Alfa Romeo Strikes a Chord With Tonale Concept

Of course I haven’t seen it in the metal, but I feel the CX-3 is a bit better in their similar styling. Love the Alfa’s wheels and steering wheel(again, similar to the Mazda).

The Mazda is definitely better. Nothing can even come close to Mazda's design currently.

Agree with you there KEEF, Mazdas do look good especially the MAZDA 3 and MAZDA 6, and the new CX-60 PHEV to rival this car.

“quickest, fastest, most powerful compact utility vehicle under $30,000.”

The base Hornet GT is also the one that Dodge describes with the above quote, complete with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It has an ample 265 horsepower (198 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 newton-meters) of torque, which is enough to scoot to 60 in a brisk 6.5 seconds. That’s as quick as a Mini Cooper S. And yes, it will start at under $30,000, although Dodge isn’t sharing much pricing info beyond that.

Perhaps the more forward-looking trim of the two is the Hornet R/T, which is only the second plug-in-hybrid to come out of Auburn Hills in a decade. The front axle turns via a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder plucked from the Jeep Renegade/Fiat 500X line, while a 90-kilowatt electric motor sits atop the rear axle. Between the two is a 15.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, which takes just 2.5 hours to recharge via a 7.4-kilowatt charging module and packs enough electrons to cover 35 miles when fully juiced.

The gas-electric combo works via a six-speed automatic transmission and features an integrated starter-generator for improved low-end response. Stretch the Hornet R/T’s legs and you’ll find 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, thanks to the powertrain’s combined 285 hp (213 kW) and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm). But you’ll only do that particular deed if you use PowerShot.

Pretty charming Alfa Romeo Tonale, honestly! I do agree the tail pipes are a bit weird in design, though.

As usual, another inoffensive, me-too compact crossover thingy. I thought I was looking at a Porsche Macan or some other clone from the rear, too.

Not a bad looking CUV, but I'm a bit disappointed. Stellantis could've set them apart in terms of styling, making the Hornet as a boxy crossover similar to the 2009 concept, but they didn't even try to differentiate it from the Tonale, they just said screw it and rolled with it. Basically all of the sheet metal is identical to the Tonale. This is some 90s GM-tier stuff. It's just a reminder of just how lazy the brands of Stellantis can be when they put their minds to it.

This is especially bad news for the Tonale itself, and the Alfa Romeo brand, who's sales have been nothing but poor since it has returned to the US market. Something tells me that the Tonale will be almost completely ignored and overshadowed by the cheaper rebadged Dodge version. It might not hurt Dodge's image or bottom line, but it's definitely going to impact Alfa Romeo negatively.

When I commented on the Alfa Romeo Tonale, there were already posts about the Dodge Hornet. So let me speak up on the Hornet. First of all, I am not expecting this Hornet to pay homage to the Hudson Hornet or win in the "Daytona USA" series (Dodge Hornet High-Class?). I tend to be someone to find beauty in simplicity or even "boring" or "bland." To that end, the Dodge Hornet is pretty stylish to me. I think the Alfa Romeo Tonale looks better, though. I would like a little more meanness and character up front to the Dodge Hornet, but not to the overaggressive level of Toyota or Lexus styling of late. I am not entirely intrigued about the Dodge Hornet, but it is quite nice overall.

Alfa Romeo should probably be glad they were tasked with building a car that other brands in the company portfolio can utilize instead of being immediately shut down like they probably should have been as soon as the ink on the Peugeot merger was dry.

It's also pretty petulant on their part to dismiss it as a "compliance car" when maybe Stellantis actually wants to get a return on their investment in an Alfa Romeo model this time. Dodge claims they have 14,000 preorders for the Hornet already. Was the Tonale even going to sell 14,000 cars total in the US?

I doubt that. Alfa Romeo only sold less than 18k vehicles in the US last year, roughly 55% of them being Stelvios. There's nothing to suggest that an arguably worse SUV that's clearly a rebadged Dodge even to non "car people" will somehow fare better.

Ultimately, Alfa Romeo's core problem is not that their vehicles are ugly, poor quality, or a bad value. It's that the brand does not have enough consistent recognition to warrant strong enough sales. There are 80 Alfa Romeo dealerships in the US, most of which are in metropolitan areas. Alfa Romeo's re-entrance in the US, starting with two very low-volume sports cars years before a sedan or CUV was part of the lineup, seemed quite arbitrary and pointless. It's not like Alfa Romeo is tapping into a meaningful unfilled void by being "the Italian BMW". Even if it's cars were twice as good as they are now, I cannot see Alfa Romeo being a big player in the ever-crowded entry level luxury segment in the near future.

Starting MSRP: $30,590

I Guess Chrysler forgot their own memo.

And I'm unable to find any combination available that makes it look halfway decent.
