Am I being a jerk?

hey spy, i do exactly the same thing. i figure if a driver wants to run around the track by himself, he will just do time trials or freerun. it would seem that joining a race implies a desire to be on the track amongst other cars, so i dont reckon the slower drivers feel any different than i do about wanting to drive together.

a good point was made about some people racing for credits- but when they are being faced with the prospect of finishing 2nd instead of 1st, its not such a bad deal as compared to 12th instead of 1st. :)

I'm glad when people wait for me when no one else is near and when that person is at the same level. If someone is so good I'm nowhere near his level, I think he shouldn't keep hanging around me, since it will only slow me down more!

The except was last time with RudiRaser. I was driving the Focus, and he was in the Teg. Normally he's already faster, but with me in a slower car I'm obviously no match. So this case I appreciated his wait (couldn't really tell how much he held back). Keeping up with his Teg was a victory on its own for me.

I hardly ever wait myself, even if I'm in front by more than a minute. I use those laps as freelaps to improve my laptimes.

The other day I was in a race at Fuji. There were only two cars and I started off and did the first two laps at full tilt. The other guy was then some 10 seconds behind. On the third lap I stopped and waited just after the first turn, he passed me and before I had accelerated up to speed he was two seconds ahead. He then suddenly transformed into something completely else and try as I might I could not close the gap for the rest of the race. I felt like I had been hustled.

You are being a jerk, maybe the guy had a spin or two and would rather try catch up to you than inherit the lead. In the F2007 race sometimes you meet someone who is horribly bad, my goal is to then lap them as much as possible, to make them leave early.

However if they stay the whole race I give them the win.

Wait, I am a jerk, and you try and lap someone, who is bad, as many times as possible to try and make them leave..... and your not? K.

You can't complain if you start a thread asking if you're a jerk and someone says yes :)

On a personal note, I'm not fast but I try my hardest to get faster and if someone starts messing about dropping behind me and so on when they are clearly faster than me then I think I'd call him rather more than a jerk. :)

No, you're not being a jerk. You act out of your good hart (you're racing online so the other person doesn't know your true intentions) and try to make the race as interested as possible for both parties but I have to agree with these remarks:

+1

Some people get frustrated very quickly and turn into punters. Like said, some people could concider your action as being patronising and act upon that in a negative way. If you're faster, stay in the lead but not too far. Give the other person the chance to catch you without it showing it too much.

You can always leave to game before you start to race if you encounter these situations again and avoid awkward situations.

:)

I agree with this. When am the fastest i try to show my line and technique so maybe they will learn. I do that because when i'm behind i always study and try the other guys lines. You can learn alot by doing this. It has helped me on all tracks i race.

To be honest, I don't think your been a jerk but if your winning by so much each time try an unusual car, I know everyone loves the clio in the 550 RWD but come on please have a bit of variety, I must have joined at least 3 games last night where EVERYONE was in a clio apart from about 3 people. No offense to anyone who likes the car but still its boring when Im trying to use something unusual like a 350Z instead of my NSX-R which is probably only just a tad slower than a clio and I can beat the clios with it. It just seems really boring racing against 11 people I know its virtually physically impossible to beat.

Maybe this is not really the answer you were looking for but I got a bit carried away sorry.

I was speaking of the 650 race, the the thought rings true. Last night I was starting to play with other cars to bring in.

To the OP, this is a great thread. It has really made me think how I drive with others.
I use to wait for slower drivers. Its more fun to race with someone than doing a time trial hot lap.
Then I got a PM telling me that I was an A-hole and that he didn't need my pity.
That totally changed how I drive now.
Screw waiting on people. Drive like your pants are on fire. You will get the occasional quitter, but thats better than taking a Sunday drive on the track, stopping to smell the flowers while they pull themselves out of the sand on every corner.

I have my own theory about this.

Whenever i'm in the front i always drive as fast as the guy behind me. I maintain a gap of approx. 2sec. so as to not get in a position that i could be pushed off the track.
This gives the guy behind me the impression that he could win it and in thinking that he won't just disconnect, he will keep pushing to try and catch up with me. I've been racing like this for years, ever since the first TOCA Race Driver. During my time with those games i saw many people just quit the race and join another race as soon as they realized that they were too slow.

Using this strategy however does require you to be pretty familliar with the track so as to not make any mistakes.

ps.
The above doesn't apply when i encounter fast drivers that i've met before or GTP drivers. In this scenario i just try to get the hell away as quickly as i possibly can. Who knows how fast they might be hehe.
