Any thought on the recent sniper attacks?

This idiot with the rifle has to be within about 300-400 yards of his targets.
Taking bullet drop into account, and a target must be stationary for about a full second for a hit at that distance, this joker is a very good shot.
A .223 is not a big bullet, and in the M-16 variants the rifling is such 1 turn in 16 inches) that the spin is supposed to carry a round thru a target. It's designed to wound so two guys have to care for their comrade instead of returning fire.
With the amount of damage mentioned by duo17. The rifle has to be either a very early M-16 with the tighter rifling (1 turn in 14 inches) or a different weapon all together.
150 yards is a more likely distance, due to the fact that with a bullet speed of approx. 1500 fps a 450 ft shot gives a target no time to move, and increases the chance of a one shot kill.

This dude is proving to be an organized thinker, and patient enough to wait for a shot. He is probably a sociopath. His pattern is not disorganized enough for a "garden variety" psycho.

Either way, I hope someone stops this guy very soon.

There was a great comment at fark.com that with the introduction of the military the sniper had now 'reached six stars'.

I always thought the AK's (47 and 74) were made to loose tolerances to be utterly reliable in any climate or environment. I think that they also only come in some .30 cal variant, not .223.
Those loose tolerances add up to poor accuracy. I don't think, that without a lot of work an AK would reliable shoot to 1 MOA.

In other words, If the authourities are saying that the bullets are .223s and the gun is and AK variant, they are trying to manipulate the press, and not let out as much as they know.
