The 5 Reasons 2017 Will Be the Best Year for Sim Racing Yet

Just to clarify, Project CARS 1 has the Bentley Speed 8 and the Continental GT3. Ferrari's probably the name you're looking for.

The iRacing announcement video had four different Porsches. The article says there were only three.

Good article, though. It's certainly going to be a fun year for sim racing.

Still no true arcade game... Something like Ridge Racer type 4, F Zero or Burnout. Unfortunately, I don't like Driveclub and FH3 feels very repetitive. I miss so much the time of arcade games. Today, almost every racing game take itself too seriously. That's why FH3 is a critical success.

Yep. I love sims with licensed cars and tracks as much as anybody but, sometimes, I just want to play something where I can hop in and smash, jump and powerslide to my heart's content.

I think 2017 is going to have to pull out some more tricks to go past 2016 in terms of racing games. There were an awful lot of good games and content.

2017 is going to need to pull out something really special to make up for what I personally thought was a rather mediocre year for racing games in general, not just sims.

The racing game genre to me has to make for the worse it could of had done in the last 2 to 5 years already. We may not have a Burnout or Ridge Racer, but it would be cool to have a true arcade game to come back to stores. If Forza can still keep going to produce as much games as Call Of Duty, which has a sequel all year, but I am surprised that Forza Horizon 2 is almost identical to Forza Horizon 3, that could be one problem of repetition in between races, and not to mention it can not be a good grind to go through because of peoples time.

If all these games come out this year, it will be a mighty fine year, indeed. I would love to see pCars 2, but the game has not been shown to the public so... we will see. Forza 7 is set in stone, but i dont expect dynamic weather... im afraid the vanilla one wont be able to handle that. However.. Forza 7 in 4k, with improved FFB and full VR support? Sold! GT Sport will have a hard time against these two, but its a mighty fine looking game and im in for some Porsche porn!

Go onto the PS store, there's a ton of arcade racing games on there.

"Ton" is quite an overstatement. On PS4, it's pretty much two NFS titles, Driveclub, The Crew, and a bunch of middling indie releases that don't really scratch the same itch.

We're lucky to have Forza Horizon 3, but these days it feels like the only option. And if you happen to not enjoy it, there's little else for you to play. That's the problem.

I have few expectations from GTsport ... in comparison of all the other games, in my opinion , will be the worst as it is set, and the direction it has taken ... the only one of the lot where are gone finally the "double car" and just came in the fantasy car... do'h

Anyone considering a Nintendo Switch who didn't buy a Wii U would be remiss to pass up this year's Mario Kart game. Mario Kart 8 set a new standard for the series as a true and proper arcade racer, and I'm eager to play the next entry even if it's an expanded remake of MK8 with some extras, as it has appeared so far. Especially if we can expect the return of the 200cc class.

Looks like a good year for Gran Turismo, for a player that plays the newer games almost exclusively online, I'm expecting a streamlined experience that's simple and enjoyable, and the photo mode looks great. It seems that a lot of the player's gripes with the game don't bother me because I'm not that kind of player.

Have you played any of those "middling indie releases"? Because there are some very good ones on the PSN. The person I quoted, if you were paying attention, was wanting something like the old Ridge Racer or F-Zero games. There are a bunch of arcade racing games on the store that fit that category just fine. Have you gone into the store and narrowed it down to only racing titles? Because "ton" is not an overstatement. There's heaps of racing games, and most of them are arcade racers.

I'd like to start by showing you all exhibit A, the Steam 2016 top 100 game by revenue list

Notice that not one single racing game is on that list. Sure, there's Euro Trucksim, American Trucksim, Farming Simulator and Train Simulator all in the top 100, but absolutely no racing games. Put's us firmly in our place (which in my opinion is basically that racing games are primarily a console thing or a tiny PC niche for those who can afford expensive wheel peripherals).

Anyway, back with what we are getting in 2017... For me the following are most exciting:
  • Forza 7, with better wheel support (according to rumors), Scorpio capabilities should mean a more impressive end result on PC. Really looking forward to this one.
  • I fully expect Codemasters to announce both a new IP from the Evolution team and the sequel to DiRT Rally. Whether either makes it to a 2017 release is not clear yet, but both should be worth the wait.
  • pCARS 2. As a backer I am not allowed to tell you what is showing up in the daily builds, but I'll just say that the track and race car selection is second to none. It will be the benchmark.
  • Assetto Corsa isn't releasing a sequel in 2017, but they've already announced more tracks, Italian and British car packs and more. The selection of road cars is now pretty compelling and will only become more so.
  • GT Sport... Well, as time goes by and Forza goes PC my enthusiasm dampens. Obviously I'll buy it, but at this point I don't expect to get anywhere near as many hours out of it as GT5 Prologue, let alone GT5/GT6.

We just hope nobody forgets about Ruf in the rush to add Porsche!
Yeah, no. Lets be honest, we've yet to see even a Yellowbird in Forza Motorsport 6 or Horizon 3, despite us noticing a 911 previewed pre-Porsche DLC in Horizon 3, so Ruf was probably, in game dev's minds, just the backup plan for not having access to Porsche. I certainly can't imagine the 3400K, CTR3 or the RGT making returns in racing games now that the devs can have access to the Cayman, the Carrera GT, or the modern 911 in their places, maybe the Yellowbird at best, but thats it.
So, yeah, RIP RUF.
I'll miss the BTR, not that it appeared in anything other than Gran Turismo.

I've looked on PS4 and, yeah, I'm not seeing it. I was remiss in not mentioning Trackmania, but otherwise I don't really know what you're talking about. I see some Milestone motorcycle titles and a handful of top-down racers and Mario Kart clones. I wouldn't say any of them compare to F-Zero or R4, though.

Speaking of, R4 is my favorite game ever, so if there's something like that hiding on the PSN, I'd really like to know about it! :)

the five reasons? i can see only one reason...

The eSport reason is not making the simracing better... it's good only for WAAC players and ePro teams...

PC2 and GTS are heavily based on eSport so for the above reason they don't do better simracing...

PC2 and GTS and FM7 are all simcades so in no way they will make simracing better unless one or more of them will become more simulation and less arcadish...

So the only reason is PORSCHE and lucky enough i already have 24 amazing Porsche cars (and the 25th and maybe more will come in 2017) in AC so more Porsche in 2017 means in another games i dont know if i am gonna buy...

unless there will be another game of the quality of AC, R3E or RF2 the simracing scene will be in 2017 as good as in 2016 IMHO...

Nothing in the article excites me with exception of Pcars 2, which may not be as good as it sounds if they're adding all the extra stuff just so they can write it on the box (40 AI anyone?). So i will hold my excitement for that. What would really excite me though is hearing that wreckfest is coming to console, but no doesn't seam to be happening.

I am looking very much forward to the new racing IP from Codemasters on which ex Evolution Studio members are working. I really hope they will release some decent info on it very soon!
Me too but i hope the physics are much better than DC.

I'm genuinely Baffled when i see people saying they're excited for GTS, take PDI off the game and stick some other name on it and excitement goes to meh looks average. Which is ironic as that's exactly what reaction PDI Being on the box should create with the last 10 years to go off.

Hmmmm, i didn't like PCARS but seeing how many ladders/championships there is just changed my mind...
GTS/iRacing/PCARS is my list :D

Ridge Racer 4 and F-Zero are both just average ho hum arcade racers to me, so pretty much any arcade racing games compare well to them IMO. I honestly don't see what's special about either of them in this day and age. F-Zero was cool 20 odd years ago, but since then there's been eleventy bajillion futuristic flying racing games released that are as good or better, and even when RR4 came out, I couldn't see for the life of me why anyone was even talking about it. It was pretty dull even when it was new. That's just my opinion though, which is why I consider a lot of the indie games on PSN better than those old games.

Just a thought though, but if an 18 year old arcade racing game is your favourite game ever, just play it on an emulator, and then you don't need a modern version of it.

Not gonna lie, a part of me died a little reading that.

I'm not going to bore you by explaining why I love those games, but I will answer your last point there. You enjoy sim racing, right? Why didn't you just stop at rFactor? Somebody who doesn't understand/appreciate sim racing might ask you that. And you might respond that while rFactor might have been great ten years ago, technological advancements and so on mean that we can achieve a more accurate simulation today, and that's why you're excited for new titles.

Although you can't see it in the case of arcade racers, the same is true of all games and all genres. Everyone wants more of what they like. They want to see it redone a little differently, maybe a little deeper, with all the benefits that a new generation of hardware can bring. I still go back to R4 and F-Zero GX now and then, and I still love them just as much as I always have. But my mind goes crazy with excitement thinking about what a modern version of those games could achieve. That's what it's all about.

What I am Most excited about for 2017 on the PS4.

Assetto Corsa: - Public Lobbies. And a more Polished Title. a Great SIM experience is Only part of the Equation.
2017 should be a Great year for this Title on the Console.

Project Cars II: - I'm hoping that we might see this title hit the Shelves for Holiday 2017
Based on how much we all enjoy Project Cars, I can't expect anything less than a Great Sim experience

Gran Turismo Sport: - While we have been anticipating this Title for over 2 years.
I hope it's release dose not disappoint its Fan fare.

Will it Wow us, like past GT titles have.. Maybe Not, due to the Already Great titles on the Console we currently have.
But it will Live up to the GT family most of us use as the Litmus test for all other SIMs.

Now, the only problem will be finding enough time in the week to enjoy it all.
