will go on and so will the others until... uh.. the winning 'losers' of some kind?

No idea.

I've just been and checked my list and noticed you've randomly picked one of two I made an error on  I forgot West Brom and Reading's 4th round results. Well it WAS 2am.

The list has been amended now. But I think you're pretty much there.

It's not become much clearer. Nuneaton didn't even make it to round one proper! Their progression went Hemel Hempstead > Bury > Luton > Cambridge. Cambridge aren't on the list.

I really don't know. All of your listed teams are in contention for... being eliminated by significantly lesser opposition? Well, that cannot be true because Wednesday are there.

And what did Leeds do last year? They were eliminated early on. Leeds > Rochdale > Sheffield Wednesday > Charlton > Sheffield United > Hull

So... all of your listed teams are in contention for being the first team on the road to the losing finalist? Edit: Ack, no. That's impossible to know at this time.

That's because Cambridge are still in the cup (for now).

Should they lose to Manchester United, Nuneaton will remain on the list, but Notts County would be taken off it.
If they beat Manchester United, the opposite will apply...

I'll give another clue then.

For 2014-15 it'll be just one of those teams eventually.
For 2013-14 it was Leeds United.
For 2012-13 it was... Causeway United.

Nnnnope - we got dunked out 2-1 by Manchester City first go, for example.

In 2011-12 it was Westfields. For 2010-11 it was Hillingdon Borough, but in 2009-10 it was Hull City.

I did think you had it with:
Exeter were knocked out by Warrington. Warrington were knocked out by Gateshead. Gateshead were knocked out by West Brom
Only Exeter were in by mistake. D'oh.

Is it that they went out at the same round in the Fa cup as the league cup? For example; Leeds went out third round in the FA Cup and the League Cup?

With That extra information, ill add that they all went out in the third round too.

No - non league teams like Nuneaton and Guildford don't even get into the league cup.

Oh. Yeah. Didn't think.about that. So is it that they all got knocked out in the third round?

Heavens no. Not only are there too few teams for that but I couldn't remove teams from the list, the majority of them didn't get knocked out in round 3 anyway - Guildford were Qualifying Extra-Preliminary, Hereford were Qualifying 1, Oxford City were Qualifying 2, Nuneaton were Qualifying 4, Coventry, Notts County, Leyton Orient and Carlisle all went in round 1 - and there couldn't only be one left at the end of the Cup.

Of the past "winners" of this, Westfield and Hillingdon both were knocked out in Qualifying Extra-Preliminary.

@Liquid was very nearly there with the quote I posted. Pick a couple of teams and see who beat them...

@Famine Trying to work out this criterion is mightly difficult. All of these teams have been knocked out by teams who have also been knocked out but why those knocker outers who are now knocked out (Man City for example) aren't on the list, or why others at all aren't there, skips me.

So let's do the research:

Brentford > Brighton & Hove Albion > Arsenal
Burnley > Tottenham Hotspur > Leicester City
Carlisle United > Peterborough United > Colchester United > Cardiff City > Reading
Coventry City > Worcester City > Scunthorpe United > Chesterfield > Derby County
Ipswich Town > Southampton > Crystal Palace
Leeds United > Sunderland > Sunderland/Fulham still to be replayed
Leyton Orient > Oldham Athletic > Doncaster Rovers > Bristol City > West Ham United
Norwich City > Preston North End > Sheffield United/Preston North End still to be replayed
Nottingham Forest > Rochdale > Stoke City
Notts County > Accrington Stanley > Yeovil Town > Manchester United > Cambridge United/Manchester United still to be replayed
Queen's Park Rangers > Sheffield United > Sheffield United/Preston North End still to be replayed
Rotherham United > Bournemouth > Aston Villa
Sheffield Wednesday > Manchester City > Middlesborough
Watford > Chelsea > Bradford City
Wigan Athletic > Bolton Wanderers > Bolton Wanderers/Liverpool still to be replayed
Wolverhampton Wanderers > Fulham > Fulham/Sunderland is still to be replayed

Guildford City
Hereford United
Nuneaton Town
Oxford City

Before looking into these non-league teams' results I noticed that none of the teams who knocked out those listed went on to win another game. Each winner has subsequently been knocked out.

So... the winner of this is the team which started the longest 'no winners staying on' policy? Or the lowest/highest ranked team to do so?
