Hey guys,

First of all, a merry Christmas to all of you!

My sister has been having issues with her Apple TV for about a month now: It won't work.

When it is connected to the TV, the screen indicates that the Apple TV needs to be connected to iTunes. And so, we heed its call and act accordingly. However, once connected to the computer, nothing happens. I've tried connecting iPods and iPhones and all devices are being properly recognized by iTunes, but not Apple TV. I've updated iTunes to the latest version, but to no avail.

So in order to reset my Apple TV for it to work, I need to reset it in iTunes. But iTunes won't recognize the device.

What gives?

The device is only 2 months old, so it puzzles me how it after a month would suddenly stop working. Unless Apple really has become so poor in quality.

Does it allow you control from the remote at all? Have you tried holding down Menu and Down on the remote for six seconds, and then release when you see the indicator light on the Apple TV blink rapidly?

I assume that you've also looked for the Apple TV in the drop down menu in iTunes when hooked up to power and the computer via USB. If it's still not recognizing and you don't have another computer to try it on, you should take it into an Apple Store to have them reset it for you.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with an Apple TV. I have 2nd and 3rd gen models and both have worked flawlessly for years.

from Apple...

Reset Apple TV by doing one of the following:

  • Hold down both Menu and Down on the Apple Remote until the Apple TV status light blinks rapidly.

  • Disconnect Apple TV from the power outlet, wait about five seconds, and then reconnect it.
Not sure if it will help, but if it allows access without heading to iTunes the I guess it's progress. It sounds like it was mid install of a software update and it was turned off corrupting the install, when iTunes tried to find the device it can't because of the corrupted files.

Yea, sounds like you might need to do a DFU restore on it. I got an Apple TV for free because the previous owner thought he had bricked it with jailbreaking.
