So... Russia have qualified for Euro 2020 (2nd in Group I) with Scotland finishing 3rd (and now in the play-offs)...

Shouldn't Russia now be disqualified from Euro 2020 as well, and Scotland promoted to 2nd (and thus automatic qualification for Euro 2020)?!
 
Yes, that's right, I made a 2022 FIFA World Cup thread two months ago because I'm a nerd :D I had it hidden from view because only a handful of games had been played, and they only really affected Australian and Japanese GTP members (and not a great deal).

I guess now's the time to unhide it :lol:

On a more serious note, it is frankly absurd that Russia can be banned from the World Cup in 2022 but not Euro 2020... even if Scotland were not to inherit their qualifying slot.

So it seems that there's a ludicrous answer to this.

The ban applies to "major events", which ultimately means "world events". Euro 2020 is a regional ranking tournament, and UEFA is not classed as a "major" (or "world") event organiser.

Russia will also be allowed to qualify for Qatar 2022, in the regional ranking tournament (UEFA qualifiers), but should it qualify it cannot participate - but a team of proven clean Russian players may compete under a neutral flag in Russia's place. I've listed it as eliminated as of, and due to, the WADA ban, but it'll still appear in the UEFA qualifier post when the draw is made.

It is a shame their matches won't count towards qualification (because on merit alone they'd probably miss dramatically), but would this be a good measuring stick for them to see if they can even keep up? Just going on a rough count I'd say 3 or 4 wins would be a success (I would predict losses vs Ireland, Portugal and Serbia, and they'd be competitive in the matches between Luxembourg and Azerbaijan) .

They won all three games in the group stage (including beating Saudi Arabia 2-0, which is nonsense), then beat Iraq, South Korea (also nonsense), UAE - who'd knocked out Australia - 4-0, and then stuck Japan 3-1 in the final. And that was the only goal they conceded in the entire tournament.

Their unmeteoric* rise has more than a whiff of brown envelope about it. As does the fact they're hosting the World Cup, in a bunch of stadiums literally built by slaves.

I always consider a litmus test for any legitimate player for a country to be the player knowing the national anthem of said country. I wonder how many would qualify here?
 
I want Wales to qualify for a World Cup in my lifetime and we can but... I'd rather not qualify for one hosted by Qatar. Nor the one in China which you absolutely know is what FIFA are rigging towards.

In all honesty and fairness, England is well overdue the chance to host a tournament. But it won't.

Yeah, it's a no-contest. Gifting a consolation goal to minnows is embarrassing, but missing a closing minutes sitter that sees you lose the match is haunting.
 
How bad is group A that Qatar has 2 wins? Is the group truly that atrocious or is Qatar just decent?
