A condition called "GT5 Knee!"

Experienced a twinge in my knee after racing online a few weeks ago. It got progressively worse until today I had to go to see an Othroped. He said it was (real term) Patellofemoral Pain a.k.a Runners Knee. It can happen with activity or long periods of in-activity with the knee in a bent position like when driving a car. He gave me a cortisone injection directly into the soft tissue just below and to the right of the knee. Said it would start feeling better tomorrow and be great in about a week. Gave me a list of exercises to do to strengthen it and keep it from occuring again. Said if the pain continued then it's probably miniscus related. Since I first experience the pain after getting up from racing behind the wheel I'm pretty confident that was the cause. Surprised as heck. Fortunately, I can still race because my wheel has hand paddles. I can keep the knee elevated periodically on an ottoman or something.

And NO I'm not kidding with you!

Anyone else?

Yeah mine sometimes hurt a bit after racing, and it did start getting worse. My wheel stand broke though so know I cant play it! Looks like I was lucky, I could have ended up in your position!

Analog controls on MLB: The Show do that to my thumb. 60+ flicks on the analog stick per 9 innings x however many games in a row I choose to play (sometimes as many as 4 or 5, but usually 1-3) = ouch. If anything it makes me more patient to swing, hate to constantly foul off pitches if it causes pain!

I've gotten this too. It's like a cramp on the bottom of my feet. It gets cramped if it's bent. I noticed that it gets better if you're wearing shoes or slippers.

Never happened to me, then again, I don't sit in the same position for prolonged duration and am smart enough to take break, stretch, stand up a bit to break up rigor.

Sounds a lot like what happened to me. I had the following condition right in the middle of GT Academy:

http://www.aafp.org/afp/991101ap/2012.html

Although the trigger for the initial pain was when I was running on the treadmill, it did force me to stop playing for quite a while. On the few occasions during my rehab when I tried to run a few laps for the Academy, it only aggravated the knee again.

Right now, playing GT5 for too long will make my knees sore. Same thing happens if I'm doing any long-distance driving in my car. That's why I do quad stretches and squats every once in a while.

I've got a VERY similar issue. Had a knee issue called a 'tight IT Band' where there is a muscle on the side of your leg that gets tight, causing it to pull the knee cap a little to one side. Its usually caused by weight training/running, and lack of stretching (guilty on both accounts).

Anyway, I noticed that it starts to hurt a little when in my racing seat knee at a 90deg angle). The solution, use a foam roller to stretch it maybe 10 minutes a day. After daily stretching for a few weeks, it stopped the issue. Video below for anyone interested:

Issue ofcourse, is that the seating position in a real life car is HUGELY different to almost sitting on the floor of a racing seat.

I have more trouble with painful shoulders and neck after a GT session - gripping onto the DFGT wheel tightly to try and beat those Expert Seasonals!

Thumb(s)* for me. As a young man, I played a lot of basketball and did a lot of climbing. Whilst I work in an office now and have done for a decade and a half, I also used to work on a farm. I've lost count of the times I've mangled my hands, up to and including shutting one finger in a train door. For those old enough to remember, I mean the train doors you used to have to reach outside through the window to open ... anyway, my left thumbs is weak as hell after an hour or two of GT5 and my accelerator finger (the one I shut in the train door) throbs like a basturt.

Usually I'm switched on enough to take a break, but sometimes when you're grinding, enduroing or even fine tuning a car, you can get lost in this game...

* - Obviously, GT5 only requires one thumbs, shooters require both. My mates enjoy watching me flail around in multi-player shooters. Give me a mouse and keyboard you schtinking peeeegs and then we'll see who's laughing..!!

ouch that dont sound good. take it easy dude!!

DS3 player here. my left thumb hurts a bit now and again but i guess its just my body saying HAVE A REST!!!

I haven't had any problems with GT5 so far as I'm always too busy working to be able to spend long enough playing.

I had a problem with GT4 after spending too much time playing the endurance races I would have to use Deep Heat on my thumb to get it moving again and patch up the blisters with sticky plasters.

Harden up a bit people !!! I've had 5 knee dislocations , 2 left 3 right , tore the top of my right tibia off and shattered it into 6 pieces, fractured my kneecap, snapped my AC ligament and fractured L3, L4 vertebrae and you don't hear my complaining. And I'm not making this up , i think you all need a spoon full of concrete and harden the **** up.

I'm guessing this wasn't playing GT5.

or was it?! :boggled:

Really need to see a paediatric. Not good.

Did you really mean Paediatric?
Wikipedia
Not to be confused with Podiatry.

No offence intended, of course. I mean, you could be a child, but I don't know if you'd specifically need a paediatric podiatrist. :D

I use a normal computer chair at my computer desk, and the only problem I ever had was actually in my arms, shoulders and neck because I used to sit too low to the wheel. I raised the pedals and everything's been fine since. Although, I do occasionally get cramp in my clutch leg, but that's because I'm an idiot, and it happens to me in real cars too! :dopey:

How's your set-up? I decided to make my own rig and can sit in it for hours. I used to do the recliner and table thing, but it just wasn't gettin it.

Sounds to me like the injury in question was caused by getting up rather than the racing itself... so the solution would seem obvious. :P

Set up: Driving Force Wheel (Wireless) on a nightstand bolted with bungee cords and using a kitchen table. Eventually I'll get one of those chrome seats.

The Orthoped is the same group used by the Jax Jaguars. They KNOW knee injuries. He said it was definitely the sitting with the knee bent for so long. Even laughed when I told him about GT5. He called it GT5 Knee!

Just gotta keep it straight more than bent. So the ottoman or a box to lean my foot on so the knee stays straight is the ticket. Still have to and WILL finish the A-spec Enduros. Got 5 to go.

doing vettel challenge last two days... and my wrists are bit hurt^^ but 2.07.5xx is nice or? :dopey: so who cares :)

used 10 FFB since my DFGT arrived from shop :P

Full FFB is fun but will shorten the lifespan of your wheel significantly. My G25 barely managed 2 years with full FFB in GT and rFactor.

I have mine (G25) set to max in GT5P, GT5, GTR2 (for the PC). Bought the wheel in 2008 (when GT5P came out) and it's still rockin'. Racing sim is the only game I play so it's daily routine although I was too busy last summer to play games. I'm trying hard to "unintentionally" break the G25 so that a purchase of a T500RS is justified.

hehehe  - bought mine in Jan 2009 to replace a (cheap) Driving Force EX and it started to grind and rattle a couple of months ago. F1 mods on rFactor and running the WRS here at GTPlanet are what did the damage.... I must admit that the desire for a new wheel accelerated the process :P Now running Fanatec GT3 with G25 pedals but awaiting Clubsports to complete the set. 👍

Wow never saw this thread. I have seen this too with my foot cramping. I noticed I push the pedal a lot with my toes instead of my foot. I guess to feather the throttle more controllably. I would stop if I could but I don't know I am doing it until it starts to ache.

I don't know why but in my rig I have noticed that I try to keep my leg straight up and down, so I think that is why my knee starts to hurt.
