Hey yall.
Taking a look at the artists I've been listening to over the last few years, most of them are acoustic rock or slightly easier-listening to my Rage Against the Machine days. I'm always on the lookout for new bands or artists that fit the bill, and they usually tickle my fancy because of the guitar sound and feel.
For a while now I've been listening to Eels. The lyrical content is ridiculously raw and emotional, so it gets a little too heavy sometimes, but in some ways it's nice to know that he's always got it worse off than me. Probably the only reason I would ever start smoking is because of this guy's voice. So rich and deep. The guitar parts are also often pretty interesting in how they compliment the vocalist in intensity or delicate emotion.
Lately I've been really big on Counting Crows. It's good to just put on while something else is happening. The vocal melodies tend to be pretty complex and irregular, so it doesn't really require constant attention to get the feeling out of it. But then he busts out some sweet melodies and it livens up the room (Mr. Jones, Omaha, Murder of One, Hangin' Around).
I've always been a big fan of Live. They've got some really good high energy stuff. There's some sweet punchy stuff in there, like Iris, Pain Lies by the Riverside. Since the day I heard it, Lightning Crashes has been my favorite all time song.
Another lesser known guy I really like a lot is Scott Sullivan (http://www.scottsullivanmusic.com/music.php). He's a snowboard photographer that does some music on the side for the movies he shoots. Check out tracks like Seatown or Long Gone Innocence.
Long-time favorite is indie group Dispatch. They threw the biggest indie rock concert ever, 100,000 strong. They've got some really great tracks, but a lot of it is too influenced by their jam-style, which tends to drag on for too long at times.
I've also got a taste for Jack Johnson for obvious reasons. Nice calming music. A little too "sing-a-long-ee" at times, but also has some solid b-sides that I really like (Do You Remember, Drink the Water, F-Stop Blues). Fun stuff to learn on the guitar too.
Other favorites of late are Echo & the Bunnymen, a solid 80s/90s number, Aussie rockers The Church, indie dude Lazlo Bane, Rusted Root, newcomers Electric President, classic acoustic rock of Violent Femmes. There are a number more, but those seem to be the guys I always go to.
Anyone else also really dig this genre? Anything I should/shouldn't be looking out for?
