That happened way too fast for him to have a chance to avoid it. He probably thought he was clear high, until the other car shot up the track right in front of him. Slow motion replays really don't do any justice for these accidents. He had no time to react.

Massive collision on the front stretch after a car stalled on the Grid.

The pole-sitter didn't get moving when the green lights turned on for the start, and a driver smashed hard into him. There was debris all over the frontstretch and both cars were basically obliterated.
