Socks are quite simply the most uninspired gift ever.

They're usually only recieved from distant family members like aunties, grandmothers, etc, and typically recieved with a forced smile and a "Thank you..."

Despite this, are they actually a bad gift idea? I mean, I'd personally never give anyone mere socks for Christmas, but I gotta admit, running out of socks is quite the inconvenience, there have been some instances where I've wished I had some more... :scared:

The only people I've ever met that didn't like socks as a present still lived with their parents. Once you're out on your own you appreciate socks and underwear.
Yeah, I get that. I'm in my final year of high school now, and I don't need a uniform anymore, so new clothes were pretty up there on my wishlist... Oh no, wishing for clothes on Christmas?! Crap, I'm getting old!

Plain black or white socks for Christmas is a definite no-no, but there a ton of really cool socks with graphics on them that people just cant get enough of. Take the Hoonigan "Tire Slayer" socks for example!

You sir, have a good point! See, I only got plain single colour socks. :grumpy:
But I wouldn't be angry at a pair of Tyre Slayers! :sly:

Everybody needs socks. I wish for gifted socks but sadly I have to buy my own. :indiff:

I am just about to drop the bomb on 24 pairs of neon trainer socks for £12. :D

The thread title & the poll question being complete opposites threw me a bit there. Fortunately I was allowed to change my vote.

I don't mind socks I got some this year. I get some every year so just when the ones from last year are starting to get holes in them I get a whole new batch for the next year.

I don't think I've ever bought socks (other than sport specific socks) thanks to getting yearly supplies at Christmas in gift form.

Who would love socks as gifts? I'd be disappointed if I didn't get any.

I may not celebrate xmas, but I always would accept some nice socks. Not just plain black, but you know with simple patterns or something. Then again, I just like socks...

I got socks when I was a kid and I get socks as a dad; it's not the gift you get but the fact that you've been considered that should make you feel good. Would you rather get nothing at all?
Or what look like black socks, but if you look closely you'll see they're very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue.

Blue and black or white and gold?

:P

I love getting socks as presents as they are surprisingly expensive (for comfy ones at least).

Underwear on the other hand depends on who is the one giving considering receiving underwear means that your crotch entered their minds when they were thinking about what to get you.

I sometimes enjoy the idea of not receiving gifts, because then I won't feel obliged to give something back next year, especially if it's someone who you barely know & know what they may like as a present.

I like getting socks for Xmas, especially at the rate I change them due to working 5 days a week.

Always happy to get socks, espicailly if you are going through them and have hole in them like me, got three packs of three yesterday 👍

Socks are the best, especially when you get really nice ones that you wouldn't normally buy because they're $20 a pair.

Or even a bit unusual. I've got a pair with Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus' that I never would have bought in a million years (despite being something like $7) but I wear them to my sister's whenever she hosts a gathering because she doesn't allow shoes in her house except for somber occasions.

I think it vastly depends on the age of the person receiving them. As a kid, all I wanted was the material things; video games, toys, anything I can do things with. I just finished my first semester of college, and this year, I wasn't all that excited for Christmas. Just give me my time off to relax and not have to worry about anything, and I'll be the happiest guy on the planet! As a kid, I haged getting clothes. This year I got a pair of jeans, a few T-shirts, and a few other items of clothing, and I perfectly happy. I've been growing out of some things recently, so it's nice to get a few new things.

Once you start getting older, you start to appreciate the finer things, even if they are clothes. Everybody needs them, after all. Public nudity is a crime, ya know?
