Sigh...

This kind of a thing only happens in Muslim world....
Not really... Israel (the polar opposite to the 'Muslim' world) has a very similar problem... attempt to find the middle ground (i.e. be a moderate) and you get slammed for being anti-Israeli (or the infamous and derogatory 'self-hating Jew') I think this sort of thing happens all the time - it's just a question of not giving up and not allowing the preachers of hate to have the final word...

I see what your getting at, but I still don't really agree - look at the US, especially during the cold war, but even still today - you're un-American if you don't support the war on terror...Democrats and Liberals branded as traitors for not supporting George Bush...?

What's really at issue here (and, admittedly is rife within Muslim countries) is the fact that the people in positions of power (and in the case of Muslim countries, people in positions of religious authority - i.e. clerics/imams etc.) are unwilling to accommodate the views of those around them, listen to their electorate (if they even have one) and brand anyone who disagrees with them 'traitors', (or heretics, infidels, liberals, whatever...) I guess it goes on all the time, esp. in the Muslim world, but by no means exclusively...
