BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- An Argentine soccer player was expelled from a minor league game and fired from his team for mistreating a dog that wandered onto the field.

Fox Sports de Argentina broadcast images on Tuesday showing the player use both hands to grab the mid-size black-and-white dog by the collar and throw it toward the bleachers during the game. The dog struck a chain-link fence and fell down, but quickly got up and ran away.

The referee flashed a red penalty card at the player, Jose Gimenez, signaling his expulsion from the game between his Bella Vista team and the San Juan team in Tucuman province, which is about 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) north of Buenos Aires.

Gimenez told the newspaper Gazeta de Tucuman that he later felt ashamed by what he did and said he had been fired from the team.

The player said he had a hard time trying to explain to his 3-year-old son "why I had choked a doggie on TV.''

He said he decided to deal with the dog because no one else was trying to get it off the field, "but it wasn't my intention for this to occur.''

Still, Gimenez complained about the attention caused by the case. "So many things occur in soccer that do not have such repercussions,'' he said.

Shocking news, I can't comprehend what was in his mind when he did this atrocity. A few years back, similar incident happened when an owl was kicked during a soccer match and died in the end after being treated.

Now this is happening again, the man got what he deserves, fired from his club, but I felt even that is still lacking, he should be charged for animal abuse and sentenced in jail.

UPDATE - credits to Cano :D

And now for the doggie: she has been found! The opposite team of the match, Club Atlético San Juan, searched for the dog and found her and her owner. The team adopted the dog, called "Negrita", "Blackie" in english, as its official pet; they took her to the vet and all that. She is now under the care of the team but still in her house, as it was a home dog (which indeed begs the question: wtf was she doing at the stadium?). And oh yeah, she is fine, just a few contussions and a small cut because of the impact against the fence.

I hope every stray in town urinates on his newspaper. That all his car tires are watered daily by local mongrels.

Of course a hefty fine could help too.:)

Nothing makes this right, to be honest.

I don't love dogs, but I could never get myself to throw one (also because I'm terrified of them :boggled:) - nor any living creature for that matter.

I'm sure he'll get what he deserves, and I hope he'll welcome the fine from the Argentine version of ASPCA, if they've got one.

This guy needs to be locked up for a LONG time.

But the one thing I don't get is why do so many people get into riots over the score of a game? I mean, I've been pretty p-o'ed at some video games, but these people are practically about to murder someone over losing a match. (This part is after I read the article banning foreign fans from attending games.)

Not excusing his behavior, but in an awful lot of countries around the world, dogs are considered vermin and only one step up from rats...

You do realise that at some point African people (for example) were also considered less than vermin?

To the OP, Animal Abuse is not a crime in Argentina, at least from what I can find.

Than there should be.

Indeed he should be. And the part about the riots is simple: Group pressure. People by themselves wouldn't make those choices as they make while in a group.

It doesn't look to me like he was pressured by a group... Plus, that doesn't make the act less wrong :P.

I cannot stand animal cruelty. There is no excuse for it.

In this particular instance he could have just passed the dog over to someone on the sideline. To try and throw it over the fence is just barbaric. I would expect some kind of fine at least.

I still can't believe the guy did this knowing it would absolutely blow out to public atention. He deserves jail and all the hate he can get.

Really guys?

I get that it's an atrocious act, but saying he should be thrown in jail is a bit much. A fine and community service would be enough. He was in the middle of a game, if something comes onto the field you get it off as quickly as possible without really thinking about it. From what I can gather from the video, he was trying to get it over the fence so someone else catch it on the other side, as it had nowhere else to go except onto the field elsewhere.

Not to mention that I'm pretty sure it's not a cardable offense. It's something for the real world to sort out, it had no impact on the game.

Mob mentality is a powerful thing. Emotions are high and all it takes is for one negative decision for things to turn bad. There are reasons why supporters of different teams are kept separated inside the stadium.

Oh yeah, really. At least his career is over as hell. Or at least I hope so.

You do know a $500 fine does not scare people away from being cruel to animals?

kill a dog, get a $500 fine.
kill a police dog, go to jail.

Why because police dogs are considered police officers.

I say make animal cruelty punishments either equal to or more than what the same kind of crime would be if done to a person.

Most dogs wont attack back or even defend it self if you attack them, where a person can

Tesla, tell that to Michael Vick.

This guy is a total cabeza de clavo. Freaking idiot.

Wow, testosterone much? I doubt he would have treated this dog in such a way if he had not been in the middle of a game. People make mistakes. Forgive the guy, Jesus H. Christ on a crutch.

Extremely illogical.

Animals possess a fraction of the cognitive powers of humans and thus do not possess similar rights. Animals are animals. They cannot think as humans can and generally have no use or concept for the rights that humans have.

It's also illogical to base punishments on how willing the victim is to defend itself. There's simply no reason why a crime against something that refuses to defend itself is a greater violation of rights than an equal crime against something that will.

Just because you like a certain group of beings on this earth does not mean that they deserve special treatment.

At least dogs have the capacity to be the most loyal creature on earth and can be trained well for many purposes that benefits human. They deserve something in return for their contribution, loyalty and friendship :D Treat them well, there's nothing to lose there.

A human should have the brains not to attack a defenseless dog in such a manner.

Plus some dogs have better "cognitive" powers than some people so cognitive ability shouldn't really matter.

If a human does something so stupid they to me are no longer qualify for human rights.

That is simply because you would like to see animals take over the world, you've shown it with multi silly thread startings

It will happen.

Remember planet of the apes.

People think animals are less intelligent because they don't want to acknowledge any possible intellect.

when we blow ourselves up it will be the cockroaches that rule, not out of intellect but out of simplicity, bullet proof 👍

So dogs can just wander onto the field like that? Where was the owner in all this? Everyone is yelling at the guy for throwing it, fair enough, but what about the owner that let a dog wonder onto the field interrupting play?

So tar and feather him.

With the exception of the extremely mentally handicapped, no they don't.

Cognitive ability is what endows rights. Do plants have rights? Does dirt have rights?

Animals like dogs deserve some rights, animal rights are a thing that can be violated. Less cognizant animals like mice have less rights.

If a human does something so stupid they to me are no longer qualify for human rights.

That's the basis of the justice system. What rights they forfeit for violating another's rights are based on what rights they violated. Saying that doing something "stupid" (whatever constitutes that) should forfeit your human rights is silly. A dog's rights are not significant enough to warrant this person losing his human rights as you would like to see.

Guide dogs.

They can navigate their blind owner around safely because they have been trained to do so.

Assistance dogs.

Help their owners know when something is happening.

These people are do have a mental disability, yet the dogs that help them are quite smart .

Here are some dogs that can do maths

Being trained to perform tasks and being cognisant are not the same.

Let's not forget dogs that guards airport's customs, police dogs, kettle dogs, home guard dogs, and those cold climate sled dogs :D Some of the world's most loyal creatures are dogs, not humans.
