i live 15 minutes away from that church, and sometimes i take the interstate from my school and right on interstate 75 northbound...look to your right, it's only about 100 feet away from you

62 feet tall

16000 pound weight approx.

over 8000 man hours put into this construction?

and cost about 250,000, costs more, costing roughly as much as a
2005 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

im indifferent about it; hows about you guys?

(but when i do see it, i cant help but say that thing is freaking huge...you literally cannot miss it when driving down that interstate and driving right by it)

Ok, gotta put my piece in here. I'm sure it was done to draw people in. But that's simply not needed.

that looks like a huge idol to me. And we know how God feels about idolitry.

I imagine it's scared a few drunk drivers off the bottle from time to time, so it can't be all bad.

yeah that would be quite a scary sight if you were drunk. you think you would say JESUS! if you were to swerve off the road and hit it?
personally i think its a bit gaudy. a church does not really need those things, just a building, some wooden seats (if even those), some books, and a altar.

Yep, the rest is about God. Though I do like to have music, a good sound system and the ability to use presentation software. But it's not a needed part of a ministry, just nice extras.

haha yeah, our school helps out a area in haiti and they bring back pictures every year. now those people are devoted. blazing weather, usually packed with standing room only.....i can't even imagine wanting to go to church here and they go while enduring the horrible heat. it really makes you think about how much you have to hear about and see those things.

I agree with GT4 and Swift. Its nice, but its going a bit over board. I think the simple cross on top of the church did good enough.

But even with a statue like this, it doesn't and can't change my views on being an Atheist. And I'd still take the Ferrari over this statue anytime.

What a waste of resources. Many poor people pay donations to the church to do something good with it, hoping that their little donation might make a difference, and then some church blows the money on something like that. Besides that it costs a lot, it's also freaking ugly. This is definitely the American way of putting christianity into practice.

yeah im with smelly socks, our school does that too. we have some awful walk-a-thon and last time they spent the money (that i thought was for haiti) on automatic plastic bleachers that were color coordinated to spell out our schoo letters.....what a waste.

I still don't see the point to this thread, the statue, or why it was ever constructed. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

i asked what everyone thought about it, then we could discuss what everyone thought about it and hopefully come to a conclusion about this statue...

again i state im indifferent...but those weak in faith wouldnt have a problem turning that into a graven image

Why put a big obnoxious semi-pointless anything in front of your place of business? Especially if it's a giant multi-hundred-thousand dollar chunk of concrete paid for by your own customers, with the cash that either neglected to buy your groceries and feed your family or go and feed other needy families.

Hypocrisy, IMO.

you say everything about christianity is hypocrisy, PS :P

so anyone like it? so far everyone here doesnt like it or doesnt care for it

edit, except for zrow who thinks it's pretty cool :dopey:

Most of it is, though.

My point was for anything, not just churches in general. If it was a synagogue or a mosque do you think I would act any differently about it? No. That money collected every day from loyal church goers could have been spent on an infinite number of better choices.

Man, sheesh. I agree it's stupid but since you obviously don't believe in church or faith, how do you know what's a better way to spend the money?

Please note, the context of the following post is simply targeted toward belivers. Please dont flame me for pushing my belifes as fact. It isn't meant that way.

That's a bit overkill,don't you think?

Yes, It's also against the ten comandments. You know, the one about "Thou shalt not worship graven images". Most people kind of blow that one off I guess, but one of the reasons if not the reaon that is one of the ten commandments is because we have no clue what god or jesus looks like. not only is it misdirected worship while were here, but when jesus comes back, if he dosent look like that, I have met some people that would probably stand there and go. "That guy up there in the clouds dosen't look like Jesus." :dunce:

Again, note the above disclaimer.

thats worthy of signature recognition  👍

How do I know what's a better way to spend the money? Are you arguing that you would waste over $250,000 on a giant statue, when multiple families could be fed for a year? Or even donate it to cancer research, or an orphanage or something.

I hardly think my being atheist has anything to do with my judegment on how well I can spend money. Even my uncle is a Registered Accountant and one of my cousins is a broker, so I have some, not a ton, of experience with how money is controlled.

What? It's a big statue - not exactly a very the most debatable thing in the world. If you want a "real" opinion on it, then maybe it serves its purpose; don't you always argue that the church is all about outreach? This seems to fit that purpose, and it's far less invasive than say, a Christian-based law.

It does, cause it was money either donated or raised by the people in the church. So it's not like they're taking tax money.

But man...that's just plain stupid, the statue I mean.

Exactly. 👍

Anyone who's read the bible should know. You know Jesus didn't like this(actually, he'd been very upset, IMO). Very foolish. 👎

they could've at least sculpted it better.

the face looks way screwed up.

It is obvious that people in that parish new about statue before it was there. Usually priests don't suprise parishioners with stuff like that, and to put up a sculpture of that size you would need to ask people around if they don't mind. Also, if you wouldn't be such a lazy ass PS and click the link you could read that:

This monument was commissioned by Solid Rock Church of Monroe, Ohio. As the costs of its production far exceeded the commission, it was also made possible through the contributions of time and funds on the part of Coriell Studios and sculptor Jim Lynch.

And, the church is still standing, so people still go there. So they don't mind that their money was used for that. And even if your father invented accountancy, what right would it give you to dictate people how to spend their money?

and the statue.... not a bad sculpture imo, only the purpose of it escapes me :)

I don't mind it at all. It's just another way to practice the Freedom of Speech right that we all have. If I was driving past the church, more than likely I would look over and comment about the statue. In the us we have statues such as the statue of liberty, Abraham Lincoln, etc., What about Jesus, besides being on top of catholics churchs and in paintings? If you want to call that Idolitry, you might as well dub all of the sculptures that men put thousands of hours into and the paintings Idolitry. If I were Jesus (no offense meant to any christian on this message board :nervous: :D), I'd take it as a compliment.
