BAR Honda vs. Toyota

toyota has the largest buget in f1, 70 million just on engines alone. But they are still a new team in this sport. Then there is BAR Honda that has a pretty desent season this year. (props for button) toyota has been quoted to said nothing other than a podium finish will do in bahrain(spelling?) When can toyota be a podium competitor? This competion is good as honda has extended their contract with BAR and has put out a vastly improved engine this year. Toyota is definitely feeling the pressure to suceed?
just some of my thoughts...

Just a couple of corrections for you RB26DETT:

Toyota ($368.51m) has the second-largest total budget, lagging almost $50m behind Ferrari ($418.23m). Toyota's engine budget is highest, however, at $175m (you were only $105m out!! ;)) These figures are from F1 Racing magazine, and are in US dollars. They're also tacitly acknowledged to be definitive (i.e. right).

Toyota seem to be all at sea on the chassis front at the moment. I think the team is adjusting to Mike Gascoyne coming into the team, and to Ove Andersson leaving, but they really should be above all that now.

I think that they're just confused. They expected the current car to be better than it is, and they don't know how to handle the car's deficiencies.

Toyota (well, last year anyway) seemed to be on the right page in qualifying, but then throw things sway in the race due to weird pit strategies.

Hopefully they can get things right soon, as another contender for the podium would make for more good racing.

Could you post a few more of the budgets? I'd find it very interesting.

I think, the media and the people gave Toyota too much credits for being a noobie.. Hell look at the Renault, they are a freaking newbie too and they r kicking asses

How long have you been following F1? Renault is a re-branding of the team formerly known as Benetton. Who won two World Championships.

Not exactly noobs...

#1 thing is the drivers for Toyota are not as good as those in BMW and Ferrari

Well....I don't rate Da Matta or Panis as "bad" drivers but they aren't superstars either. Da Matta has shown signs of talent for F1 but on average has been rather sad. Panis has been around forever (in F1 terms) and a certian skill is learned from all those years on the grid, however I think these talents would be better used as a test driver than a race driver.

Honda on the other hand has Button who I would rate in the top 5 of drivers on the grid and Sato who when he can stay on the track with the car pointing the right way is bloody fast.

For Toyota to advance I think they need two new drivers, as much as I like Da Matta, sadly he needs to advance a bit, maybe a year off as a test driver (like Massa or Sato) would give him more feel for a F1 car which is NOT like a CHUMP (sic) car. Panis would be well used as their main test driver I think.

Which drivers? Ralphie would be good, maybe a new team/car will help him pull his finger out of his ass and shut up and drive. The second? Zonta is outpacing his teammates at almost every outing, maybe he deserves a shot?

Mike G. I am sure will turn the manufacture of the car around by mid next season so on that front I am not worried and they already have one of the more powerful engines on the grid which seems mostly reliable.

Toyota has the $$$ and has dominated just about every form of racing they have ever entered (look at the craftsman NASCAR truck series to see a recent one).

My guess?

Toyota will be fighting for a constructors title by 2008 and maybe a driver's title before then but definately by 2010.

Honda on the other hand is sorta unknown right now. Sure they made a HUGE step up over the winter but they are still not on par with Ferrari (who is though this season) but are, in my mind, equal with Renault...and slightly behind (VERY slightly) Williams and McLaren when they figure their car(s) out. The next step up to be on the same level with the top 3 teams is HUGE though it is much smaller than the giant step they made over the winter. I don't know if they will get there (I hope they do) but this season will tell. My only issue is sure they are doing great right now, two races in a row with podiums, lots of momentum...BUT...wait until they have a bad race weekend (it happens to everyone) and let's see if they can pull themselves back up and fight for top spots the next weekend. That will be huge. if they can do that then I say the limits are infinite and there will be thee "top 4 teams" Ferrari, Williams, Honda, McLaren (in that order).

I think by the time they can do that (not that I think it will take too long) I thin Renault would be in their too. i.e. Ferrari, Williams, Honda, Renault, McLaren (in that order).

Sorry to tell you but most of the mods have sigs that are too long.

I am not a mod....

My sig is too long, probably...I put the driver/team support list for someone who asked me a few days ago...

I agree about Renault. If anything beginning mid last season the "big 3" were Ferrari/Williams/Renault....this year it is pretty obvious. McLaren has been slipping since this time last year, some say even before. Sure their driver finished #2 last season, almost won, but it is Kimi....driving a 3 year old car because McLaren failed to make the 03 car work, just like they are failing with the 04.

Maybe McLaren needs to focus on F1 again and not on cheesy looking over hyped super cars.

who cares about sigs...........

toyota will get there one day....they have the money and resources

remember how BAR said they would be winning championshipss within a few years...and those years have passed. now they are making progress and are gaining speed at every race this year

the same will happen with toyota...it takes a while for a team to find their feet in formula 1. they will get there...but it depends on their commitment and it also takes time.

Toyota was good last year, but they have gone to wrong direction. Panis is an experienced driver, and will catch some points this year.

Bar has made a great improvement. Now when Villeneuve is out and tirebrand has changed everything is brighter for them. And thats good. It is challenging Renault this year in the constructors championship i think.

Toyota should get a grip of themselves. If I remember right, they said before the seasons start that they will finish third in constructors championship. That was a very aggressive goal for them. In my opinion, Toyota will be fighting with BAR and Renault in two or three years.

Yes but they think it will happen sooner than it will. They have blitzed almost every other form of Motoersport. They just have to keep trying and they will probably do the same with F1, it just takes more time thasn they expected.

I believe toyota will be a good team but only in about 3yrs time, about BAR they are having a great season they are the only team together with Renault who can fight with Ferrari. Right now Bar is better than Toyota

I think Toyota need to invest a bit more intelligently, they seem to be throwing out as much money as anyone but they're left fighting with the backmarkers. Be interesting to see if Ralf can turn anything around.

They obviously have the funds to get where they want to go but F1 is a whole different bag of chips compared to LeMans etc. Simply put I don't think they have a chance for at least 3 seasons.
