Anonymous, which is presumably a bunch of teenagers bored out of their mind, are now targeting Facebook. On November the 5th, they claim they will shut it down because they believe Facebook is selling people's information to governments. Regardless of whether they are right or not, they probably won't back down. Although their video threats can only be described as cheezy and all, they really do mean business. (According to their record)

I don't see this happening given the massive scale and protection Facebook has (Plus the fact that it is now pre-warned).

Here's a list of previous attacks Anonymous launched. (Some of which were quite successful) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_(group)

Would get my vote (just to see everyone panic). The old fashioned way of meeting people down the pub or ringing them up to speak to them, is quickly becoming forgotten.

They should do their research and really find out if this is happening or not. Zuckerberg was (is) a hacker himself, and supports the idea of a free and open internet just like the Anon guys do, and most of us. I don't know who's in charge of FB anymore, but I think it's a bad idea to battle against people who are in your own camp. There quabbles with Google have been questionable as well, though I honestly don't remember what it was all about.

Haha.
Why tell people what they are going to do?

"Hey dude, take this kevlar vest and wear it, cause I'm gonna try and shoot you later.
Oh... and make sure you hire plenty of armed bodyguards"

I think I want to be a hitman. Sounds fun.

I wouldn't underestimate Anonymous, especially given the PSN outage that ended about 12 weeks ago.

The guys responsible didn't boast and give warnings and dates though did they?

Facebook have plenty of time to counter their actions.

Well, if on November 5th we see groups of panicky people taking to the streets and running in circles shouting things like "OMGZ I don't know if my friend has had her bowel movement!" and "I didn't know it's your birthday, the computer didn't tell me!" we'll know they've done it.

I'm not sure how Facebook will react against the server attacks carried out by Anonymous and clear out the interventions from an external intruder in connection, even provided with massive protection, considering some of the server attacks went successful I don't think Facebook will be able to completely retain themselves safe.

dhandes

This, I kinda hope they succeed

I honestly hope they do succeed. I'd say they announced it ahead of time as a challenge to fb to get their servers locked down extra good to see if they can still get through. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens.

I'm guessing the very few people left remaining on MySpace will be very smug in the event of a FB shutdown.

Oh noez, they're shutting down Facebook! For all of a few hours, if that. Whoever now owns Facebook has more than enough money to hire smarter and better hackers than them.

They're just a bunch of guys that keep hacking everyone, didn't they threaten to hack Blackberry if they gave police information about rioters? Oh that was Team Poison

I wouldn't be so sure. These are supposedly the same people who hacked the PSN (Although no one will never really know for certain). They definitely know what they're doing.

I'm sure even they would have their prices. If not, there's easily someone out there who does. From what I've been told the PSN wasn't even that difficult a hack due to the way Sony ran their security systems.

And I can't imagine Facebook's any harder. The PSN holds credit card and account info. Facebook has your email, and that's it (Because you may lie about anything else you put out). In fact, four Facebook friends of mine have had to delete their account due to people hacking them.

There is no known way to hack profiles, either they were tricked into giving their login details into a false facebook site or they used poor passwords. Or they said nasty things to their friends then wanted to cover it up by saying they were "hacked".

Anyway I'm looking forward to Nov 5th, it should be lulzy.

I've chatted with some Anonymous members on a IRC a couple weeks ago, they didn't hack PSN. Also if you go to Anonymous's official website there's a document stating they didn't do it.

I have a bad feeling that Sony still hasn't fully secured their systems from external threats to this day. :/
You don't have to be a tech expert to understand at some point these hackers are going to do something and not cover up their tracks or do a horrible job at getting rid of the evidence that they illegally entered servers. At some point, the major hackers in the group will get arrested and the only thing they'll be doing is being a bit*h in a prison.

I do hate Facebook, and I do see this becoming true(even for a few days or even a week), but their motivations are weak, FB provides all kinds of information from anybody to anybody, so it hardly matters if it gets hack.

However the internet chaos will be worth of seeing, also November the fifth, how ironic, looking forward to it though, maybe they should follow Luzsec ideologies, and bring a huge luz for everyone.

This will also create some conspiracies(like:it was Google to promote plus), That would be worth of seeing as well.

I dont mind them shutting down facebook. People have been to addicted to facebook lately, it has become a sickness. I dont use facebook, and i dont think some ones life are going to get ruined either. While i dont support criminal things, i dont give a rats toe if anonomus shuts down facebook. I will just sit down and laugh....

That's what I meant by "hacked". I suppose it isn't really hacking.

If they really wanted to shut Facebook down for good, they wouldn't tell everyone about it three months in advance.

👍 They have their work cut out for them, Sony didn't know it was coming and it was only a temporary annoyance (server-wise, the public issue was a little beyond minor), but Facebook is likely harder to shut down due to the sheer size of it and they have notice. I don't expect problems.

Don't care if they do or don't. At least it will help my mom get through a show without backing it up every 3 minutes because she's got a new FB message.

I really don't care what happens to FB after this point.
