Acoustic Rock.Music

Hey yall.

Taking a look at the artists I've been listening to over the last few years, most of them are acoustic rock or slightly easier-listening to my Rage Against the Machine days. I'm always on the lookout for new bands or artists that fit the bill, and they usually tickle my fancy because of the guitar sound and feel.

For a while now I've been listening to Eels. The lyrical content is ridiculously raw and emotional, so it gets a little too heavy sometimes, but in some ways it's nice to know that he's always got it worse off than me. Probably the only reason I would ever start smoking is because of this guy's voice. So rich and deep. The guitar parts are also often pretty interesting in how they compliment the vocalist in intensity or delicate emotion.

Lately I've been really big on Counting Crows. It's good to just put on while something else is happening. The vocal melodies tend to be pretty complex and irregular, so it doesn't really require constant attention to get the feeling out of it. But then he busts out some sweet melodies and it livens up the room (Mr. Jones, Omaha, Murder of One, Hangin' Around).

I've always been a big fan of Live. They've got some really good high energy stuff. There's some sweet punchy stuff in there, like Iris, Pain Lies by the Riverside. Since the day I heard it, Lightning Crashes has been my favorite all time song.

Another lesser known guy I really like a lot is Scott Sullivan (http://www.scottsullivanmusic.com/music.php). He's a snowboard photographer that does some music on the side for the movies he shoots. Check out tracks like Seatown or Long Gone Innocence.

Long-time favorite is indie group Dispatch. They threw the biggest indie rock concert ever, 100,000 strong. They've got some really great tracks, but a lot of it is too influenced by their jam-style, which tends to drag on for too long at times.

I've also got a taste for Jack Johnson for obvious reasons. Nice calming music. A little too "sing-a-long-ee" at times, but also has some solid b-sides that I really like (Do You Remember, Drink the Water, F-Stop Blues). Fun stuff to learn on the guitar too.

Other favorites of late are Echo & the Bunnymen, a solid 80s/90s number, Aussie rockers The Church, indie dude Lazlo Bane, Rusted Root, newcomers Electric President, classic acoustic rock of Violent Femmes. There are a number more, but those seem to be the guys I always go to.

Anyone else also really dig this genre? Anything I should/shouldn't be looking out for?

Good taste you have! I'm into all you listed as well as new acts like Feist (iPod ad 1234), David Mead, Aqualung, Great Lake Swimmers and the latest Paul Simon album is great.

Here are a list of songs that are on the 'softer' side that I personally love. You might dig the groups enough to get interested in them.

Ever listen to "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young?

Or these songs...

Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here"

David Lee Roth - "Damn Good Times"

Blur - "Coffee and TV"

Alan Parsons Project - "Don't Answer Me"

Love & Rockets - "So Alive"

Michael Penn - "No Myth"

Mike and the Mechanics - "Taken In"

The Motels - "Only The Lonely"

Traveling Willburys - "Handle With Care"

The Alarm- "Rain In The Summertime"

The Stone Roses - "I Wanna Be Adored"

Tears For Fears - "Pale Shelter"

Simply Red - "I Keep Holding On"

Roxy Music - "More Than This"

Robyn Hitchcock - "Balloon Man"

Payolas - "Eye of a Stranger"

Icicle Works - "Whisper To A Scream"

Bronski Beat - "Run Away (Small Town Boy)"

Breathe - "Hands To Heaven"

I don't listen to much acoustic, but when I do it'll usually be from Nikola Sarcevic's (lead singer of Millencolin) solo albums, both albums have a bit of a country sound to a few of the songs, which isn't usually my thing, but I guess I might just be bias 'cause he's from Millencolin. :P

I also have some live acoustic stuff from Sublime which sounds great. 👍

Ahhh! The Motels!! Wow I forgot all about them. My brother or sister had one of their records when I was a kid. It had Little Robbers on it so I suppose it was the Little Robbers LP. It was my favourite record at the time. Haven't heard them in ages and forgot all about them. I'll have to get hold of some of their tunes and take a trip down amnesia lane... So glad you mentioned them!

Ever listen to "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young?

Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here"

I've seen the dudes who used to play with Neil Young live (I think they actually went by the band name "Harvest Moon"). It was freaking awesome. They've been playing those songs for decades, so they have it down to every little upstroke or slide. Great stuff.

The Pink Floyd song I enjoy, but I really hate the rest of their music.

I'll check out the other stuff for sure though, thanks! I'll get back to you.

Do acoustic versions of previously electric songs count? I don't mean 'unplugged' in the sense of a concert, but Warrant (I think) released I Saw Red on acoustic guitar. A beautiful little piece right there.

I don't really like Warrant's I Saw Red, but in the aforementioned Bradley Nowell acoustic series, he does a really amazing version of Saw Red, the Sublime song.

Solid - I listened to all of the songs you suggested, and unfortunately not one I liked. They were all terribly 80s, mostly due to their ballad-like melodies and lame-o drum beats. Sorry.

I love Jack Johnson and Violent Femmes. I think Oasis is a great acoustic.... band. Mostly solo effort by Noel Gallagher, and casual listeners usually don't know about their b-sides.

As for some softer bands I enjoy: Train, Snow Patrol, Travis, Ocean Colour Scene, blur, KT Tunstall. How about the Beatles Savile Row recordings from their Anthology 3? Good stuff. :)
