I just need to know these few things:

  1. Is there any way I can play my songs on my iPod without syncing?
Well is there any software I can download which lets me drag and drop my songs just like an ordinary mp3? Syncing is pretty much pointless, because i just sync songs which is already on my iPod hard drive! :ouch:
  2. How can I arrange my songs according to the tracklist?
Tried to arrange them in the playlist on iTunes, but to no avail. Tried to edit the actual song file, but still wasn't in order in my iPod. I find it stupid why can't the iPod have the songs play in order like on iTunes.Which lead me to the next question...
  3. Is it possible to edit the ID3 tags on a MP4 file?
Hopefully this will get them to play in order....

The main thing that i'm complaining is the playlist. Most of my songs do play in order, but there is a certain songs which i put together into a playlist of the album. I mean, I have songs which are both in mp3 and mp4 format, so does it affect how the playlist will be on the iPod will be like? If so, then is there any way I can make it play in order?

Oh yeah, I own a 160GB iPod Classic.

- Sync: You want to play songs on your computer without having to start iTunes, correct? I don't think that it can be done... If you're talking about having files automatically shared between your PC and your iPod, you can turn off that functions in the "properties" window I believe.

- Tracklists: I believe you click on the far, far left hand corner of that playlist in the iTunes window. As for on the iPod, they play in the oder they are placed on the player... Not much you can do about that one, AFAIK.

- Edit ID3 tags: You should be able to. Right click on the song in iTunes and select "get info" (or is it "edit info?")...

easier way to get a normal MP3 ;)
Thanks, but i'm not gonna waste my money on another mp3.... :yuck:

Sync: No, not actually. I can do that easily (or so I think) but usually I just play my songs on iTunes. But what I was asking is, can you play songs on your iPod without syncing? I mean is there any software which would make my iPod more mp3-ish? (I can play songs and videos straight from my iPod HD without the need to sync the playlist and/or videos on iTunes)

Tracklists: Tried to do that, but still the tracklist come out funny on my iPod. It like it starts from 1,10,2,3.... etc. and some of them was like 1,7,4,3,5.....etc. I notice that some of them had the same track number, so I changed the number of the track into order, but still, it would play not in order on my iPod.... :banghead:

Edit ID3 tags: Funny thing is that, I edit them like so, and yet the original mp3 file still hasn't changed. So that either means every time I open my iTunes, the information just resets.... :ill:

Now things just got worse....
I can't sync my iPod at all! It has this error message everytime i wanted to sync with my iTunes:
"The iPod "user's iPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-48).
So what does that mean? Now I need to try and reinstall my iTunes and see what happens next......

Well thanks for the help guys (or much lack of it anyways.....) Had solved the two problems regarding my sync and track order problem. I reinstalled my iTunes and now I can sync my iPod perfectly. The track order seems rather weird to me. I had to click on the Artist instead of the track number to get my songs play in order. It seems like when I click the track number, it arranges my song like 1,10,11, etc. Weird huh?

I don't know what iPod you have but... I liked these when I had my 5G video.

As for the track order, if you go into info FOR EACH song they will have a track order. I think that will designate what song plays when. Or you can create a playlist and I think it will play in the order you add it provided you aren't shuffling.
Well I own a 6th gen iPod Classic 160GB if you wanted to know.....

Well I think I had tried those softwares before. Seems easier to use iTunes instead of those other software. But still, you need to sync with your iPod with those software right? I was looking for something which lets me play my songs on my iPod HD without using the computer to sync the songs into my iPod. I don't even know how to word it but..... lets just say, if i wanted my i iPod to handle more like a normal mp4 player would (lets say a Creative Zen for example) So is that even possible?

Let's put it this way, say you go to your friends house and you want to give them your music you discovered. SharePod will let you do it. If you didn't have it apple's DRM prevents you from getting it off at least finding the song you want. As for Podplayer if you go to someone computer that doesn't have itunes on it and start this program then it will play the songs off the ipod as if it were a regular MP3 player connected like a thumb drive.

I think both programs reside in the ipod so there's no need to install programs on every computer. If you have itunes on your computer it will automatically come up before you start these programs.

As for it being a new ipod I don't know if they made it less "open" but there isn't anyway to use these programs with a touch.

The main reason for that being that the iPod touch uses the Mac file system rather than the FAT32 system Windows use to use. Thus, the touch cannot function like flash drive and such.

The other iPods can be setup differently, but you will need to use a program at first (which V1P3R suggested)

iTunes uses what's called a metabase to store information about your music library, so changes you make to the files themselves are unlikely to have an effect on the library unless you re-import them.

I have had some difficulties with albums playing in the wrong order. I fix this by ensuring that the "of" field is set correctly, so that the tracks show as "1 of 10", "2 of 10" etc.

Finally, I only have a 16GB player, but 65GB of music. Drag and drop editing you say? Create a playlist (mine is called 16G IPOD), then drag songs you want on the player onto it. Then set the iPod to sync only selected playlists, and choose the one you've created. iTunes will always show you the size of the playlist, so it's easy not to overload the device.

Maybe this is getting confusing (sorry about that) but i'll try to clear up a bit....

Now, I don't need these softwares to run on my pc because i don't buy songs from iTunes. Rather, I burn the album from my cd and transfer it into onto my iPod HD. I also (kinda feel guilty saying this...) download songs from the internet (not gonna tell you that) and put them on my iPod HD. Then I just make a playlist on iTunes and copy the songs and paste them onto the playlist (this does make it read the file and made it able to play on my iPod)

So the thing is, lets say I want to bring my iPod somewhere, I do need to sync the iPod first before unplugging it from my pc (if not, there would be no songs on my iPod, duh! :dunce:) If you know already, when you sync your file, it copy your music file onto your iPod right (and use your HD)? The thing is, I'm like wasting my iPod HD memory doing this (because I have both the mp3 file and the sync file on my iPod) Like I wanted to ask, (and hopefully you guys would understand.....) is there a way I can play my MP3 files straight from my iPod HD without syncing? Okay, if you guys are still confused, here is a photo of what i'm trying to say.....

This is how my playlist looks like (might look messy, but its better than bunching up your songs....) All of the songs are from my iPod drive, so i can't play those songs without plugging in my iPod. But thats not the problem....

This is where I kept my songs in my iPod drive.
Note: the G: drive is my iPod drive.....

Heres the big problem (don't laugh at why i'm trying to save some HD space when I got still a lot......) As you can see, the Audio File is all the songs that i sync with my iPod, and the Others File is my MP3 file on my iPod. Can you see what i'm trying to say here? This is just getting hopeless...... :guilty:

First off... I think you may have a problem. If they are .Mp3 files it shouldn't show up as other. You may want to do a restore. Do you have itunes set on manual and don't sync? Secondly, the playlist thing looks more complicated and counter productive than adding tags and using the iPods intended menu organization via artist.
