Let me pose a thought experiment.

If the Democratic candidate had shot someone on fifth avenue on live TV, would you still have voted for them to stop Trump?
You mean would the Democrats have been spineless enough to do that? I can't imagine the current version of the party being that blinded.

No. I mean, if the candidate running against Trump did some obviously unconscionable thing like murder a child, but were otherwise a centrist Dem in every other respect, would you be willing to vote for them in order to prevent Trump from becoming president?

It should tell you more about how utterly contemptible a person Trump is than it does about me that I'd still strongly consider voting for the Dem.

But him murdering by proxy a million people is acceptable.
It's not acceptable. That's why I didn't vote for him.
This is simply the trolley problem. Neither scenario is desirable but one is decidedly better than the other.
I've never favored the utilitarian solution to the trolley problem, and it's certainly not the only valid answer.

I wouldn't push an overweight person off a bridge to stop a runaway train, nor would I kill someone so their organs could save transplant patients. And I suspect you wouldn't either.

You're not responsible for everything someone you vote for does or stands for. You're responsible for what you say with your vote. You cannot get particularly nuanced with that voice.

The analogy only goes so far. Your vote is not where the chain of events has to end. You could vote for the better choice and then go on to stand against any bad decisions that come later. This should at least increase the chances of reaching a good outcome for everyone.

I would if it were Trump she'd shot.
Normally I wouldn't agree with this type of comment (edit: even if in jest) but with the most recent news of Trump claiming they're taking over Gaza and owning it I think it's appropriate in this case.

Protesting an immoral act would not absolve me of knowingly giving them the power to do that act in the first place. Especially if the protest doesn't work.

Giving someone a gun and urging them not to shoot is... questionable. If you personally wouldn't feel guilty if they shot someone, more power to you I guess.

It's much less questionable when there is someone else in the room who is undoubtedly looking to kill with the gun. There is an element of risk that can't be eliminated here, but there is a chance to lower the risk of a bad outcome.

Trolley problem. I'm going full utilitarian on this one. The needs of the many outweigh those of the Trump.

Wake up this morning and see BBC's article on Trump stating Palestinians "don't have the right to return to Gaza"... What is this guy's problem? Why is he focusing on other countries and not purely on the USA, the country he is actually president of? Is his new motto "Make America Hated Again"? It seems like it must be because he's definitely agitating a lot of other nations.

He has no tact. That’s the problem. USA Presidents(this includes everyone on that president’s team) have always been involved in other countries business and it’s like their own home country is neglected. With Trump, this is turned up to 11 to the eleventh power due to his lack of a brain.

When the next President is in office it’ll still be business as usual, but at least there will be some sweet talking while _____(insert any country) and the USA people are screwed.

To be fair, he focuses on the US in that he repeats whatever he is told and what will make him better off. He doesn't care about any of his base other than the people who will give him money.

"They've got money for the poor but they can't feed the war"- the GOP, probably.

He doesn't care about any of his base other than the people who will give him money.
I mean, this has been the GOP modus operandi in a nutshell. From the Reagan era until Trump, the party predominantly championed supply-side economics, tax cuts for the rich, deregulation, etc, under the guise the new wealth would trickle down to the masses, and this was believable because economic conditions were more favorable under Reagan (though actually in spite of Reagan's presidency, instead speaking to its cyclical nature). Now, given the financial crisis, Occupy movement, and resulting populist political climate, this rhetoric is unpopular, and it would be impossible to win an election on this alone. But the economic doctrine is still unchanged, because 1. the party is just as beholden to corporate interests as same types of people are donating to the GOP today versus the Reagan era and 2. class collaborationism and state corporatism facilitates right wing populism fascism and doesn't threaten the well being of the elite class. So instead, it's "divide and conquer" in full swing: erode class consciousness by making the working man scapegoat largely economic anxieties at trans people, hispanic immigrants, wokeness, "globalist" figureheads like Soros and Klaus Schwab, etc. And they never have to talk about their actual economic agenda: the confines of discourse around the economy policy consists of "owning the libs" when they are in charge for global phenomena like post-COVID supply chain woes and inflation, or co-opting populist or labor rhetoric ONLY to acknowledge the problems but not the solution.

The GOP's primary interest is still the enriching the donor class, and it making everything about WOKE is just a means to this end.

Can you imagine if Tupac was still around? He's drop some amazing lyrics based on the state of the world right now.
ChatGPT gave me this:

"Still Cryin’"
(Inspired by Tupac Shakur)

(Hook – Female Vocalist)

Still cryin’, still tryin’—will we ever see the light?
Another mother lost a child, another war we gotta fight.
Still prayin’, still waitin’—but the world just stays the same.
They say hope is in tomorrow, but today we feel the pain.

(Verse 1 – Tupac Flow)
I see the world through a shattered lens, cracked in a million ways,
Babies starvin’ in the street while billionaires gettin’ paid.
Politicians lie, play the puppet to the game,
Talkin’ ‘bout change, but we still bleed the same.

AI takin’ jobs, they replaced the factory man,
Now he beggin’ on the block, just a bottle in his hand.
They trackin’ what we say, got our minds in a cage,
Social media controlin’ how we love and how we rage.

They kill us on the cam, and the pigs still walk,
The system ain’t broken—man, it’s workin’ how they thought.
Got us fightin’ each other, left, right, black, white,
But the enemy’s above, countin’ money outta sight.

(Hook – Female Vocalist)
Still cryin’, still tryin’—will we ever see the light?
Another mother lost a child, another war we gotta fight.
Still prayin’, still waitin’—but the world just stays the same.
They say hope is in tomorrow, but today we feel the pain.

(Verse 2 – Tupac Flow)
Another school shot up, another protest shut,
Another truth covered up, now they tellin’ us what?
That we free? Nah, we just slaves with some new kinda chains,
Gotta hustle, gotta struggle just to eat, it's insane.

Politicians start wars, send the poor to the front,
While they kids in the Hamptons, sippin’ wine, rollin’ blunts.
The news full of hate, just to keep us all blind,
While the Earth burnin’ up and the oceans in decline.

They don’t wanna hear the truth, they just drown it in noise,
While the people in the ghetto gotta fight to find joy.
But I still got a dream, see my seeds in the sun,
Where the system don’t own us, and the battle is won.

(Outro – Tupac Talking)
Man, I ain't tryna preach, I'm just speakin' what's real.
We still tryna rise, but they keep us concealed.
Keep ya head up, young king, young queen,
The fight ain't over till we live our dreams.

I think we might need to prevent ChatGPT from getting a music label.
