Brian Redman Challenge Demonstrates the Dangers of Road Racing

Today's vintage racers seek to recreate the glory days of road course competition. Occasionally they recreate the realities too.
Many drivers write-off vintage racing as nothing more than a parade of pampered show cars that's less serious and risky than any other form of road racing.
But drivers and spectators at this year's running of the VSCDA's Brian Redman International Challenge at Road America, July 14-17, were dramatically reminded about the dangers of road racing during a multi-car crash at the start of a Group 6 race.
No one was injured in the wreck, which further underscores the importance of following the sanctioning body's safety regulations no matter what form of racing you're involved in. That said, photos snapped during the clean-up at www.pbase.com/atrltd/bric2005 will absolutely break your heart if you're a fan of vintage American iron. Check them out but don't say we didn't warn you.
On a more positive note, the Brian Redman International Challenge, held July 14-17, attracted some 600 vintage racers to Road America this year. The great Mario Andretti was grand marshal of the event which featured historic F-1 and Can Am racing. For more pictures from the event, including shots of the greatest driver of the 20th century signing autographs, check out www.roadamerica.com.
The Horrors

Wow, that look gnarly. Glad to see everyone wasn't badly injured....That just shows how dangerous racing truly was back in the good ole days. Damn...Now thinking of it, imagine if that happened on the Mulsanne straight.....

That sucks, but I'll offer this in consolation: cars are meant to drive. Better this than rotting away in a leaky barn somewhere or just getting crushed at the recyclers.

Way too true. Like most old cars, They're fixable. :) I recall seeing this on Jalopyjournal last week. Several people post pics of their rods there when they get hit, and usually, their car is less messed up than what hit them!

Sad to see them damaged but great to see them driven, I hope those owners are ready to fork out for repairs.

Looks like quite a few of them would be writeoffs/irrepairable. I'm sure the owners would do whatever they could to get them repaired. If they can afford the car, I'm sure they can afford to fix it.
And it is good to see them driven, even if it is seldomly.
Don't really like people who buy a $200,000 Corvette, Hemi Cuda, Ferrari, etc and then keep it under lock and key in a climate controlled garage for years.

These cars are ment to be used. Wrecks are a part of the business, they will happen. I'd rather be in a multiple pile-up in a race car, with a full safety cage, a four point harness, a fire extinguishing system, wearing a nomex suit and crash helmet surrounded by a team of marshalls - then a multiple pile-up in a normal road car on a motorway/freeway.

The pictures arn't something i needed to see just before this weekend 👎

That's a one big mess! Beautiful cars though, and glad to hear that no one was hurt. 👍

That was the best laugh I've had in a while.

Thank god it wasn't my car or someone I know, or I might feel bad.

God bless America.
Gee, thanks, sheisskopf. Do you ever have anything decent to say? You'd better start, then.

Chances are, the race has been red-flagged by then. Otherwise, civilians probably wouldn't be allowed on the track.

I believe my friend was supposed to be in that race, in a different class. Unfortunately the early pile-up took so long to clean up that his race was cancelled.
