HONDA 'FLICK'
Honda are a tad excited about the new Accord Estate. It's got a tailgate that you can open and close at the press of a button. Perfect for knocking over passers by as you sup a pint in the beer garden.
A folding seat and an opening tailgate aren't much to get excited about normally. Not true According to Honda. They're dancing around like frogs on a griddle currently with the news that their new Accord Tourer will feature a 'world-first', 'one-motion' fold flat rear seat and a power tailgate that can be fully opened and closed at the press of a button.
Apparently their 60:40 split rear seats offer a further quantum leap forward in terms of everyday, easy-to-use practicality. Pull the seat back lever and the head restraints flip forward as the seat base rises into a vertical position. The seat back then folds totally flat, in one simple movement, with the seat integrated seatbelts ensuring minimum inconvenience. It's neat but calm your excitement Honday, it's no Nobel prize winner.
Having dealt with the load floor, Hondas next design innovation was an power-operated tailgate. Targeted at retired majors who barely have the will to live let alone lift a tailgate, the system is operated by the key fob or via a switch on the lower edge of the tailgate. It will be particularly handy when legging it across a rainy supermarket car park or perhaps for ram raids?
The new Accord Tourer will go on sale first in Japan this autumn (as the Accord Wagon) and will be available in Britain from the spring of 2003.
