Another BMW knock off - Toyota Camry

Its not that the tC is a bad car, but so many of the pieces beneath it are out of the Camry that it really hinders how great the car coulda/wolda/shoulda been.

If the tC ever had any direct competition, it mostly comes in the form of the Chevrolet Cobalt SS (without the Supercharger), with 171HP and a 5-speed manual... Its pretty plain to see that the Chevy performs better and has a better list of standard equipment for a much lower price.

I don't really see BMW looks to say it's a BMW knockoff. Blazin made this thread, and when we talked about the Scion tC, he said it looks too much like a Volvo.

To me in terms of this car, I don't see too much to ellicit this being a BMW rip-off. Again, it's just me. Oh and by the way, if this was a BMW rip-off, it would get controversy for looking too much like something else. I don't think Chris Bangle (I didn't know he was American) quit BMW and works for Toyota, last I checked.

If you could combine the Skyline GTR front, with the Celicas overall body shape, and the Pontiac G6's rear end... You have the Scion tC!

Well, have you seen the tail-end of the new Toyota Avalon? It's got a bit of the BMW hump-back trunk goin' on there... :sly:

I do see little bit of everything in there. BMW(just on that trunk), Mazda, Avalon, Lexus. I think I've seen those head&tail lights on Pontiac or Acura? Anyways, I think kyle hit the nail on the head. Camry owners didn't buy their cars for its' looks. I think the car is hideous, but it's probably going to dominate the market....... again. :guilty:

WTF is wrong with Toyota?? They keep this **** up and their "reliability" label isn't gonna help them and they'll end up like GM (well, ok maybe not that bad :dopey: ). A Yaris 4dr. plus they still have the Corolla. :odd:

Carl.
...or a Mazda rip-off, looking at the front end.

yep...

I declared this car the ugliest car of 2006, couple of months ago. I still have yet to see too many of them on the streets, but now I'm not so sure. In some of the commercials, they have just looked drop-dead gorgeous!. Juries still out on this car for me, but it certainly isn't ugliest for me anymore.

Has anyone seen the Lexus ES version of this car? Looks amazing! At first, I thought I was watching a GS commercial(another car I don't like that much) thinking, GS looks better than I thought....... then they showed the front end of the car that was clearly different from GS. I can't wait to see this one of the road.

...A friend of my Mother's just bought an '07 Camry LE, and it is one ugly little bugger. Not only is it ugly, it is boring as well. The only thing exciting about her car is the electric blue paint, thats about it.

I just cant imagine why anyone would want to buy one, and I think Toyota is seeing the same problem, as I havent seen many on the road yet either.

The same reason why anyone would want to get an SUV, an MPV or a sedan like sonata.

I'd have to say you are completely wrong about this. 👎

First off, the 170hp Cobalt is an SS, just not the supercharged top of the line SS. Also, that 170hp Cobalt with the options of the Tc starts at over 17K (as the LT cost atleast 17K and is still less than the lowest level SS).

Trust me, I just went though all of this with the actual dealer... I'm sure you saw my "wreck my car, have little money" thread. I Almost bought a 2-door LT Cobalt until it turned out that Chevy was putting "spin" on their product's price and quality. :ouch:

Bottom line: The comprable Chevy Cobalt is not cheaper and does not have a better list of standard equipment. I learned it first hand in the real world. :(
(as I did want a Cobalt until I found out the truth)

However, on a comparison of specs, these two definately compete with one-another... 2900lbs. Tc vs 3000lbs. Cobalt, both at roughly 170hp. 👍 :sly:

On a different note...

That's about the best post I've ever seen you make. How damn true! And at this point, the Celica doesn't even deserve to be called a sports car. It's just a Corolla in drag. 200hp FWD Celica vs. 180hp AWD Corolla/Matrix at the same weight? Boo. To both.
I disagree with this comment as well.
First off, the Celica GT-S weighed 2500lbs and the Corolla XR-S weighs 2670lbs. That's a considerable difference when you're pushing the same power (and making the mistake of claiming the same weight).

Also, the Celica and Corolla do not deserve to be put down on as you are doing. Both of them are nice cars and compare well with the competition. Heck, with my case, the Corolla S weighs only 2615lbs with an automatic transmission where-as the Comprable Civic weighs 2805. Even with the extra power of the Civic the Corolla comes out with a similar (but not as good) pwr, a better twr, and less weight for excellent braking and handling.

Don't get me wrong, the Civic is an excellent vehicle and IMO on a different level than the Corolla (as you can buy one for over 19,000 and still be only at the top of the normal line-up and not in the "Si" range).

However, in this case, with your comments niky, I am going to have to say they are more about a Bias against Toyota and the Celica/ Corolla/ Tc than anything else.

Of course, most of this is just my opinion so please take it that way (except the figures regarding weight, torque, and power, which are not opinion).

My opinion regarding a bottom line for all of this:
This all comes down to personal prefference.
There are plenty of FF coupes and sedans out there and most of them are very, VERY, similar. The choice of which one is "best" usually comes down to which one is your "favorite."

I try to keep that in mind and admit to myself that I am a Toyota fan and just like how so many other people do not like Toyota, my personal prefference drives many of my comments.

In my opinion, the new Camry is ugly but the Camry has always been a nice car. Adding more power to an already nice car is always a good thing. Since the Camry was never meant to be a turner-burner then it is ok to not have a "type R" mentality.

However, to apply a negative attitude to all of Toyotas products regardless of how good or bad they are is simply foolish. Just like many other companies, Toyota has good attributes and bad attributes.
Focus on what you would like, but please don't act like the Camry was ever meant to be a sports car or that the most recent Celica GT-S is a bad FF sports coupe.

You know, we could have this same tone in a conversation about Honda, the heavy Civic, and the recently announced death of the RSX but I don't see enough Honda Haters in this forum to do so. :ouch:

I don't hate Honda in any way but I can easily see the similarities of the situations as well as the rediculus bias required for those who would like to argue otherwise.

Personal prefference my friends, that's what most of this is and I hope all of you can be adult enough to admit that. 👍

True enough... Man, this thread is so... old.

Despite the things I don't like about the Camry, I'll have to admit it's a decent car, and a very good buy if you're not the motoring type.

The Corolla, too. Even if it's not as sharp handling as a Honda or Mazda, it's got a good suspension, stable handling, and it's light and peppy. It's also aging quite well, and even this close to retirement, looks modern. Hey, I did say in that other thread that I liked your choice of car.

Maybe my comment was uncalled for... spirit of the Toyota-bashing moment I suppose... ...but I really do think that Toyota went at it all wrong with the Celica and Corolla... give the Corolla some of the Celica's styling... pimp it up a bit (although, admittedly, the current Corolla, despite getting on in years, is a more handsome and distinctive car than Corollas of old)... Have a two door version or a three door hatchback with the top of the line engine available, maybe even a supercharger, and with AWD.

Oh, Toyota... you remembered! 👍

But... what are the chances you'll ever see that in the US?

That's a Corolla, huh? Very impressive. 👍 With that much horsepower, does it really get 39 mpg on highway? I'm thinking they probably meant 29 mpg.

I can't say with regard to specs what exactly that corolla can do.
However, I can speculate about getting it in the states. :P

My guess, no.
But is it possible? Yes.
If the Euro crowd buys up all 250 of them and toyota makes more (selling more over there) then there is a chance of a US release (limit scale similar to the Civic Si I would guess).

My gut says no but my buisness sense says maybe.
We will just have to wait and see where this new market of tuned imports leads Toyota. :)

Btw, like I said, I can only guess and that is partly because the car hasn't been released yet (due out in europe this november).

Later.

As for 39 mpg... that's imperial... it works out to... (Excel is my friend...) 32+ mpg American.
