I didn't know where else to stick this (maybe the meme thread would have been better, I honestly don't know) but a friend of mine is just...hilariously dumb when it comes to certain things. And seeing where I am, you can safely guess where this is going.
As we're talking about the inevitable price hike of things, he lets out a remark that the tariffs could result in the collapse of certain companies, which is exactly what Trump wants or hopes for. He (Trump) feels we've been getting the short end of the stick, hence the imposed taxes. And if it works out how he (again, Trump) hopes, he'll be lauded as a hero, otherwise he'll be responsible for another depression.
I changed the subject so fast because I gazed at the words for several minutes with my mouth agape, and I didn't want to call him a stupid [expletive deleted] for believing that ridiculous [expletive deleted]. Today, he mentions it again, saying Trump just threatened China about backing off in the next 24 hours or something. I, of course, didn't say anything but in my mind I thought to myself "Wtf is this dipwad threatening China with?"
On the one hand I'm glad I don't follow politics closely or with any sort of regularity because I'd drive myself insane, but at the same time...even I'm not this much of an ignorant ass.

Well I didn't expect SCOTUS to come out and say that due process is a right but for those the government says are in the country illegally.
Alas I also didn't expect the Court to deflect so spectacularly as to simply say that the government must give notice of intent to deport at detention and give those detained the opportunity to petition for judicial review by individual habeas suit, basically a lawsuit challenging the legality of their detention and intent to deport.

Seriously though, I live with a conspiracy theorist who is all too eager to tell you how the government uses taxes to oppress society, that they increase taxes the more you make, to stop you being able to become rich enough to challenge them, just to keep you under their thumb!
To me, it seems that conspiracy theorists were largely content to talk to other theorists on private forums, tucked away in the dark corners of the internets, but when COVID-19 broke, all of a sudden theories started popping up everywhere, theorists seemed to start feeling recognised, as if people suddenly believed them. Now, you can't have a mundane news story without someone trying to tell you the hidden truth that only they're able to perceive, and would happily explain it to you!
The reported facts in the news just can't be true because they're too simple, there must be something else, something hidden that they don't want you to know. Find that and you'll find the real truth!
P.S. Donald Trump isn't real. It's Richard Nixon wearing a skin-suit of some long dead obese guy. They spray the skin-suit orange to hide the decay, and the hair is stapled in place, but you can tell so because it looks like it's barely holding on.

There is no universe in which countries like Madagascar or Lesotho or other poor countries will ever have the level of balanced trade that Trump would find acceptable. How much you want to bet that nations like these with zero hope of balanced trade with the US, even if they had zero tariffs, will be required to pay a "subscription fee" to access US markets going forward, on the order of 1-5% of their GDP? It's just dystopian enough for it to make sense in the age of DJT 2.0.

Of course, this comes after confirmation that the EU offered the Trump administration a "Zero for Zero" tariff deal two weeks ago, but Trump turned it down - on the basis of correcting a trade imbalance that Trump personally believes is unfair; and yet, his corrective measures are likely (if not certain) to do far more damage than any imbalances that Trump feels the need to correct.

My LinkedIn feed is filled with people who firmly believe that the US is being taken advantage of and therefore the tariffs are valid and in some cases should be even higher because the US is the real victim there. Quite a few people even said that they feel very insulted by the fact that other countries are now saying they are unsure about doing business with the US because they can't trust the US anymore.
I've got to ask, how can the country with the biggest and richest economy in the world be considered a victim when they are the one who hold all the power, and have massive influence on other countries' economy?

Slightly further. Trump is still proclaiming America was at its peak during the late 1800s-early 1900s just because tariffs were wildly used & income tax wasn't re-established yet.
Don't bother pointing out all the demographic injustice or that even back then, they knew tariffs were a tax on American consumers; the cult doesn't care b/c they still think tariffs work the way Donny tells them they do.
That won't bother them. If anything, they'll use it as a sign of how much they love their Bronze idol b/c they willing spent more.
