Can anybody explain why drivers keep their visors open? Surely they can't have enough time to close them if they're on a crash course.

Edit: #21 closed up shop.

Just came to say that Vette is leading GTE Pro, soccer sucks foot balls and I wish this race was either shown in full or simply not at all. Seriously, I'd rather watch anime til I fall asleep than chase patchy, cheap coverage.
DO YOU HEAR ME FOX?!?!? DO YOU HEAR ME VERIZON?!?!?

If you've ever worn a full face helmet, closing it can get quite humid and stuffy, and since these cars are closed you really don't need them to be closed. Sure, closing it might help in a crash, but these monocoques are so sturdy that it doesn't really matter (see 2011).

And 12 (Toyota) and 14 (practice with Audi)

I'm thinking that drivers would lower their visor if they detected a fire, to protect their faces, right?

Aside from the helmets they have flame retardant headsocks, so it's still not that big of an issue. It's probably more a holdover from open cockpits and the more significant damage possible in GT cars, or if your land roof first like the CLR way back then.

Edit: Just considered, they might also have the neck braces a la Formula 1, in which case the helmets are for protecting your neck more than your head.
