Toyota Starlet Glanza V '97

There is an itch here in America, throbbing and unscratched, for small performance hatches like this one. I believe that unless the lukewarm attitude of OEM's toward hatches in America changes, torches and pitchforks are in order. We ride at midnight.

On an unrelated note, the word "Glanza," sounds entirely too much like another word - "glans penis;" which, as words go, is not a particularly good one.

Hey man, I've been testing out some of your setups today and so far really like the ones I've tried. I just did the BMW MS CSL '03 and it's perfect around the Nurb for me, love it! I'm using a G27 wheel, I see you use the DS3, guess we have similar driving styles. I'm looking forward to trying more of your set-ups (see we have a lot of the same cars) and enjoy reading your descriptions also, thank you so much for sharing your work!

Oh yeah, I'm also a big fan of Dune :)

Renault R5 Turbo '80

The vanguard of the first turbo era. This car's F1 heritage is apparent in its drivetrain layout and 1.5L Turbo engine displacement and aspiration. For those of you not versed in F1 lore; the 70's were dominated by the Ford Cosworth 3.0L V8, with the only other competitive engine being the Ferrari Flat-12. The regulations also permitted 1.5L Forced Induction motors; but the costs associated with making them reliable and powerful meant that the teams, mostly privateers ("garagisti,") ignored them. In 1977, Renault brought it's money and an army of engineers to the table and set about developing it's own 1.5L V6 Turbo for the World Championship. (Incidentally, I think this is the same army that decended on Alain Prost's house and torched his Mercedes when he criticized the car and the team a few years later. ) The car was largely tested and developed by driver/engineer Jean-Pierre Jabouille; and was at first both unreliable and undriveable. The garagisti derided it as the "teapot" (it blew up a lot,);)forgetting that they had been scoffed at a decade earlier by Enzo Ferrari. They were afraid. By 1979, the engine was reliable (sort of) and powerful (though still quite a handful, but hey, F1, bro,);)and appropriately, Jabouille scored it's first victory at the French Grand Prix in Dijon that year.

That race is remembered mostly for the epic scrap for second place between Gilles Villeneuve, in the Ferrari; and Jabouille's teammate Rene Arnoux. This is a truly great duel, fought with the highest honor and mutual respect.

This car is a product of Renault's efforts during those early days of the first turbo era; and as such is something very special.

Edit: I know, I know Jean Ragnotti, Group B, maxi turbo, blah, blah, blah...I've already talked about Group B before and thought it would be interesting to talk about one of my favorite eras of F1. Also, clearly the programs were related. As my friend Pete05 stated previously: "Group B: F1 in the forests with no margin for error. "

So I drove this car for the seasonal event and was shocked by how well it handled stock and how much fun it was to drive. Had to have one of my own. Oddly, its handling is broadly similar to that of the Renault above (only without the power oversteer.) I also have to say that this car really looks great lowered, with a bodykit and wheels.

612kg, 10,000rpm, turbo; what's not to like? (Ok, ok 162hp, but whatever ****you. :P)

This little car is hilarious. On sport softs, the game is to see how early you can get on the throttle. On racing tires it becomes a ridiculous game of neverlift. Oh, I also made a drift setup because whatever ****you. 👍

This car has 2 setups available, one for Drift on CH tires and one for Grip on SS-RH tires.

Another brilliant tune. easily won gold with this in the seasonal. No weight reduction though, and less power in order to meet 400pp. Thanx!

Lol! I didn't even know there was a seasonal for this. I'll have to try it out when I get back.

P.S. I took a little 800km road trip to Barcelona for F1 Friday Practice, and look what I ran into!
2014-05-10 10.09.18.jpg

As an American, I had never seen one in person. It's so much smaller and more fragile than what I was expecting! The body panels look like they would be easily dented by a stiff breeze. Awesome!

Indeed! The later evo 2 models look even more awesome. Quality, especially electronics, is poor to say the least. And a modern FF hot hatch like the megane rs is quicker. But it is an icon!

I keep seeing those (meganes) around here and I get all excited, only to find that its a tarted up diesel.

By far the worst I have run into are the white, kitted out Focuses (Foci?) that say "HIRVONEN" and "LATVALA," and I'm all like "sweet, must be some badass rally special Focus RS. " (which is also a unicorn in the States) Then you look at the back and it says TDCi.....wop wop...:P

Also I have absolutely fallen in love with our Citroen C4 rental car. I don't know if this car is appreciated in Europe, but as an outsider it is a brilliant, eminently chuckable little car with a great gearbox and an amazing ride.

First tune I have done in some time for racing tires. I had forgotten the simple pleasure of having TONS of grip available. Anyway this car is a blast to drive. I'd like to see how they managed to squeeze 500hp+ out of this motor without FI, or if they even built this thing for real.

As a mentioned in a previous post, we rented one of these (albeit a newer one, and 5-door, and not as powerful, but whatever, **** you :) ) recently, and I was pretty impressed by it. Though it had no power (I often found my self bucking forward in the driver's seat, trying to make it go faster,) the ride/handling compromise was just sublime. Many cars that handle well, ride poorly and vice-versa. Few cars can do both. When Clarkson talked about how "everything's very soft, very....Citroën-y;" I now think that I know what he meant. I drove 1600km in two days traveling to the F1 race in Barcelona, and could have done another 1600. I have tried to retain the Citroën-y nature of the car that I drove with this tune; only with a bit more power.

This car has been a royal pain the ass. I had been fighting with it for several weeks before my vacation. It's interesting how being away from something for a little while can give you new insights and a new perspective. It didn't take me long to notice a few things when I got back that never would have occurred to me previously. The car is still not particularly fast in terms of lap times, but at least it is pretty entertaining to drive.

It was a flaming nightmare before, trust me.

I have a soft spot for this car. I test drove one some time in '07 and I remember being pretty impressed by the 2.0T's torque. I also still have (!) the DVD brochure that they gave me, where they hilariously referred to the passenger side "Oh, ****! handle." I test drove a MKVI more recently, and was distinctly unimpressed with the power. I had just test driven the Mustang, though. It was probably a mistake to do them in that order.

Also, this:

Just look at it. Automotive design perfection. Take a movement to adjust to this car's handling; because at 662kg, its braking and cornering limits are phenomenal. If you like your dates to be sensitive (like Orido!) give this one a try.

*update* small tweak to final. Car has better traction. 1/1/14 small tweak to LSD. 1/26/14, change to brake balance.

Setup was originally for RS tires, and an early one at that. I've been working on fixing it and a few others for the past few days, and I think I've finally cracked it. It'll be up later when I get off work.

smashing, I'm sure you'll find a way, as they say: if there's a wheel, there's a way :)

Aww, you shouldn't have! I'll give this setup a try tomorrow. I don't know much about drifting though, so I probably wont notice any real changes from what I've got already.
Can you please check the tranny settings I've tried to set it up and the 5th gear number doesn't add up if I set the final gear number

This car has a very favorable performance versus PP ratio. It's hard to beat this car in online races with aa PP limiter.
Needs indeed ballast in the nose otherwise it's harakiri...

D'oh! transmission is set with final at 3.730. Not pretty, but it works. I'm probably gonna have to retune this car anyway.

AE86 Special

Music is worth 20 extra hp!

For all the wannabe Takumis out there. I needed to experience the Fujiwara Zone for myself after witnessing it's majesty first hand. See if you can attain a higher state of consciousness and understanding, where 2wd seems to accelerate like 4wd. It is also possible for your car to attain a Super Saiyajin-like aura when in the Fujiwara Zone. Maybe you will see it tonight. ;)

All jokes aside, these three tunes are all enjoyable grip cars with varying levels of slip available. They are all subtly different too.

I really like the Levin.

11/17/14 updated again, now they handle properly.

A bit soft and very forgiving. Has the least power of the three. Will drift, but you really need to nail it.

Mercedes-Benz AMG VGT

This car is outrageously easy to control for something with 1100hp and RWD only...

Autumn Ring - Mini_2.jpg

Also, the styling is excellent and original; it seems like they took the whole VGT thing a lot more seriously than BMW, who basically mailed in a tarted up M4.

Nissan Fairlady 2000 (SR311) '68

This car totally came out before the so-called genre-defining MGB. I can attest to the fact that a stock MGB is completely horrible to drive; and I got to drive an early, chrome bumper example. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to justify the multitude of hours spent diagnosing and fixing its numerous maladies. I bet that this car has none of those characteritics.

The rubber bumper MGB is something that haunts my nightmares...
