@ Vince_Fiero, SkengD.

But also, your Internet connection is saturated, in fact, if you try to download the same time. Newsgroup. Bittorent ...

But also, your ISP is doing work on your DSLAM at the corner of your street.

But also, FBI annalyse packets that travel over your phone line.

A solution that works for me:
1 - I place new friends in "Always" section, for 24 hours.
2 - Then I switched them in "Reciprocate".
3 - Enough friends, near 40-user Grinder
4 - Each month, I remove nicks who do not use my drivers.

I have a different problem, sometimes it get stuck on "Loading Race" or "Starting Race" status and doesn't change, what could it be?

I always have this problem and it is very annoying since v2.5.2. The race will start but the widget will will be stuck on "loading" until the race finishes. Only after the race completes and back on server screen (ps3), then must reload widget and it works again.

Happens every two hours or so, sometimes in between every race.

Because of this i don't grind overnight anymore...

Same here, its quite annoying.

Yonis needs to fix these issues and release an update if fixable. Hope so. God bless yonis for the grinder app.

I'm wondering if whatever time Yonis has for this project is better spent on the browser extension rather than the widget. At least, that's my vote if my vote was worth anything :-)

Thanks Yonis, wherever your efforts go!

Where are the preferences saved to?

I want to move the widget to a different machine but keep all of my settings. I have looked under AppData/Local and AppData/Roaming but have only found settings for Yahoo's Widget engine.

I am running Windows 7.

In the registry.

Browser extension huh?
Yes Browser extensions.
Chrome - https://chrome.google.com/webstore?hl=en-GB
Firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/?browse=featured

releasing as a browser extension means you can ditch Yahoo widgets install.

As lots of people DON'T like Yahoo for what ever reason.
( And OSX and LINUX have there own Widget coding built in, so why install yet another app to do duplicate functions. )
But the only hold back is yet again IE, does not allow Custom User Extensions unlike all other browsers.

The only 'real' problem with a browser add on is the browser has to always be open, correct? On a 'puter with several user accts, this would be a mess. Sure, you could use one of the other supported browsers. But, who wants 2 different browsers open?

Agreed.

And I think there could also be an Android and iPad app. I would gladly pay for those, mostly Android. Make it same as the widget. It'd run in foreground or background like any other Android app. This would rock!

Now that i've moved onto Ubuntu, is there any way I can continue using this widget on there?

Thanks.

No one is forced to use the Yahoo widget. If you like to use your browser for b-Spec, then you can do it here: GT5 Home
Ask PD for a automated grinder patch.

I personally love all of my widgets. :dopey:👍

no ones forcing yonis to do any thing ether hes offered the info that he might build the browser extension...
And I answered the question buggs asked.
Browser extension huh?
Not like web sites even care about IE users any more is it?.
Even Sonys community forums are now tested on Firefox first.
Sony admins even admit to having Chrome browsers to read the replys of struggling IE user...

Guess it's time for a status update!

Widget:
I'm not going to spend much more energy on it. My efforts are now concentrated on the browser extension. I've gotten lots of translations for the UI, so I'm going to make some quick layout changes, put in the translations, and release an update. I will continue to support it if it breaks.

Browser Extension:
Going well. You can track my progress on GitHub. It's not going to be ready soon as there's a lot of work to be done, but I've gotten a good start on it, and I'm feeling pretty good about it so far.

Right now I'm looking at what needs to be done to get it working in Firefox. I'm used to Chrome and Safari's model where you have a main HTML page that drives the extension in the background, but Firefox's model uses XUL, which is a bit different.
correction to above post yonis IS doing the browser extension.

I may be missing something but:-

1) I dont want no steeenking other browser.....

If you run Yonis' most excellent Grinder widget then you have to:-

a) install the Yahoo Widget Engine

b) have the widget running all the time you want the grinder to be running.

How is this any different to installing a different web browser to your favoured one, opening the web browser, firing up a future Yonis' most excellent new Grinder browser add-on/extension and then minimising the browser so it sits somewhere out of the way unobtrusively? Grinding away to your heart's content. It is after all just another bit of software running on your computer.

2) Which approach can reach more platforms?

As I understand it Yahoo widgets run on Macs and Windows. That precludes all flavours of Linux.

A firefox browser extension could extend the available platforms not only to Linux machines but also, possibly(?) to mobile phones that support firefox (and extensions) i.e. Android https://market.android.com/details?id=org.mozilla.firefox&hl=en fo.

3) I want Yonis to write an app for Ipad / Iphone* / another mobile platform..

There is a reason this is unlikely to happen and a reason why you may not want it to.

a) Why it is unlikely to happen:- because Yonis can choose what he wants to code. He is the guy who has generously put the effort in to develop this, fix bugs, develop new versions to improve features and provide support on the forum for free. I would imagine his time is precious to him and he will choose to develop for whatever platform he feels he will get the most pleasure / reward / benefit from and if that reaches the greater audience then all the better. I doubt he has the time or inclination to learn how to code for multiple platforms and then rewrite everything to cater for the idiosyncrasies of each. We cant go demanding him to do stuff we can just ask nicely ;) .

b) Why you may not want it:- The grinder widget needs two things to work: an internet connection on all the time it is running and power to run the cpu, screen and internet connection etc. On mobile phones, certainly in the UK, there are increasingly, bandwidth limits and painful surcharges if you exceed them. If you had your phone grinding all day at your workplace / school / college how long, on top of your usual browsing / bandwidth use, would your bandwidth allowance last? If you have access to wifi for free all day that may be less of a problem but how long does your mobile run for if you have the broadband / wifi on all day? Maybe you have access to a power point and can leave the phone plugged in all day but I suspect that that the majority of those after a phone app want to be able to grind all day with their phone in their pocket/jacket/briefcase/school bag or whatever. I haven't done the sums and don't have figures to back this up so I may be wrong but based on my phone and seeing how other folks phones perform I suspect I am not.

4) Why a browser extension?

If you read back you will find that Yonis himself said that Yahoo Widgets is a coding dead end. Yahoo don't seem to be developing the base system any more. See his post here for more detail https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?p=5471205#post5471205. The underlying coding for Browser extensions are being developed all the time and will most likely give Yonis the tools to create an even cooler Grinder with much more advanced features.

Personally I am just glad Yonis has shared his work with us all and I am just off to donate something to his cause ;)

Cheers

PS I have used "firefox" throughout this post but you could equally substitute chrome or opera or another multi platform browser.

* Dont even start on the Apple walled garden and the app approval process that can see apps rejected or pulled from the app store just because apple don't like the cut of your jib ;)

I couldn't agree more Mike!

I'm very happy to have the Grinder. It has worked flawlessly for 3 months.

I think many people forget that Server Maintenance is not related to Grinder and not filling grids is easily fixed by adjusting threads & delay. Less threads and more delay will result in full grids.

I also want to thank Yonis for his efforts and look forward to whatever he develops next! I donated about 3 months ago just after 2.0 was released. I think it's time to renew my donation!

Is there a way to leave the extension running while the browser window is closed? Similar to downloading in Firefox. The browser window can be closed while the DL window remains open until it's procedure completes.

Is Adobe Air an option?

that way it could run on windows, Mac and Linux, as well as mobile devices, such as the Android phones and PlayBook tablets.

Just a thought

Adobe have stopped any further development of AIR for Linux. :(

"The last Adobe release of AIR for desktop Linux is AIR 2.6."
