So with the news that Porsche is leaving LMP1 and jumping to Formula E...how much longer before we get teams in F1 like McLaren, Ferrari, etc, jumping to it as well? Surely these large corporations, McLaren especially, don't want to continue dropping money into a pit like F1 and get poor returns, and even poorer cars.

Basically, how long before Formula E becomes the defacto motorsports discipline?
 
When they double the power and remove the treads from the tires. And then use normal circuits instead of this street track gimmick "to bring it closer to the fans". Let the fans on the track, do what IMSA does before races where anyone can walk up pit lane and the cars and drivers are out on display. That's what you do. Don't change the racing for some media schtick.

When it stops being a joke. Its a joke right now. "Fanboost", horrible street circuits, treaded street tires and cars that are slower than mayonnaise.
 
Not surprised, and not shaken. GTE PRO is getting bigger and although P2 is just spec-Oreca for now, it's picking up across the globe. LMP1 has been in the stinker ever since the ACO tried to woo Peugeot

They aren't that slow honestly, they have almost 300HP. That's a little more than Formula 3. It's the treaded tires that slow them down so give them slick tires and normal circuits to stretch their legs and that alone might make a huge difference.
 
I'm about confident now that Toyota will soon join in departing. As much as a easy win would be to get now with simply priviteers who have no chance instead of a full fledged Manufacterer, it would be too hollow a victory nd wouldn't really be a accomplishment in anyway.

If Toyota does not quit, considering their commitment to remain in WEC, and a "Toyota vs privateers" situation occurs, Toyota will still mess up in Le Mans and it will be a privateer victory and podium.

But who are these unnamed LMP1 privateers that we keep hearing about? Not saying they're not real, but who has openly spoken about a program next year? Rebellion aren't, they are observing the situation and then may or may not enter LMP1 in 2019. There hasn't been any news of the supposed Ginetta either since the initial article about it. Oreca is going to produce one, but that one isn't coming until 2019 potentially as they observe interest.

At any rate, the fact that LMP1H is dying just means that it's the end of the WEC's hybrid era yes. GTE is still a world championship with BMW entering next year and potentially another the year after that. LMP2 is also rather healthy globally despite being spec Oreca (:sly:).


If worst comes to worst, they could just have GTE get a shot at overall victory. :sly:

Ginetta's wind tunnel work are showing progress.

Wow, that is not a rare situation, isn't it? I mean, that's exactly what happened in the last decade. A lot of manufacturers in the top clas in the late 90's. All the manufacturers leave the championship, only Audi stays and besides some competition with Pescarolo, Audi manages to win almost every LeMans race.

I was going to say that. @RACECAR says that Toyota's first win being a no-contest against other manufacturers would be a hollow one.

This. Why is this so hard for Formula E to do? Likewise, F1 could benefit from doing this now that old ass has been unseated.

And yet it actually produces great racing and is far more Relevent to Electric powertrains then F1 pretends to be (Not to mention its continuing to grow). I'd hardly call that a "Joke" (apart from the Fanboost, which is just a godawful "Gimmick" designed for fan interaction)
 
Where does Porsche's exit leave LMP1 in relation to WEC / Le Mans? Isn't there a requirement for at least two manufacturer teams?

It is positively harmful to electric power take up. It reinforces one of the biggest consumer doubts. Range Anxiety.

Given their support for the WEC since 2012 I'd give them a pass on a win like that. Every Audi win was just like that until Peugeot turned up. They did their best to create some competition with the Bentley and privateer entries but they were still gimmes never the less.
 
Hopefully GTE is even still a thing in ten years time. If even Corvette and Ford switch to formula E. .

I think a really compelling sales pitch would have to be made to Ford or GM for that to happen.

Also , DPIs should be able to race in Europe , or at least Le Mans imo then I wouldn't care about the whole crisis as the privateer ish teams that run them cars probably wouldn't switch to Formula E , and we would still have really cool prototypes , so win win.

With the inevitable announcement of Porsche quitting, if Toyota decides to follow suit, then the death of WEC's hybrid era will serve as a massive embarrassment to the FIA in pushing greener technologies in racing.

There's no point trying to push through more efficient hybrid tech that manufacturers want in motorsport if huge development costs are preventing said manufacturers from joining.

That would require the FIA and ACO to pull a Fonz.

5 years trying to win, only one year they werent competitive, and in those 4 years they suffer amazing catastrophes. Biggest case of bad luck in motorsport history?
