B-spec Training Guide

The theory driving this B-spec Training Guide is based on observations that if all appropriate factors can be controlled, B-spec races can be scripted to repeat the exact same race. Each battle for position, pass, or mistake will be replayed by the script, and the race will end with identical race times, lead over the 2nd place vehicle, and B-spec points.

The main goal of this guide is to provide step-by-step instructions that will train the B-spec driver to a skill level of B-spec: 7375/100/73/73. This Hard Milestone score occurs when the fractions of several subclass point collections resolve and provide a number that confirms that no points, or fractions of a point, have been missed so far. Another goal is to include races that are scripted to be interesting to watch, but this goal was later replaced with a priority for completing the guide, and keeping the instructions as simple as possible. A primary goal for the training guide is that the B-spec driver will earn his own cars and credits to complete the collection, and earn as many credits as possible during the process.

There is a strong possibility that parts of this Training Guide will only apply to the North American version of the game. If the properties of the vehicles, or lineups presented after a restart do not match between versions, then different results will be obtained. The Training Guide should still provide a general outline for how to collect the B-spec points, but the settings for each race are unlikely to lead to identical results.

Training Guide Overview
  • A used Cappuccino is purchaced to collect some A-1 points while earning credits for a Triumph Spitfire to finish the A-1 collection.
  • The Cappuccino wins the Ginetta G4 from the Beginner K Cup races which is used to collect points in the A-2 subclass.
  • A new Triumph Spitfire completes the A-1 collection at El Capitan; a single model One-make Race.
  • The Ginetta G4’s slowly collects all points in the A-2 subclass over a series of 20 short and simple races.
  • For the most part, the Ginetta G4 races will earn all of the credits required to complete the B-spec training.
  • A Chrysler Crossfire is purchased to collect points in the B-1 subclass in a series of 5 very close races.
  • A Clio Sport V6 Phase 2 collects the B-2 points while winning the Clio Trophy once, and finishing up with one more race.
  • The Clio is upgraded to collect the C-1 points while winning the Clio Trophy once, and finishing up with one more race.
  • One Clio Trophy Race Car is sold to satisfy the credit requirements. Another can be kept as a prize.
  • A Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG is purchased to complete the C-2 collection over a series of 3 races at Nurburgring.
  • The SL 65 AMG is used to collect track points from the Silver Arrow races and earns the CLK Touring Car.
  • The CLK Touring Car is used to collect track points while earning credits from the DTCM.
  • The CLK Touring Car is upgraded with Turbo 3 to collect all points in the D-1 subclass from the DTCM.
  • The CLK Touring Car is upgraded with Turbo 4 to collect all points in the D-2 subclass from the DTCM.

Credit Balance is 335,102 at the end of the collection.
Sell 2 Mercedes Race Cars to reach 1,822,600 credits.
Optionally sell the last Mercedes Race Car and the Clio Trophy Race Car to reach 2,661,973 credits.

Description of B-spec Points

The Maximum B-spec Level is B-spec: 10000/100/100/100
(there is no prize)
B-spec Skill: 10000
Machine Skill: 100
Course Skill: 100
Battle Skill: 100

This Training Guide is designed to reach the first Hard Milestone score of B-spec: 7375/100/73/73. This description of the B-spec points and methods of collection is intended to explain why this is such an important goal.

The B-spec points can be classified and described using a number of techniques, but these methods are fairly complex due to an important basic principle of B-spec; the B-spec points represent the collection of a smaller B-spec unit. The exact size of the B-spec unit is still unknown, so point milestones and observations of how the fractions resolve are used to confirm B-spec point collections. Most of the concern and attention to detail revolves around attempt to avoid dropping tiny fraction of a point without any clue as to where it is hidden.

There are two major classifications of B-spec Points. There are 7000 B-spec points, often referred to as “Floating” Points that are the main focus of this training guide. The other 3000 points are termed “Track” Points - not be confused with the “Course” Points, a particular type Track Point. The Track Points are divided evenly between the 4 major power classes on 58 different tracks. It is impractical to collect only the 7000 Floating Points without collecting some Track Points, so the first verification that the current collection has not dropped any fractions occurs after 29 tracks (58/2). B-spec:7375/100/73/73.

Floating Points can be collected from any track. Points collected on one track can take away from the point available to the race on the next track. Eventually the points run out on all tracks. Some tracks are more generous with different types of Floating Points, but I have been unable to classify the difference. Nurburgring can eventually provide all possible Floating Points, but sometimes the points trickle in fairly slowly. A different track might provide all remaining Floating Points in a single race. Most tracks will only provide some, but not all of the Floating Points available to that subclass. This guide tries to take advantage the generosity of different tracks for different points in order to finish the collection fairly quickly.

Two types of Floating Points have been defined: There are 4666 and 5/29th “Machine” Points, and 2333 and 24/29th “Floating Battle” Points - not to be confused with “Track Battle” Points, a type of Track Point. It’s possible to collect only the Machine Points by driving in Practice or Photo Mode on tracks without Track Points. Even Rally tracks can provide some Machine Points. I don’t recommend it. The numbers here don’t provide much practical information other than to hint at the general distribution of Floating Points. Just two or three good races are likely to collect all possible Floating Battle Points, so many of the later races are used to slowly collect as few more Machine points. The B-spec Training Guide uses racing strategies designed to target or balance specific types of points during certain races.

Machine Points contribute 100% of the Machine Skill. This skill is divided evenly between 8 power subclasses of vehicle. It is possible to confirm a partial collection of Machine Points after every 2 subclasses when the fractions resolve to provide exactly 25, 50, 75, or 100 percent Machine Skill. The Machine Points will also contribute a total Course Skill of 70.

Floating Battle Points provide a total Battle Skill of 70. There is no early verification method for the Floating Battle Points, so the racing strategies usually try to collect all of these points as soon as possible with later races focusing on Machine Points, but an effort is made to assure these races will also clean up any stray Floating Battle Points.

Two types of Track Points have been defined: 2000 Course Points, and 1000 Track Battle Points. Again, it’s possible to collect the only Course Points by practicing without racing, but it’s not a practical method. The 2000 Course Points will contribute another 20 percent Course Skill. The 1000 Track Battle Points contribute the final 10 percent of Course Skill, and 30 percent of Battle Skill.

The primary distinction between Floating Points and Track Points are the power classes and subclasses. There are 4 Major Classes (A, B, C, and D) used to collect Track Points. Each Major Class has Floating Points divided in to two subclasses (A-1, A-2, B-1, etc.). The structure of this training guide is built around the 8 subclasses of Floating Points, but the total track count, and tracks selected, is based on the 4 major power classes.

58 B-spec Tracks * 4 Major Classes = 232 Tracks.
3000 Floating Points/232 Tracks = 12 and 27/29th, or ~ 12.931 per Track
But the fractions don’t resolve as expected. The observed track point progression is:
+12, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13,
+12, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13, +13,
+12, +13, +14

Description of B-spec Skills

Contrary to everything I thought I knew, there appears to be very little interaction between the B-spec Skills of different classes and subclasses. A B-spec driver with only the B-1 Floating Points and Track Points from only 3 tracks will record race times identical to a 10000 point B-spec driver using an identical car on those 3 tracks. The race times recorded in this guide usually remain consistent even when I change the order of the subclass collection. The sequence of the track point collection usually doesn’t change the race times. I keep using the term “usually” because sometimes I get unexpected results, and I’m not sure if the fractions have resolved differently, or if the settings don’t exactly match. Either way, the difference is that maybe I’ll get a slightly different race time on the last race of a subclass series.

This independence of subclasses and track points implies that parts of this guide might be used directly by players that have some B-spec points, but have never raced with B-spec in that particular subclass. The independence of skills and points has also been a key factor in creating the training guide. Large sections of the test scripts have been refined, retested, and reused. Basically, once a subclass has been confirmed with a score of 7375 the sections can be reused with a great deal of confidence; as long as the race times remain consistent, then the same points have been collected.

Point Collection Strategies

Several strategies were tested to determine the most efficient manner to collect B-spec points. Different point types required different strategies, and these strategies change depending on how many points have been collected.

Tuning the Car
  • Vehicles tuned to the maximum potential for that subclass earn more points – battle and machine
  • For the lower subclasses, a vehicle must be near maximum potential to collect all points
  • Less downforce usually leads to more points - machine
  • Harder tires usually earn more points - machine
Early Races
  • Winning a close race almost always earns more points than losing – battle and machine
  • Winning a race cleanly late in the last lap usually earns more points than a last second win with a very tight MOV – battle or machine
  • A slower pace usually earns more points – machine
Maximizing Certain Points
  • Races without other vehicles changing the racing line earn more points – machine
  • Making passes during certain sections of track appear to provide point bonuses – battle or machine
  • A different Pace will occasionally earn different points.

B-spec Training Guide Procedures

I'll fill in the details of this post when get get the documentation posted. In the meantime, these are the critical instructions for getting started on racing.

Save and Reset Procedure

If the races are to be repeated exactly, then the opponents for the race must use the same cars, and be in the same order as described for certain races. Limited testing indicates that the Save and Reset Procedure will remove the randomness of the lineups presented in certain races.
  • Tune the car so it is ready for the next race.
  • Save the game.
  • Turn off the Game System (PS2).
  • Restart the game and go directly to the next race.
  • The Restart Lineup should always be the same - hopefully as described.
There are a great number of procedures that can be preformed without changing the restart lineup. You can buy cars or parts, or change settings or oil, and the Restart Lineup will remain the same. You are welcome to experiment was much as you like, but for the sake of simplicity the procedure is described as: Get the car ready first, save and reset, and go directly to the race.

Instructions for Races

Do not change anything after the race begins.
All variables must be set before the race begins.
Change or verify the parts and settings for that race.
Start the race in B-spec Mode.
Turn on Overtake. Overtake should always be on.
Set the Pace setting for the race.
Do not turn on Pit. Pitting is not a factor in the current guide.
3 Times normal speed is optional - usually recommended.
Saving and checking points between races is optional unless specified.

Notes on Tuning

Any part or setting that is not described is left at default levels.
Substituting different upgrades to reach the same power level is likely to lead to different results.

Non-Critical Factors - subject to revision

Clear or Don't Clear on repeated races
Car color, Wheel choice, Wing type
Clean car, Dirty car, Washed car
Exit to Save or Next Race - except for the Save and Reset Procedures
Number of Days - except for the availability of a used Cappuccino
Total Credits - not so sure about this one
A-spec Points and Game Completion - probably
Changing oil or washing the car at the end of a series

Go to European Events, Europe Classic Car League
Enter Fuji Speedway 80’s

Race Notes: Usually the strategy is to collect all the points as quickly as possible, but for this series of 20 races the plan is to repeat each race with the same setting until the points stop trickling in, then figure out how to collect the remaining points before earning the 200,000 credits required for the B-1 and B-2 training plan. The first 16 races will be run with a pace of Cruise; two races will have a repeated race time – the machine points have run out. The next 3 races will use a pace of slow in order to collect the remaining battle points. The final race will be held at the K Cup - Tsukuba Circuit with S2 Tires and will provide the last few A-2 machine points right on schedule. The credit balance can be used to track the number of races with a pace of Cruise. Look for the repeated race time of 3'41.179, and then switch to the Slow pace.

Parts Change/Settings

I am moving away from using the Set Tabs for vehicle parts, but for this series of races it is still easier to explain the Tab configuration than to constantly switch the many parts used to arrange 5 very close races. This subclass was my first effort to script a point collection and I spent quite a bit of time trying to make the races as interesting as possible.

The Full Limited-slip (Full Slip) settings is the consistent difference between the tabs. Set A doesn’t use Full Slip. Set B has the Acceleration increased by 2 to 42. Set C uses the default setting: Full Slip 10 40 20 (torque, acceleration, and deceleration).

The initial configuration for settings tab Set A, Set B, and Set C are:
Set A: NA2, R1 Tires, Twin Clutch, Carbon Shaft
Set B: NA2, R1 Tires, Sports Clutch, Full Slip 10 42 20
Set C: NA2, R1 Tires, Sports Clutch, Sports Fly, Full Slip 10 40 20

B-1 Collection

Goal: Collect all the points and arrange for 5 very close races. This series of races was designed to get the attention of testers. A perfect plan would meet both goals for every subsection. The only drawback to this section is that the prize car can't be sold for a profit. I keep considering swapping out the Crossfire for a Civic Race, but I enjoy watching these races.

Having never used B-Spec, and having no intention to either, this won't come in handy for me, but, (and that's a pretty big but!) the amount of information you've compiled here will surely help a great many other GT Planet members and browsers alike, and for that you deserve a tonne of credit.
+Rep from me, if the system still existed!

Hard Milestone: 7750/100/77/77

I've been experimenting with the restart lineups of Championship races as a method of collecting track points. It's a bit of a struggle as I can usually only get a few new tracks during each series. This particular set of Championship series was selected because they tend to be highly profitable.

Jaguar XJ220 LM Race Car '01, 318,749 Cr.
5 races * 12,000 + 45,000
+3 New Tracks = 3 Tracks

The CLK Race Car would probably do nicely for this race, but I prefer to run normal cars against normal cars. Besides, I’ve got a good McLaren hunter sitting in the garage. The series is restricted to normal or sports tires so there isn’t much danger of getting into the D class points without a wing and weight reduction.

Currently owned SL 65 AMG
Turbine: Stage 4, 85000 Cr.
Flywheel: Racing, 1100 Cr.
Carbon Driveshaft, 3250 Cr.

Verify Weight Balance of 15 at -44.
Change to S2 Tires
Core setup is: Turbo 4, S2 Tires, Racing Chip, Racing Intercooler, Racing Fly
Modifiers are: Carbon Shaft (off 4 and 5) and Weight Balance (reduced race 5).
