Did this really happen?

*To McLaren *

I find your lack of straight line speed disturbing.

Grosjean was dealt a harsh blow, as his only other Sector 3 time that session involved him spinning off, no wonder he went faster. They even showed the clip on the broadcast, he lifted off well before the corner and didn't go full throttle until way past Giovanazzi's crashed car.

Aren't you supposed to slow WAYYYYYYYY down during double waved yellows? Both Grosjean and Palmer didn't. It is double standards so I think it is harsh.

It's not a double standard it's actually doing their job unlike the call on Rosberg last year. Grosjean wasn't slow enough to stop, that is the rule for double yellows. Since he was still going too fast, even if it was 45kph. What Grosjean probably thought was if he could demonstrate that he was significantly slower between one lap to the other, he'd be fine. That's not the case never was the case, and it's why stewards need to have a consensus round to round so drivers don't get the wrong idea like Grosjean had. Grosjean was wrong though and thus penalty was right.

Ok when Hülkenberg gets the Renault on #7 and Palmer is #18 @prisonermonkeys probably has a point, I still think "pay drivers" aren't necessarily bad and Palmer is a nice guy - but perhaps too slow..

I also really like Stroll and #10 is definitely good going, the Williams seem kinda strong anyway.

You do realize that many people had their laps ruined by the crash of Giovanazzi. Which as I said in respect to Grosjean and his penalty is probably why they didn't want to slow down to a pace that would allow them to stop if needed. Rather just go through slower than the previous lap in hopes of being able to put in a final lap, but that wasn't so. If you simply look at the grid list for tomorrow cause you were unable to watch the actual event or read about it, then you only know the stats and not the story.

Ocon was also stopped from a better lap due to the wreck as well. Just so people don't get the idea that Ocon in his first full season is worse than Perez. If Giovanazzi didn't wreck and those were the results I'd only understand why one of those guys is down the far and it'd be Verstappen.

And that's the point. Different Stewards -> Different ruling. And that must not happen in a sport with that much money involved. Neither Palmer, nor Grosjean or Rosberg last year were prepared to stop. But as long as there is room for interpretation of a rule, there will be different rulings (and therefor double standards). The best solution I've heard so far: When you pass double yellow flags in Quali, the lap will not be counted. This leaves no room for interpretation for the Stewards and the drivers don't need to argue in the way Grosjean does now.

It's not a double standard though, it's one steward group doing the right call and the other (last year) not. If it had been the same group in both situations then it'd be a double standard

That call by the stewards last year played a big part in WDC outcome, hard to believe they let Nico Rosberg get away with it. IIRC he lost about a tenth and had 4KPH less minimum speed in the corner, setting probably the fastest middle sector in F1 history at that track while under double yellows and only purple sector on his lap. His the guy with the WDC to look up to for all drivers and that was deemed significant reduction in speed so more than 10 times slower than that in faster cars this year, I can see why Romain will feel aggrieved by decision.

New rules for the safety car in the wet this year. They will have standing starts when the safety car goes into the pits. I really hope this shakes thing up considering it's most likely going to be an all wet race tomorrow.

I wonder how many drivers will remember to drive over their grid slot on the safety car laps? It defeats the point if everyone stays on the racing line so you have one half of the grid on an Intermediate surface while the other is puddles.

Up the the teams to remind them I'd say. That's what the radio is for.

Anyway I've been watching VLN 2 this morning. Anything interesting happen in qualifying in China?

Many would claim that is why a call wasn't made because it would have been in the same realm as Grosjean taking out key cars in 2012 Belgian GP and getting banned. Putting the championship in a guess disrepute like state or ruining the show.

Yeah Giovanazzi turned his Sauber into wrecked mess that looks to be a sail boat (minus the sail) for tomorrow's rain storm. Best Quali strategy I've seen in years in getting himself a leg up on the competition.

I think they bottled it. It seemed as clear cut penalty case as one could be which surprised me when didn't give penalty, makes their other decisions look incorrect. I think todays decision is correct but will look extremely harsh compared to last year.

Had a look back again at Nico's lap and given it's a street circuit with tight corners, to carry similar minimum speed as 2015 pole lap while in worse conditions to me is not a significant reduction in speed going into a blind short left hand corner, FIA did however think it was enough. IMO even under single yellows it should have been a penalty let alone under double yellows where you should be prepared to stop. If something / someone happened to be there and he got hurt or hurt someone, I'm confident FIA would say it was drivers fault for not slowing down sufficiently for double yellows and even also for a single yellow.

They adjusted that rule after Hungary 2016 to make it more harsh. They didn't penalise Hulkenberg in Austria for the same thing, but then nobody cared. Now a double yellow is basically a red flag, minus having to go to the pits, which means you have to slow way, WAY down to not get a penalty.

So, do we have a forecast for tomorrow regarding the smog situation?
It baffles my mind smog can be a reason for helicopters not being able to fly, crazy.

My phone says sunny / cloudy for tomorrow in Shanghai, but that obviously doesn't say anything about smog...

Fake edit: says rainy, 15 degree Celsius now :odd:

I sure wouldn't want to try flying in that. Beijing's smog can get so bad that it actually exceeds the usual scales for measuring such things.

Woah! That looks seriously bad, way worse than I could have imagined. China really don't care, huh. :(

Uh yeah, this is a pretty well known fact of life. I'm more surprised that a person doesn't know China is the most smog riddled nation in the world. Hell during the Beijing games athletes were warned and had precautions due to the amount of pollution in the Chinese air.

Not sure Sauber appreciated the price tag of that strategy. :) Esp. if the shell had to be switched.
