Adding a Dislike/Disagree Button.

Yeah I guess it comes down to me being old maybe. :guilty:
"Like" does feel a bit trendy. :odd:

Really, the only reason I brought it up is because sometimes someone posts something heartfelt, or maybe not necessarily positive. I have nothing to add to it, but I appreciated the post & would like to be supportive & encouraging. But hitting the "like" button, might unintentionally come across as that I'm glad about something negative that was mentioned in part of the post. I don't want to unwittingly come across as "liking" the fact someone's cousin was in a car accident, "liking" the fact someone has a problem, or even as "liking" the fact someone's struggling to get gold on a license test for that matter. :/

I guess I'll just have to stick with quoting and then inserting a 👍 thumbs up, though, in those cases.
Maybe the 👍-only posts were much less than the +1-only posts. I've certainly not run any study analyzing GTP forum short-post statistics. :sly:

I dislike this thread.

:P

Isn't the 'like' button not part of the new software?
I'm not sure of your point. ?
I guess what some of us were discussing is that the button itself doesn't have to say "like" - it could say whatever... or it could just have a star on it for that matter... something very ambiguous.

For the record, I like the basic concept of the button itself. I wasn't criticizing its existence. Just expounding on my thoughts regarding it. 👍

I'm not making a point, I'm asking a question.
I guess I wasn't sure of the point you were asking about, particularly. Sorry.

If you aren't aware, the button itself was not there until the site was upgraded & overhauled to the new forum software, yes. In the past, we had no such thing as a like-button (by any other name etc.).

Does that answer the question?

There was the rep system, which is why some old posts show up as having likes. I learned this some time ago. :P

But not everyone could use the rep system before right?

Also, sometimes some old posts show up having likes because people are hitting the like button on old posts.

I know this because the date of the like shows up in my news feed, and I go & see that the post the person liked is like 10 years old in some cases.

Note: I blurred the content & peeps involved because all that's relevant is the dates.

It's fine as it is. If you like something, Like it.

If you don't like it, don't Like and then, if necessary, discuss why.

If you appreciate something, Like it.

If it feels... wrong to like a negative thing, don't Like it.

You guys are making it entirely too difficult.

Well that kind of defeated the purpose of wanting to keep the focus on the dates involved. :boggled:

EDIT: IE: I wasn't meaning to try & criticize anyone or the posts or the likes, I was just pointing out that people like old things in the present, and that accounts for the some of the likes on old posts.

Anyhow, I think it's a matter of taste, and like others have said, the trendy social media aspect of the thing & what some of us, right or wrong (from someone else's perspective), we would've liked to use the button for. Clearly if masses of people prefer liking stuff, I'm not suggesting y'all are wrong, just that I see it differently. Sorry if that's offensive. :(

Probably should have made it so blurry it wasn't readable then. Or redacted it. There was literally no magic involved - I just read it through the blur (and, with a familiarity with the Best Member Ever, instantly knew where it was).

TB
The fact you stated it was from ten years ago wasn't enough?
Apparently not:
I'm not saying I don't think people should be able to like posts from 5 or 10 years ago. I think they should be able to like stuff from 10 years ago.
I just think likes on posts that are say more than 5 years old, shouldn't maybe belong in the news feed.
Just sayin'.

My purpose was not to make it a secret or redact, just not to make it the focus point of the post.
Sorry if that wasn't clear.
If I meant to keep it secret, I would've made a greater effort or not referred to specific dates at all.

EDIT: Is there some other way to show someone else what showed up in MY news feed with the date? As far as I can see, you can't link to someone showing them what's in your news feed. Like the date on which someone you follow did a like.
Or is there some other way that it would show the date on which something was liked?

But by blurring it you made it the most interesting part

It's enough to say that people keep liking old posts and it shows up in your feed. There's not an awful lot we can do about that, but think of it this way - you get to read some old gold from GTP's past, like monster man

Anyone else have a burning desire to be @watermelonpunch 's friend for the sole purpose of liking old posts?
But it doesn't work that way anymore. There are no friends!
They would have to convince me to follow them for them to have me see them like stuff from the ancient days of gtp!
Old posts can still be 'liked'. Could be people that go through old threads.

Yes, there are people doing that. And they're all on my "following" list , so if you're a hankering for a walk down GTPlanet forum memory lane, just start following the people I follow, and watch the news feed turn into Nostalgia Blvd.

I don't use the Like button really, but it probably stops/reduces "+1 posts", which makes it worthwhile to me. People can show support and agreement without making the thread unnecessarily large.

The like button does the same thing though. I don't think changing the wording would make much difference. It just depends on context, if you get a like by answering someone's question, then it's basically a thanks. If it's in a discussion somewhere it means "I agree".
I would also rather be without buttons but I disagree that a "thanks" button is the same as a like button. A "thanks" button has a single purpose and can't be abused like the like button is currently being abused. If anyone says anything remotely critical of a certain company or game series there is often a rude response which gets a ton of likes. IMO this is encouraging bad behavior and discouraging free speech which wouldn't happen with a "thanks" button.

Speaking of buttons. Is there a simple way to block the like button and seeing the entire like info for a post? I already have the like alerts disabled.

That's exactly what I said and you got a 'like' and I didn't. :(

No need for a dislike button. If you don't like a post, don't hit the 'like' button and tell the poster in another post that you don't agree with his post. But do it according the AUP

:P

While you're at it, let's make it so once a particular number of dislikes is reached, the post is hid... like on Youtube. :P

It'll never happen but I recon it'd be useful on some occasions.

Oh yeah, we really want to be like Youtube. The thought and intelligence that goes into Youtube comments are something GTPlanet can only aspire to.
