A few days ago imageshack did a site update and the result is they changed the service from a free and payed service to a pay to upload service.

Even though it costs $1/month to get a paid account and upload, many who just use it for basic file hosting for random images or the PMC will no longer beable to use it unless they fork out money.

I for one will just be using my photobucket.

And for those of you that can't be bothered with Photobucket, Imgur allows image hosting without an account, and has free to use accounts that are fairly robust.

I used to used Imageshack (up until right now) because it was quick and easy to upload random bits and pieces at whatever size then share just the actual JPEG - unlike Photobucket that seems to convert direct JPEG links back in to an actual Photobucket page. I had a Flickr account but after my Pro status expired a few years ago and I didn't want to continue paying for it I lost all but the most recent 200 photos on there so I gave up on it. I think Imgur will be my next stop.

I tend to use Dropbox; set up a free account for whatever project it is and host the images there.
There's no monitoring of how many times the files are accessed so there are no 'this user has exceeded their permitted bandwidth' errors.

I used to use imageshack because you could do batch uploads.

Now for random stuff I use tinypic
And for my pictures I have a photobucket account. When you dl the app on your phone, you get an 8 GB space added to your account.

I have like 500pics on Photobucket and am at 10% of the space available.

Only major complaint is that the pics get downscaled to 764px height I think.

But for free it's okay

Photobucket was all I used for a few months when I first needed a place to upload stuff. it had all the space I ever needed back then, but the site usually bugged out on me whenever I tried browsing or uploading, and the quality loss was noticeable when images did upload.

Switched to Picasa three years ago and thought it was great around the time G+ was introduced. With virtually unlimited file space - provided you had a Plus account - and the ability to fine-tune the image size through the URL. Space isn't quite so generous these days and the quality drop can be an issue with larger images, but it's proven to be a reliable host.

Recently been using Imgur's free service for quick uploads where I don't require various image size options, and Flickr for photos with minimal quality loss. Even if the site runs incredibly slow at times.

I can use mine still free?
It's only limited picture file size..I think.
Edit:

What happens to my account after the trial or if it expires?
If you don’t pay after the free 30 day trial or if your premium subscription expires, image uploading will not be available. However, access to the account and images previously uploaded are still allowed.

Yeah, the 200 most recent photos thing sucked. But they had updated their service, around last year I think. Now everybody gets 1 Terabyte (:dunce: IKR?!!) of free space and they removed the 200 photo limit too. 👍

Go check back on your flickr account. If they hadn't deactivated it, you might be able to view all your previous photos.

Hah, nice! This must be quite recent, surely? I think I checked not too long ago. Got all ~3,800 of my photos back. Here's the first one I ever uploaded, taken around seven years ago:

Thanks for the tip-off!

Well I downloaded the images I had on their, then deleted them and removed the favorite from my toolbar.

If anyone else wants to do the same.

Download a program called "free download manager"(there may be others that can do this)
Go to the right and click select all
On the top of the tool bar there will be an option for getting links.
Select direct link and also select the size to be full size.
Then copy all the links and go to Fee Download Manager, click on file, then import, import list of URLs from clipboard.
And that will download all your images

Then upload to your new image site.

Thanks for the heads up 👍
I've been using Imageschack the past years but working with it was getting more and more fustrating, and this will scare me away for good then...

I used it for quick uploads of pics.

I do like how photobucket allows you to have albums where you can separate pic and not have them all in the one page.

Really? I tried this back when Dropbox started (I upload translated versions of manga, so tens of thousands of views per image usually) and the images got removed fairly quickly. I wasn't terribly surprised, it's not intended as dedicated image hosting for serious numbers of people and so I just assumed it would never work.

Maybe I should try again.

To be honest I've never experienced traffic of 10000+, more like a few hundred. I found some of the hosting sites would take the image down after even a hundred or so hits. Once I found dropbox suited my needs, I stopped looking for suitable hosts.

I'm still using Imageshack and it's still free. I just uploaded something this morning. There was absolutely no notice of a fee whatsoever.

Look on the left side.
Does it say trial?

I switched to Photobucket, then Picasaweb years ago, when photos just randomly disappeared from Imageshack. I started Imageshack when I started posting images here because it was the recommended site at the time.

Picasaweb has started "processing" images during upload, which I can't find how to disable. Say an image intentionally a little dark overall to preserve detail in a very bright area gets uploaded; Picasaweb will equalize it, destroying the bright detail and pulling noise out of the dark space. It's become almost as bad as Facebook uploads!

I'm trying Flickr, its sets are a nice way of organizing, but it's VERY difficult to post an image from Flickr without the Flickr propaganda all over it. It's possible, but tedious, to edit the links Flickr provides, but that's actually in violation of their terms.

Photobucket doesn't give you size selections when posting from their albums, at least not that I've seen how to do...

You can resize and crop pics easily in paint before you upload. That is how I get most of my "Guess that" images from.

Hey guys, I am ImageShack's CEO. Just wanted to say few words about recent changes at ImageShack. A lot of you have used GTPlanet.

After long deliberation, we decided that in order for us to run a viable business we must increase quality, speed, add new features, listen to our users, make photo storage safe (e.g. not lose images), which meant ultimately removing ads from our site. That being the case, left only one option: revenue must be derived from subscriptions. We understand that some people simply would not be willing to pay, and will leave ImageShack, however there was simply no other choice. Either we degrade quality of the service for All users by forcing more ads on you - that ultimately something we decided not to do.

Now I know I know, there there are plenty of free image hosts out there, like photobucket, imgur, flickr etc... They all have ads, track your data, sell it to the highest bidder. For them you are the product. We decided that this is something we do not want to do at ImageShack.

The fact of the matter is that concentrating on smaller number of paying users allows us to deliver better quality and experience, while actually making our business more viable, so that is what we decided to do in 2014.

We have offered _free_ uploading and image hosting to the world for 10 years, from 2004 to 2014.

We never asked anything form our users, but this year, we are sending a message “Help us survive!” a couple of bucks per month is all we need to continue to support your uploads, make beautiful galleries (like this onehttps://imageshack.com/user/fishkov), run unlimited storage with unlimited bandwidth.

There you have it, I will respond to your comments on this thread, and flames via PM.

-Jack

@jacque74 Thanks for stopping by, Jack, and welcome to GTPlanet.

Best of luck to you and the ImageShack team as you transition your business model towards a premium service. 👍

I appreciate the background information regarding your decision to switch from a free to paid service, @jacque74. I sincerely hope everything works out well for you.

Best of luck @jacque74.

I am so thankful @Jordan created the new free image importer for this site. It is insanely easy to use. You simply drag and drop it from your computer (desktop or wherever the image is saved) directly into your reply. You can also use the "upload a file" option. At that point you can set them as thumbnails or full pictures.

For those that didn't know, make sure you check it out. Works better than any other site I have seen and its free. I am always surprised when I see people not using this new feature. Thanks again Jordan. My top favorite feature with the new site. 👍
