I got 250 bucks to spend, im having a hard time

ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 128 mb ddr

Nvidia fx5900 256mb ddr

im having a really hard time comparing the two.. anyone can plz show me the benchmarks for both of them plz?

9800 pro all the way 👍 but then again, I'm biased towards ATI since I've got 4 actively running rigs with ati cards on them (2 8500s and 2 7500s). Never had a problem with any of them in the past so I'm happy.
- the 256 megs doesn't make a hugely noticeable benchmark difference...at least on the ATI's it doesn't.

Get what you can afford. Also keep in mind that ATI is working closely with Valve during the making of Half-Life 2. That in itself is reason to get the next generation ATI card, but that's just me, and yes I've bought into the hype. I've owned ATI and Nvidia, the ATI cards always seem to have a better picture.....

Good luck, check the numbers, and get what you can afford.

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 baby! I know, I heard alot of good things about ATI, too, but I would go with the FX 5900. Both would be an even smarter choice. :P.

If you want pretty pictures, go with ATi. nVidia's drivers have crappy anti-aliasing; I installed the latest Detonator drivers for my GeForce 4 and there were jaggies everywhere! :irked:

If jaggies don't worry you, go with the GeForce FX.

^ that's true, the Catalysts have lots of AA features built in.

@ Shannon, try digging through the advanced driver settings - there should be a way to force AA.

You mean Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce 4 Ti4200...right?

👍 that's where the catalysts store the settings. I've got a tab for OpenGL and Direct3d performance settings - i've never seen the Detonators so I couldn't really say

I'm not running Detonators at the moment. I'm running the drivers that came with the card. All my games seem to run decently with them and they aren't as harsh with the jaggies as the Detonators.

The Detonator driver configuration is basically the same as the ones I'm running now though:

I will say Nvidia, just because they are my preference.

Version 27.20 ?...... Now That's pretty old sk00l....

And to answer the Question, I'd go with the FX, but I've been an nVidia fanboy (although not a very loud one) since TNT1...

Cheers enviously....

Meh, they work. That's the main thing. And the CD the drivers came on, does have DirectX 8.1, so yeah, you'd expect them to be old...

I've been a hardcore Nvidia fan for a few generations now (after leaving 3dFx *sniff* *sniff* ) and have been more or less happy with the cards.
The cards perform solidly, and there are constant driver updates (always use the Nvidia reference drivers even if you have a alternate brand card from Nvidia like I do.)
I also am looking at getting a next gen card at the moment and several things have pushed me in the direction of ATI though.
The first of which is that it's a solidly performing card with no real weaknesses.
The second is that Halflife 2 was designed with DirectX9 and the ATI cards in mind (whereas the current Nvidia cards do directX9 effects, but not natively in the hardware.) Plus you get Halflife 2 free :D
third is image quality, where a certain someone's *glares* old AIW 8500 always had nicer screenshots than my Geforce. Mostly because of the way FSAA was handled in the cards, but there were other noticable differences.
and lastly is that Nvidia was caught "cheating" in 3dmark benchmarking software by optimizing a set of drivers for that sepcific program. All was settled between the 2 companies, but several hardware sites hinted that it was to avoid costly lawsuits that madonion couldn't really afford.
Take your pick though, both cards rock.

Lets see..... Call of Duty vs. Half Life 2.

Huh, if a free game is to be a deciding factor, ATI all the way. ;)

I too am a 3dfx fan....owner of their last card, the voodoo 5500 (the voodoo 6000, quad v-processor was a myth). T'would be nice if there were more competition other than nVidia and ATI, unfortuneately, for gaming, that seems to be the two major hitters.

Tom,

Glad to see that you have seen the light...so to speak. *avoiding glares* ;)

I mean, yeah, HL2 is obviously better, I'm just saying you get something.

I am also an owner of the old Mega huge board dubbed the Voodoo 5 5500. The thing is a monster card, it's just too bad the performance doesn't match the looks.:(

The 6000 twas not a Myth - Only 56 were made though - and not all in working condition.. There has been a couple on Ebay not too long ago... Here's an article with benchmarks and tons of hi-res pictures....
