60GB or 80GB?

Can I just ask WHY?! Im a member of several different forums and this is the ONLY one that demands you must read all posts to enure you are not repeating something that was written 3 or 4 pages ago.

If its to do with server bandwidth then dont the premium members and ads pay for that??

I'm a Premium member on another forum I use, and even before I was, not once did someone complain because I posted something in a thead that had been posted before.
I can't and won't answer for Duke, but from a fellow member's standpoint and from a common understanding of the English language, there is a big difference between a demand and a request, just as there is between "can" and "will". Even Duke said "you can then find yourself in trouble with the staff", not "you will".

In other words, in a situation where a member makes no effort to check previous posts before posting and thus regularly posts the same info and the same questions that have already been brought up before, and do so over and over again, the staff at GTP have reasonable cause to deal with such a member in an appropriate manor.

Now as for your not being able to understand why this is even an issue... perhaps it's because repeated posts and threads that cover the exact same info and ask the exact same questions just clutters up a message board making it all the more difficult for other people to find the information and questions they are looking for.

Perhaps the reason you don't bother to take the time to browse through less than 50 posts in a thread is because, based on your own p[ersonal experience on other forums, you are so used to threads filled with posts with repetitive info and questions, you have now become accustomed to simply ignoring previous posts... in which case, you have just gave a prime example on why it's a good idea that people don't repost the same info and questions that have already been covered by others in the same thread... or making new threads that cover the exact same topic that another thread already covers.

Regardless, I think the only person making a federal case out of this is you. May I suggest you simply accept the policy and move on, or if you simply can't accept it, consider going back to that other forums that allow, perhaps even encourages multiple posts and threads covering the exact same topics... as maybe it then creates a false impression that their forum is very popular?

Personally, I like that this forum is fairly easy to navigate, and that in general the people that post here are very informative, civil, and do take the time to read through threads before posting. 👍

Go take a look at the GT5:P board and you will perhaps begin to get an idea of why we frown upon repeat posts.

It will also explain why we take a dim view of people who blatantly inform us that they don't bother to read before posting.

How big a difference is it between a person who "can't be arsed" to see if a question has been answered already and one who can't be arsed to see if a question has been asked already before posting yet another repeat thread?

Especially one who militantly declares his right to read or not read as he pleases?

With well over 100,000 members, the reason these forums are usable at all (let alone as good as they are) is that both staff and members alike work hard to keep them clean and workable.

So we don't really take kindly to people who are not willing to be bothered to take a little care. Especially those who seem to resent a polite word of correction.

Repeat threads are annoying, and are frowned upon on all the other forums I visit, but a repeat post isn't as big a deal.

I was quite tired when I originally posted here, so I didn't want to read through 3 pages of whatever had been written and just wanted to give my opinion.

The OP asked a question, and the answer to his question will have been based on everyone's opinion, and not clear cut facts.

He didn't say "whats the difference between the 60GB and 80GB" where someone could just list the details.

He asked which one of the two he should buy, and I recommended the 80GB, others might have said go for the 60GB.

It was just my opinion on what he should go for. I normally do read most posts, but like I say, I was tired and just wanted to post my opinion.

Wiki has a very easy to read chart showing the key differences between all the different PS3 configurations:
That should give you most of what you need to know right there.

Personally, I wouldn't get to worked up over compatibility, as worst case scenario you can always pick up a PS2 for dirt cheap, and all versions will play PS1 games.

You can also easily, and for not very much money replace the HDD in a PS3 with a much larger one.

As for USB ports, I know I am almost always using all four for things like:
  • External USB Hard Drive
  • PS Eye
  • Wireless USB Keyboard & Mouse
  • Recharging Controllers
  • Recharging Bluetooth Headset
  • Transferring Files to and from USB Thumb Drives
  • iPod
  • Camcorder/Cameras
Now I know you can just swap out these as needed, but it's so much easier to have them all plugged in and not worry about it. I also know you can get USB Port extensions, turning one port into several, but I've also heard they can impact performance if multiple devices are running at the same time in the same extension ports.

The 40GB is also missing the Flash card readers, which I have used quite often to quickly transfer files from cameras and camcorders to the PS3, but again, it isn't necessary as you can always buy a USB Flash memory card reader.

One thing to consider is the version of processor in terms of cooler operation temperatures, and thus possibly a lower operating noise. The new PS3's (40GB and 80GB are supposedly now using the 65nm chips instead of the older 90nm chips. There is no performance advantage between the two, only that the 65nm chips are less expensive to make and produce less heat during operation.

Hope that helps shed some light on the subject and helps you make a more informed decision. 👍

UPDATE: I just got the PS3 version of SingStar over the weekend for our Memorial Day party, so that's yet another device that needs a USB slot.

Unless you really don't think you'll need more than two at any one time and don't mind swapping them out... or don't mind buying an external USB expansion slot... which may impact the performance of each device in the expansion slot if being used at the same time as the others, then this would be another reason to avoid the 40GB model.

For the life of me I will never understand why Sony didnt put at least 1 USB port on the back (like the original concept which had like 4!). Then everything would look tidy!

Agreed. It would have been a nice option.

Although for me, I am often having to remove most of the USB devices from the PS3 from time to time, and with the PS3 in a cabinet, it would make doing so very inconvenient... but having the option is always a good thing! Even just one USB port in the back would have been a really nice option. 👍

Is it possible to setup a remote USB port from computer to PS3 via wi fi? Like how you can currently stream stuff from the HDD. So you plug something into your computer and it comes up on your ps3..

Thought I would come back and let you guys know the 60GB turns out to have never been an option. In typical warehouse-style sales, Sam's Club left out a PS3 display with a price card for the 60gb when there was no 60gb in stock. :( 👎
They had the 40gb. :indiff:

The 40gb is definitely an improvement over the old 20gb (I think that's what it was), but I've decided the 80gb is the way to go. Of course, with that said, I would be willing to settle for a 40gb if necessary.

Originally I only wanted the larger model for wireless connectivity but now the 40gb has that so I'm satisfied that Sony went far enough to ensure both models don't need cables to my router.
However, with the price difference of the 40gb and 80gb I don't see any reason to buy the 40gb. I'd prefer to spend an extra hundred dollars and double the size of the hard drive while adding all the other features as well. 👍

Thanks for all the great links, data, and opinions.

Road Rash
Why would the 60gig machine have troules with the game that the 80 gig does not? It doesn't make sense.
I don't know, and your right; it doesn't make sense. I don't even think Rockstar knows why it happens, to be honest.

Look on the bright side dude...atleast this moderator was man enough to talk to you about it and explain why. I had to deal with one over in the GT threads who decided you must do a search before posting anything, and then closed the thread like a whiner baby when I posted a Sony press release.

Most of the time I'll do a search before I ask a question, and before I give my two cents I'll read through a thread unless its more than 5 pages, if thats the case I'll give my opinion anyway.

However if I'm crusin the web and find some info pertinent to this forum, or neat tidbits then I'll pop over and give it. ESPECIALLY, if its not in the particular category that I intend to post it in, Which I will atleast look down the page and make sure noone else posted something on the same topic.

Whining about a similar topic that is in an entirely different heading howevr is like I said...a bit tooooo much.

BTW doesn't this smiley ----->:ouch:<-----look like its pinching a loaf???:scared:

Wait, what?! The 40GB has wi-fi too?! I might as well get that one and save $100.

I'd suggest the same as well... However, the bundle coming soon is too good to turn up.
MGS4 (upon release) and the 80GB PS3 for only $500.
Basically, you get MGS4 and the 80gig for $40 more than a 40gb and MGS4.

That's a great deal even if you don't want MGS4.
I'm going to buy an 80gb either at the time of the bundle or at the end of the summer. Not sure when just yet but I'm sure it will be the 80gb. :sly: I can't wait!

So they do come with wi-fi?
lol

a lack of a yes or no tends to throw me off sometimes.

Why does wi-fi alway make me think about a sausage?

Oow yeah, I remember 💡
