I'm really enjoying the race so far, although I am surprised the 908 HDi's... aka the 'Black Crows', aren't doing as well as expected... and the whole LMP2 class is getting shown up by the majority of GT1 cars! Even the GT2 #97 Risi Competizione's Ferrari F430 is beating all but the Binnie Motorsports' Lola B05/42 LMP2 car... and is only four laps behind them!

Of course a lot can happen over 150 laps and 11 hours. :)

Here is the 12 Hour Report for those interested.

I got the race on SPEED Channel here and the sun is starting to come up at Le Mans. It's approaching 6 am there as I write this post.

Well, the Audis are still 1-2 in LMP1, and the Aston Martin Double-0 cars are 1-2 in GT1 with the #63 Corvette third. Can the Aston Martin cars finally kill of the demonic gremlins that have plagued them in the past and finally finish first in class? We shall soon see...

I also just saw a little something about Lola developing a chassis that'll be used for the Le Mans prototypes in time for the 2010 race. Anyone else hear anything about it?

I'm a bit dissapointed that the Peugeots aren't doing so well. I was hoping for an upset, but with about ten hours left, my hopes are fading as the sun rises in France. Prescarlo is hovering around in there as well like the vultures they usually are, so either Audi or Peugeot screws up, and they'll take advantage of it.

...The C6.R/DBR9 race is getting closer and closer, and it may turn out rather close by the end of the race. Last check had the Corvette less than a lap behind the lead Astons, although pit schedules messed that up further. If they can close the gap, it would certainly be an upset. Although, one can always hope for the classic British electronic failure at some point...

I also hear (according to Radio LeMans) that Team Risi is pretty much dominating GT2 with the F430GT, which is a good run for the American boys again. There were hopes for Panoz to do well, but I think last check had them seven or more laps behind.

One can only hope for a Peugeot upset, and furthermore, for the Corvettes to come back...

Theyre in the garage now. Hopefully this will make the GT2 category a bit more competitive.

#007 Aston had a front splitter problem, and the #63 Vette just passed. Furthermore, it sounds as though the #009 is just a few seconds ahead of the #63.

Hooray!

EDIT: There is a bit of confusion going on at the moment, as it sounds as though the Corvette has taken second away from the #007, I keep hearing about a gear issue as well. Problem is, I don't know if it is for the Vette or the Aston...

It has been floating a bit, so I'm uncertain. When I first started listening after getting back from work (about 10:30 PM EST), the Corvette had cut the lead down to about 3/4 of a lap before heading into the pits.

...I keep crossing my fingers, but given that I'm going to bed shortly, I won't likely know who won until 10:30 or later in the morning (I think the race ends at 8 or 9 AM here).

I think the 009 is actually a lap ahead of the 63.
The official time sheet shows both Aston's being 1-2 laps ahead, and turning laps 1.5-2 seconds faster then the #63 Corvette:

Code:
[b]R Car Team Driver Lap Behind Last-Lap Best-Lap Stops[/b]

7 009 A Martin TURNER 224 21 Laps 3:50.972 3:49.664 Run 18

8 007 A Martin HERBERT 224 2.164 3:52.019 3:48.969 Run 20

9 63 Corvette O'CONNELL 222 23 Laps 3:54.028 3:50.929 Run 19

I have a big post to make, but first...

THE #2 AUDI CRASHED!!!

Wow! The order is going to shift like HELL now. On top of that, Tom Kristensen put on one hell of a drive. To get out there and drive as hard as Kristensen did, he deserves mad love for his efforts. The wheel was off on the Audi R10 TDI. Now it's the #1 Audi by a few laps over the Peugeots. Could there possibly still be an upset abound in LMP1?

Stay tuned. My little report on Le Mans is coming up in my next post.

Also GT2 leading #97 Risi Competizione is cooked! :(

Terrible luck, as they were absolutely dominating their class as well as the LMP2 class! I especially feel bad for Mika Salo.

Hi, everyone! Thanks for posting up this thread. I have a lot more to post, but I'll only offer some minor comments about the race. Expect a bigger post in the future.

It's now officially 8 hours left until we decide the class champions. For the most part, I think the Audi vs. Peugeot match may not be the blow-for-blow fist fight people invested their stock in, but the Peugeots are showing great endurance and not backing out. When it seemed like Peugeot would be the flag-bearers for France, Pescarolo has done pretty well. I love Le Mans for all the action and the cars and the fans who love their racing. This is just some great racing. I'm challenging myself to try to stay awake to see as much of the race as possible.

Here are some elements I'm willing to share right now:

--- Style! ---
Let's talk about some of the "Best Dressed" and "Worst Dressed" cars in this year's race.

* CARS
* Dorsey S. on Speed Channel commented that the Peugeots look like F1 cars with a body over them. They are awesome machines. The small cockpit likely isn't going to do the claustrophic any favors. They still remain pretty competitive. If I designed the car, I'd probably design the car to be a center-cockpit car like Formula One cars or the McLaren F1 machines.

* I remembered looking on GTPlanet for info regarding a beautiful Italian car known as the Lavaggi LS1. Despite this car's name, there is no lineage to Chevrolet as this car is powered by a (set me straight if I'm wrong) a Ford V8. I have a picture of this car saved on my computer. The car I'm used to raced in the Le Mans series. The car in question has red and white colors. Their website is < http://www.lavaggi.org >. I like the website's song having been there twice. It is a smoothly-designed prototype race car. Beautiful. Or as Italians would say, bellissima.

* The Ferrari F430 GT is a beautiful machine. I loved the 360 Modena to death. While I still love the 360 Modena, the F430 is a lovely piece of Italian craftsmanship. It's my new love. More powerful and faster. Absolute beauty. And as with most Ferraris, enjoy the engine noise.

* The Pescarolo Judd is slick, yet possesses some edgy design. I've been reading that the Pescarolos were using the cars from Courage until they've taken one and modified it so much that it's its own car. Their car is slick. More like something I'd want to race if I were "test driving" an LMP.

* The Zytek models look absolutely amazing.

* I forgot what the Pilbeams of a few years ago looked like. But the Pilbeam model racing in this event looks much better than the older Pilbeams I remember. It is a wonderful machine.

PAINTSCHEMES
* I love these Zyteks. They are beautiful racing machines. The #32 Gulf Zytek in LMP2 is reminiscent of some of the past Gulf-colored machines of racing past. Past meets present in beautiful form. The Those Zyteks are lovely machines. One of my favorites is the beautifully blue #33 Pescarolo Judd. It's blue with some white and yellow accents. Quite handsome race car.

* The #78 AF Corse Red Bull Ferrari F430 GT is beautifully blue. I also like red for cars. And none lovlier than red like at the #97 Risi Competizione F430 GT. You XBOX360 Forza fans are probably enjoying life racing the F430GT in that game. While I'm not very

* Did I mention that I love blue? The #18 X-Markets Lavaggi LS1 is painted beautifully in blue. The car itself is beautiful. Painting it up nicely makes it even sweeter. Hats off to the crew who made this design.

* The #40 car is black and blue with white accents. That Lola looks great.

* I extremely dig the colorful scheme of the #80 Flying Lizard Porsche 997 GT3 RSR. I'm very okay with the simple silver and red colors of the normal colors, but the combination of silver, orange, red, yellow, violet, blue, and green look absolutely amazing. Give a house call to Troy Lee Designs. Great job, mate!

* The C5-R may not be top-of-the-line these days, but the #73 Luc Alphand Aventures Chevrolet C5-R looks amazing. Its combination of blue and yellow with white accents looks quite amazing.

* The Pescarolo boys in LMP1 have another wonderful paintscheme. The Playstation colors all come together beautifully in- you guessed it- blue. I'm glad seeing the Playstation and Gran Turismo colors. I'd like to see maybe a few more real teams with a either PlayStation or Gran Turismo colors, speaking as a fan of Gran Turismo. The ultimate longshot is that Risi Competizione comes out with a GT5 livery. You know, since GTHD and GT5 will presumably feature Ferrari. And why Risi? They're my hometown's best team, damn it! ;-)

* I noticed in a camera close-up that the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP has a good number of sections with unpainted carbon fiber. Paint adds a few pounds to the car. Actually, I think the paintscheme is okay for the Peugeot. Not real striking to me. As this 908 HDi FAP has been viewed as a real source of French hope, I probably would have liked the royal blue and white colors of the Peugeot logo, or perhaps colors of the French flag.

* Most cars actually look pretty horrible with American flag designs. The #31 Binnie Motorsports Lola B05/40 Zytek, however, is a great exception. I heard that Bill Binnie is a Scottish-born American. The car is in a wonderful blend of red, white, and blue. Let freedom ring!

* I still prefer the British Racing Green and yellow colors for Aston Martin Racing than the British Racing Green and red colors. Aston Martin Racing probably could better distinguish the two cars better by making one car's side mirrors in British Racing Green

* I never really liked the 550 Maranello or any variation of it. What I do love is the beautiful color scheme of the #67 Men-X 550 Maranello. The car has beautiful in black with blue accents including four-point star designs. It looks better than the also-lovely Men-X Ferrari 360 Modena like in Simbin's GTR.

--- Extras ---
* Much kudos to Greg Creamer up in the announce booth. He passionately described the Le Mans experience. He said that multi-class sportscar racing is like a symphony. Pretty interesting way to look at it. He even suggested people get to go out and get to come in person to Le Mans to take in the experience. I'd seriously love to go to Le Mans and experience this race in person. A bit of negative rep goes when he said (indirect quote) "...in fact, I suggest you stay here and enjoy NASCAR Happy Hour in Michigan. Then, stay with us to enjoy Le Mans from 8PM EDT all the way to the finish." Remember, sucking up to NASCAR (even if temporarily or briefly) with an event like the 24 Hours of Le Mans isn't needed to get people into this style of racing. Once I'm done watching as much of Le Mans as possible... that's my racing weekend. I might catch a little of the United States Grand Prix, but my racing weekend is all about Le Mans.

* Andrew Marriott is always an interesting pit reporter. He's probably the best commentator that isn't calling down the race. Always interesting to hear his voice and his comments.

* There was a funny interview with Joao Barbosa. When one of the pit reporters asked Barbosa about what it's like racing at high speed at Le Mans at night. He mentioned stuff about the car getting a little cold behind the wheel and not to mention smelling barbeque. He joked about being hungry after smelling barbeque (us Texans know barbeque best. Don't know about French barbeque, though.). For some reason, Justin Bell joked about zooming down the track and smelling weed. How did that get on the air?

* No matter what you think about these drivers and teams, you have to respect that while extremely focused on doing well at Le Mans, they still have a great sense of humor. The drivers are focused as hell, but still human and still can make a good laugh. I think this is great of these sportscar racing drivers to be professionals that can still have a good laugh.

And that's my Le Mans report. Peugeot has a new lease on life now. I'll try to stay up as much as I can to see how this ends up. My God... can't catch my breath after the big off by the #2 Audi! Help your opinionated Texas boy, someone!

Troublesome pitstop for the No. 2 Audi

The No.2 Audi Sport North America Audi R10 TDI suffered a troublesome pitstop when the rear wheel was not correctly fitted to the car. The mechanic narrowly avoided getting his hand stuck between the wheel and the bodywork of the car. No damage was done, and nobody was hurt. But a couple of seconds were lost on this car which is currently running 3 laps ahead of its sister No.1 Audi Sport North America Audi R10 TDI.
Looks like this was the pitcrews fault.

That is believed to be so the reason for the #2's crash.

If you watched the replay, you'll see the driver at the time, came down when the rear tire was not properly on. The mechanices believed that was a reason.

...which goes to show you that even giants stumble. Racing is a team game. I have concerns for the #1 Audi after its pitstop. Just wondering if the brief problem in the pits could make Audi get knocked out of contention. I asked if a win by Peugeot could be good for sportscar racing. Well if Peugeot rallies from behind to pass the #1 Audi, or if the #1 Audi has catastrophic failure, then Peugeot may have a chance to be the new power of sportscar racing. A win by Peugeot is more like when UNLV beat Duke in 1991 for the men's National Championship in the NCAA tournament.

Oh, boy... Risi Competizione back in the pits. Come on, boys! We need you! Represent Texas in France. They said the smell isn't good. Looks like Risi may have to let down its garage door...

Did you see the size of the concrete rock that was wedged under and between the front body work and the right front wishbones? The thing was larger than a softball! It's amazing it didn't crack the suspension.

Now the GT2 leading #87 Ferrari is stopped on the track. Cars are dropping like flies now.
Yes indeed.

Yeah, I saw that. Almost thought that was some meteorite in the car or something. It's freaking huge!

In other news, my Risi Competizione boys are done. The Risi-Krohn entry is the final hope for a Southeast Texas win.

Well, the #1 Audi has more than a 20 minute lead now on the #7 Peugot. Which means either Peugot is going to have to average 15 second faster laps than the Audi, or hope something goes wrong for the last remaining R10.

Anyone still awake besides me? Trying to decide whether I should get a couple hours of sleep before the finish or try to watch the rest of the race straight through.

Well anyways, looks like Audi is saying that the screwy pit stop wasnt the cause for the #2 car wreck:

10:35 hrs. Audi PR has issued an official statement regarding the exit of the left rear wheel of the No.2 R10 TDI: “The wheel nut was not loose due to a pit problem. What caused the rear wheel to leave the car can only be analysed after the race, when the Audi Sport technicians are able to examine the car. Dindo Capello was in the middle of his second stint, and had already driven for 54 minutes on the same set of tyres. This would exclude the suggestion of a mistake at the pit-stop”.

One day a Spyker will finish a race.

One day...

*Stares into distance*

Ive been pulling for the Saleens. The #54 is actually getting close to 4th place after the 007 Aston Martin was in the pits a few times with alternator troubles. Id be really happy if they could get a podium finish but barring any major problems from Aston Martin, I dont see that happening.

Looks like Pescarolo might be getting a podium finish with the #7 Peugeot in the garage.

Edit: Commentators just pointed out there are only two LMP2's left out of 11. Wow
