ARCAT Race III : GT3 License S-6

This week we'll be taking a trip back to the days of GT3. But don't be confused, we are still running it on GT4. ;)
For those who never played it or don't remember, this is a great combo!

Comments

This is the combo that caused me to go from despising Laguna Seca to making it my favorite road course on the game. I'll be running a lot of laps on this one, so you guys better get busy. :D

Preview of Coming Attractions

Well, the cat's out of the bag now. Corvette at Seattle, but you don't know the tires, HP or direction yet. :sly:

Here's the best YouTube I could find of the License Test that inspired this week's combo. 👍

OK - Congrats to jmgyro for a fantastic win. A hat trick for him, as well as stidriver in the second spot this week. 👍

3rd place is the mortals' only hope at a podium, some guy named EDK took it this week. :dopey:

I know this one wasn't easy, but thanks for putting up with it and turning in times. 👍

Some tight racing for the series to date, the bonus points and even the warmup race could come into play. jmgyro and stidriver have strong holds on first and second, but the 3rd spot is up for grabs, with tight races almost all the way through the field. On to the final stretch at Seattle!!

Kevin

270 gearing

18.687 (18.510)
36.378
55.529 (55.4)

Seen slightly faster splits, but I figure 54.x is at T3 at least since you can hold a lot of speed uphill.

same gearing

18.651 (18.510)
36.295 (35.981)
55.195 (54.5?)

Had a few 54.93x, but with either bad endings or dirty. And picked up .2 on my best ending with this 55.195. .6 overall.

Big difference is the turn after T2 can be held at 105~ or more instead of previously at 93, and found slightly quicker on each turn, although putting everyone together isn't possible for me.

If I recall correctly, this was also a test in GT2 as well :) Anyone care to double check my memory?

I never played it, so I had no idea.

I think that makes this one even more compelling. 👍

EDIT: 💡 Jerome, since you brought this up, I'd like to volunteer you to make a video of this week's winner. So that we can line all 3 of these up side by side by side to show the differences between the iterations of the game. I think it would be cool, at least. :dopey:

Cool concept. 👍 A couple things:

First, your run continues, EDK. WRS Week 19

Second, EDK, I recommend reading this if you haven't seen it. Post #69 on. WRS Week 76

Third, a reminder to everyone: For lack of a better term, the game "screws up" when you go too far inside on the start-finish straightaway, where the pit-lane exit road is. If you stray too far past that white line, your splits won't have the blue or red comparisons to your best lap pop up and the replay will be "broken".

I personally don't like this combo much - it's very unforgiving and I've never liked Laguna. I'm on 55.3xx but don't have anything I'm satisfied with. Have fun, all. 👍

Well, I didn't have any choice on that one, did I? ;) Was bound to pick that combo at some point, these 4 cars with this track in the mix. The concept is obviously not entirely new, but that was 2 years ago, so I suppose I can be forgiven. I swear, I imagined that this series was all my idea. :dopey:

EDITED my comments here, since it turns out I read too fast. This was apparently a car issue, not a track issue. My second place finish to a PAL driver in D3 for Week119 WRS in this car proves that this cannot be the case. ;) Personally, I think MadMax86 needs a handicap anyhow. :sly:

Thanks for that. I was at a loss for what to put in the comments last night, you filled it in nicely. :)

Please, everyone. Don't let this intimidate you. Laguna punishes you for late braking and the varying angles on the corners are a challenge to get right. But I believe that just adds to the charm. 👍

Will get a leaderboard going soon, After I have a chance to prepare Race II results.

Ah, much better, and enjoying it more now that I've found my braking points. I got under my temporary goal, although it certainly wasn't a perfect lap. I'm sure I can reach another goal relatively easily. :sly: The third sector is the real test this week. 270 gears.

18.675 (near my best but can be significantly better)
36.338 (never look at this one :dopey:)
55.061 (best so far)

Test session splits. I spent a few more laps on this test than I normally would. ;)

19.046
37.049
56.178

Leaderboard initiated. 👍

I newer questionised differences differences between NTSC and PAL before,
but it's kind a sad that if I drive at my best I can still get beaten by
huge margin.

My best time
from back then on GT2 Licence S-7 is still 1.13.3xx

thought here comes my 1st 2nd plits:

T1 19.365 T1 18.823
T2 37.585 T2 36.879
T3 57.739 T3 56.019

If there is a difference I will just have to push it to the limits :D

I would not go assuming that. This is an age old debate that happened to come up on one week with one car, and involved a coupe of big egos to boot.

I was merely attempting to make light with my statement above. And look, you've already passed me. ;)

Ah, I see. I'll take back what I wrote about NTSC vs PAL differences.
(thought editing it would be a shame :D)

And yep, passed you by .150 , but with this car
it's only like one car lenght. :dopey:

by the way, I need to ask this: is the corkscrew supposed to
be driven using black asfalt or is it allowed to cut thru the sand colored asfalt/cement part?

Sounds fine to me :) Glad to see I'm not crazy and it was in GTII. I can try doing all three side by side at once in one video (though I haven't ever tried but want to) and it would be cool when we get Laguna in GT5 to do a quad view of all of them as a little progression tribute 👍 If I can't make them all on one screen (which may be the case :S) I'll still do this week's replay.

The right rumble is part of the track. The concrete drainage flow is NOT part of the track. So at least 2 wheels on or vertically in line with tarmac or rumble.

Also, I'll add one more thing that came up in WRS 134. No using the pit lane in the first hairpin to shortcut the track.

I'll add a special comments section to the original race post to address these issues.

Thanks

First try...not that great...

This combo IS very unforgiven!!!
But it only adds to the goal!!! :)

I like you attitude. :sly: You can't miss any braking points or any turn in points. The only latitude you have is that the car, although heavy, doesn't mind being tossed around a little. I also find that throttle control on exit can really be your fried in correcting pre-corner mistakes. My test laps were actually quite sloppy, but I drove the car after the other 3. And if you want to know how nice I was to you, try the other cars here. ;)

New splits for me tonight, I picked up 0.6 at the line. :)

19.063 / 37.190 / 55.951

Your turn, Mad Max. :mischievous:

Second run @ 380

18.893/36.725/56.431

:grumpy: just saw I wont move on the standings! :grumpy:

I guess I'll go down to jmgyro's gear @ 270 💡

Never really been a fan of that corkscrew turn.. but I AM a fan of this car 👍

First run with stock gearing:

19.420
37.095
57.231

The laps go by quick... should get some more runs in over the weekend!

Second run @ 380

I'm using 290 - 270 was a little snappy for me. I tried the higher gears with 5th, but I find the car does like to have a little engine braking entering some of the tighter turns.

Seems that most of the time lately, I drive better with gears that are not quite maxing out on the front straight of tracks. Last week in the GT was an exception, but even the WRS with the Suby was weird. I didn't win or anything, but I was 4th with totally different gears than almost every other driver. Bizarre.

Got you guys updated on the board. 👍

Hopefully have time for this on Sunday? :nervous:

Jerome

Ran this for the first time last night

18.985
36.784
56.651

Not too bad through T2 - still need to work on the second half of the lap

Hi Kevin,

Following the MX-5 Cup debacle, please don't shut down this series if I point out a tiny typo :P , but you've got Jake listed with stidriver's splits in the leaderboard!

Having my first chance of the week to go ahead and run this combo, and have just blown a 55.8xx at T3. :grumpy:

Best clean lap so far has:

T1 19.049
T2 37.025
T3 56.142

Going to set myself a target of shaving another 0.5s off my laptime by the deadline.

Oops, did that last night after a few Friday night beers. No more Leaderboard updating under the influence for me. :dopey: All sorted.

And next time, can you point out my errors in a PM so as to not publicly shame me? ;)

Glad to have you in here and running. 👍
