AustraliaVision 2015 - ViennaMusic

I didn't watch it this year.

How many of them sang in English? That annoys me; it's really dull if most of them sing in one language. I'd greatly prefer it if each country sang in their native tongue. Or one of their native tongues, where applicable.

Of all the 40 countries, it was only Finland, France, Italy, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania (with a bit too in English too) and Spain who sang on their - non-English - national language(s); the remaining 33 are all on English.

I'm reminded of the time that Belgium entered a song in an entirely artificial language, because there are no language restrictions in Eurovision.

What about the United Kingdom and Australia?

Anyway, Sweden, Belgium and Latvia were probably the best songs. Russia and Romania were also pretty good.

Pretty embarrassing for Austria to get zero, but then, the song was rubbish. San Marino were probably the worst, though.

Rubbish. Maybe it's just me but even as tacky as EuroVision is, I really appreciate the song and the country's culture more if they sing in (one of) their own languages.

Even the United Kingdom and Ireland could sing in something other than English....

Out of the finalists, I think Albania were the only competitors deserving of nil pois. Balkan and Greek support doesn't reflect that of course.

Germany didn't even deserve to go through automatically with the performance they were lumped with. So it's no surprise they came joint bottom, though I expected at least one point to come from Austria and vice versa.

It's why I commend performances from the likes of Romania. I may not give a crap about the actual song but at least they didn't cave in and sing in the most common tongue nowadays.

Also glad some countries made a more obvious attempt to knock block voting to the kerb this year with a few surprise results. No shock that most of the continent sucked up to the novelty entry, but they did have the best Commonwealth performance. Radio 2's constant worship of the UK entry through frequent airtime and undeserved praise became grating weeks ago.

I think that Germany should have gotten some points. That song was pretty good.
Although, I'm Swedish, so I'm pretty happy with the result. :P

When I heard the Swedish entry I kinda knew it would do well because it sound so 'chart ready'... literally like the songs which are on the radio at the moment. Plus the performance design was pretty neat. I do wonder what would have happened if Australia had won... would they have hosted it? Send all of Europe down under

It makes sense to sing in English though given that it's the largest second language in Europe.

And you also have a higher chance of winning if you sing in English (according to the statistics). Serbia's Molitva is the only non-English song that has won since at least year 2000. But of course the statistics are flawed, because most songs are in English, so of course there's a bigger chance that the winning song is in English as well...

The runner-up in the Swedish competition was in Sami / Swedish though, so we nearly sent a non-English song this year.

They would have had to host it somewhere in Europe. The competition is hosted by the broadcasting company of the country that won, so the Australian company would have got to host it, but in a European country.

Knowing our luck they would choose to host it in the UK because of the cultural link

Probably more Aussies here then in any other EU country.

As for Swedish culture, our domestic music scene has been dominated by the English language since the days of the Beatles. So singing in English is actually more typically Swedish than to sing in Swedish.
